Upon walking into the office I noticed immediately that it smelled badly and the chairs in the waiting room were very dirty and stained. I had to try to pick the cleanest chair to sit in. The office was extremely old, outdated, and rather dilapidated. I already had decided to change my primary care physician by this point based on the conditions, but decided I would stay just to get my referral which was all I needed anyway. The medical assistant that took my vitals etc. appeared to be untrained and illiterate. She had extreme difficulty with asking me questions and writing my responses. SHE asked ME how to spell employee, social worker, and the name of my previous doctor. I had to help her pronounce the list of conditions on the questionnaire. She took my pulse three times and looked up in the air for several minutes as if she was doing the math. After the fact another nurse reprimanded her in front of me for not getting the pulse correct and not knowing if birth control was a medication. Another nurse in the room apologized to me for having to deal with this. I do not believe that she was properly certified or educated to treat patients.
Then the medical assistant gave me a paper thermometer and said it was because they didn't have one to wash off and didn't have the thermometer covers!!!- needless to say I was alarmed and debating if I should leave now or at least just get my referral. I decided to stay but I was waiting so long I decided to call my insurance to see if they could give me another doctor to go to immediately. While waiting I looked around and the exam room was so old that the signs and pictures of anatomy were yellow/brown and had the date as 1986!!!! Nothing had been updated ever in that office, not to mention that it was filthy.
Anyway, while I was on the phone with the insurance the doctor (Nwachukwu .A. Anakwenze) came into the exam room and demanded I get off of the phone which I did. I told him I was simply there for a referral to the OBGYN because my insurance informed me that I had to see my primary care physician for the referral. He said "Why do you need a referral? We do that here." I said I would prefer an OBGYN and he repeated that they do women's health treatment at his office. I then said I would prefer a female physician. Again, he asked Why? I said because I??m a woman and I am more comfortable with a woman doing a pelvic exam. He was obviously irritated by this point and began going on about why I would want to go elsewhere when I can see him. I said I was just going to leave because it was obviously escalated and I was not getting what I came for. He then tried to say that he could send me to his wife??s office on Manchester. I told him that I was not comfortable going to her office because my experience at his office had not been pleasant so I would rather not go to hers. He was fuming by this point and asked me what was so unpleasant. As nicely as I could I told him that cleanliness and lack of professionalism at his office was an issue for me. He yelled at me saying that he saw 25,000 patients every year and that he??ll do the referral but that I can leave his office now. He stormed out of the room into his office in the next room and called someone and was talking about me angrily as if I was not standing in the doorway waiting to tell him to forget the referral. He got off the phone and I told him I did not even want a referral from him. He then blew up and said ??You are Dumb, Ignorant, and Ugly!? several times. Yes, the physician, who is supposed to be a professional, called his patient ??dumb, ignorant, and ugly.? By now I was livid and fought back saying to him that this is exactly what I meant when I said his office lacked professionalism and that it was dirty and he needed to be reported to health officials.
I left and ran into two medical personnel who I??d seen earlier & told them what happened & how I felt about the conditions of the office. They were shocked about what the doctor said and apologized. One stated that the bad smell was from a flood the office had earlier in the week. She suggested that his wife was a nice and I should go to her. Of course I do not plan to do so.
Just then Dr. Anakwenze came out into the hallway while I was talking to them and began yelling that I said they were dirty and unprofessional, he kept repeating it to them while I was saying to him ??did you not just call me dumb, ignorant, and ugly??. He ignored me of course and left into the waiting room with other patients looking on in curiosity. He then yelled if I did not leave he would call the police.I yelled back that he can call them because he is the one harassing his patients.Needless to say I immediately called and complained to my insurance
