I am an individual who is experienced in healthcare, and live in the Boston area. I brought my mother in on 3/14/12 for consult. Dr. Watkins was an hour late, despite the waiting room being empty 1/2 hr prior to our appt. He did not provide clear explanations as to the risks, details, anesthesia, etc that the proposed procedure would involve. His eyes were read and bloodshot, and he was going from topic to topic without completing his thoughts. He hurried though appointment. My mother has some complicated issues. When she began asking questions, he stood up suddenly and said "Look - I've answered every question that even God himself could think to ask - and I'm NOT going to answer any more!" He turned and walked quickly out of the room, slamming the door behind him. The NP, Patty, who was in the room, looked appalled. We terminated the relationship with him, and are in the process of filing complaints with MGH, the Board of Medicine, the Department of Public Health, and Harvard Medical School. His behavior was both frightening and appalling. Regardless of his alleged surgical skill, if he cannot control him emotions during a simple office visit, he should not be trusted in the OR. My mother and I are committed to having this incident investigated thoroughly, and to having appropriate action taken promptly. The staff at the center were very nice, and other physicians there, such as Dr Schanfeld, were terrific. She has never experienced an encounter of mistreatment and rights violation as she has with Dr. Watkins.
