If not for Dr. Kaplan, I wouldn't be alive. I was having extreme pain, unable to sleep, and it was getting worse every day. They set an appointment, but worked to get me in much sooner (less than a week) than the scheduled appointment when no other Rheumatologist office would work me in sooner than a month and a half. Once I got to his office, he interviewed me for an hour. Before he did the physical exam, he told me exactly what disease I had, what the treatment was, got me admitted to the hospital that day through the emergency room, arranged all of the treatment I needed, saw me twice in the hospital to be sure all of the needed tests were performed in the shortest possible time.

If I had waited for one of the other appointments, I would likely have died, as he said that based on my symptoms and how far the disease had progressed, I might have died within 2 weeks to a month.

If you are ill and haven't been properly diagnosed, you simply must make an appointment with Dr. Kaplan. I can almost guarantee that he will figure out what illness you have.

Dr. Kaplan is a world-class physician. He looks beyond the symptoms and finds the cause. He spends the time to listen, analyze, and explain, leaving no stone unturned. He actively pursues treatment solutions and will work persistently with insurance companies to get approvals for necessary treatments. I would highly recommend him.

I have been a patient of Dr. Kaplan since 1993. He is widely regarded as the best rheumatologist in the northern part of San Diego County, if not the entire county. His office staff includes a nurse practitioner, and several nurses. He has his own infusion clinic, so that when your treatment includes periodic intravenous infusions of modern biological agents (the drugs of choice for the auto-immune forms of arthritis and related conditions [lupus, psoriasis, etc.]) you see his staff, not the staff at a hospital or remote facility. This can be very important, because upon occasion you may not feel especially good on the day you are scheduled for your treatment, and if there are questions about whether to go ahead with the therapy you are on-site to have the PA or Dr. Kaplan step in to ask you questions to determine if you are well enough to receive the medicine on that day. He has his own small MRI machine for doing MRI studies of hands and feet, and his own bone density test machine [DEXA scan]. His practice is, in essence, state of the art. He is also the smartest diagnostician I have ever met. Not only is he smart and technically capable, but he is one of the nicest, most caring, engaged physicians I have ever seen. I know lots and lots of doctors, and consider Dr. Kaplan to be the very best one I know.
I started seeing him after he treated my wife for a few years for fibromyalgia.

Just moved to Madison WI from San Diego... Roy Kaplan is probably the finest doctor I have ever come across. After being misdiagnosed for 20 years, he found the problem and cured it. He is caring, kind, and extremely thorough. Be prepared for a very long wait in the office! Bring a book... It's completely worth it. He spends a long time with his patients and doesn't let them go until he is satisfied with their care.

He is extremely intelligent and has amazing diagnostic skills. He is the consummate professional at what he does. If all doctors were like him, there wouldn't be a medical crisis in our country.

Pros: Amazing diagnostition, brilliant, encyclopediac knowledge of his craft.

Cons: long waiting times, totally worth the wait.

I am seventy years old and have been treated for back and joint pains since the age of eleven.
After years of discomfort, Dr. Kaplan was recommended by a neurologist who told me,
" Dr Roy Kaplan is absolutely the best in his field." And he was right.
Dr. Kaplan never stopped looking for the cause of my discomfort. Doctors in the past, including two other Rheumatologists, made a diagnosis and then stop looking. He did not do this.

After multiple tests and exams, he made a new diagnosis which I now know was right, because the treatment has improved my life 100 %.
I recommend him without reservation to my family and friends. My husband is also now his patient.

Dr. Kaplan is also warm and friendly. He takes the time to really listen to how we have been doing,
so as to possibly tweek the treatment for even more improvement if possible.

Michelle Turk, his Nurse Practioner, is a wonderful addition to his office. She is an intelligent, kind, gentle practioner that is always there for the patients.

The office staff is a group of caring, friendly people. They always carry messages and requests with accuracy and follow through. The whole atmosphere in this office is a pleasure to experience.

He has been wonderful. You may have to wait to see hime but it is worth the wait. I had surgery on both of my ankles for torn tendons. I was always told that it was because I had flat feet. He showed me that my ankles were diseased because of the arthritis. He showed me how everything I was feeling tied together and I had to look at things differently. He is the best. Have your questions ready at the consultation. He spends time with you and the office staff is great.

If you have RA, fibromyalgia, hard-to-diagnosis muscle or joint pain, or are fighting for benefits, Kaplan is the only doctor to see. Even if you're in an HMO, if you aren't getting the care you need, try to find the funds to see him on your own. He is TOO good in the way that makes for a long wait to get in and his visits short. Be prepared; ask questions and he'll find the time to answer them. I 'found' him when he was hired by my insurance to get me OFF disability; he proved my case beyond any doubt instead. I've been to just about everyone in the county, and none compare.
