A physical fight with an 85-year-old woman over her dentures resulted in a Deltona dentist??s arrest Tuesday afternoon. Michael Hammonds faces four felony charges after his patient said the two of them fought about an adjustment Hammonds made to her dentures. The altercation turned physical and the woman was injured when she tried to get the dentures back from Hammonds. She wound up biting him to make him let go and stop hurting her. Then she said that she tried to leave, but he blocked her attempts to get out the door, removing her hands from the door handle and causing some bruising. The woman was treated by paramedics for her injuries on scene The woman went to Elkcam Dental, 1200 Deltona Blvd. #9, shortly after noon to have her lower partial dentures adjusted. When Hammonds did the work and placed the dentures back in her mouth, she said it felt like they cut her gum and she screamed. She yanked them out and flung them at Hammonds, demanding a refund. Hammonds told her to leave and so she tried to take the dentures back from him since she owned them. He refused to let go, resulting in a physical struggle with Hammonds screaming in the patient??s face, according to the woman. She said that the dentures started cutting into her finger, causing a lot of pain and making it bleed. With Hammonds still refusing to let go as they made their way down the hallway, the woman bit his hand, and he finally released the dentures.
The woman then tried to get out through the main office door when Hammonds shut it and stood in the way, refusing to let her leave. Whenever she reached for the door handle, he grabbed her arms. In a final attempt to get out, the woman climbed on a receptionist??s desk to get out through a nearby window, but was unsuccessful. During the altercation, an employee called 911.
The 57-year-old dentist was charged with false imprisonment, grand theft, battery on a person over 65 years old and assault on a person over 65 years old. He was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach without incident.
