I am not a patient, so I do not know the patient to doctor interaction. However, I had a urinary tract infection and her office was nearby. After CALLING and confirming that I could visit as a FIRST TIME PATIENT since it was a UTI I had that needed to be fixed asap-- I arrived to be told that the next avail was end of March. When I asked is there a URGENT CARE CENTER that is avail (now almost in tears) she said I DONT KNOW, NO. Just horrible, lack of compassion, no sympathy, stone cold. Really not someone I would trust.

Cons: service, lack of empathy

I have been seeing Dr. Ottenheimer for over 2 years and I have come to respect her not only as a doctor, but as a good woman and intelligent person. She is one of those doctors that truly cares about her patients and always makes me feel comfortable and is genuinely concerned about my health. I have recommended her to multiple friends who all like her as well. After searching many years for the right one, I finally found a doctor I can trust to stick with for the long haul.

Do yourself a favor and do NOT see this doctor. I had a first time visit. They totally messed up my lab tests. They told me that the lab messed up. Then I had to wait 2 months just to reschedule the appointment, only to have them call me and cancel! The staff at reception is horrible. They do not care and screw up any message that you leave the doctor. The doctor herself is just OK, I felt I was rushed out of there because there were several more patients waiting. When you see a doctor for an annual exam, you don't want to feel like you are in a supermarket being rushed out of there. There are plenty more doctors in NYC that are better. Don't go.

This place reminds me more of the health clinic at college than the private practice doctors I usually see.

I've waited 45 mins because her staff forgot to tell her that I'd arrived. This last time, because her staff screwed something up (they only have a part-time benefits administrator) they didn't yet have their payment, & thus wouldn't see me. They didn't tell me this until I was AT THE OFFICE waiting 20 mins (they acted like I shouldve known, like it was my fault, like I shouldn't be inconvenienced by this, and gave no apology). They're also not discrete.

Had I received a "We should've called you about the problem before hand, its our fault, we understand what an inconvenience it has been to travel across town, then wait here, only to be asked for money even though your insurance operator is on the phone right now telling you that everything is paid and can give you the check number to confirm it, and we are sorry for this. We are honestly sorry. Also, we didn't mean to embarrass you by shouting the reason for your visit across the full but tiny waiting room." I probably wouldn't be upset, even though its the third out of 3 times the staff screwed something up. Ottenheimer is a good doc, but she's not worth going through this for. This is what you go through when you're trying to see the world's leading expert on whatever extremely complicated and unfortunate condition you might have, not the doc you've got to work with regularly throughout your pregnancy.

I say she's responsible for the bad staff. She's in private practice because for a rea$on, and she should manage it seriously. She's probably competent enough and actually pretty sweet. I think she really wants to make the world better. For these reasons, I conclude that she's just lazy.

Because other doctor-rating posts also give her bad reviews, I don't trust the above post because its just too glowing.

I almost want to keep her a secret. Dr. Ottenheimer is compassionate and brilliant. She's the best doctor I've ever had (in any field). She's considerate, thoughtful, efficient, and charming. I can't say I love going to the gyn, but she makes you feel very comfortable. She listens and is extremely smart. The wait in her office was not long, she even called the front desk to have them ask me if it was alright if she took a little more time with the patient ahead of me (she was only 15 minutes late anyway and it was the end of the day). For the first part of your visit she sits with you in a cozy office where she asks about your medical history and you can tell her any of your concerns (anything at all, I promise). She is never judgemental. You then go into a small adjoining room for the examination which is quick and painless. Her manner is friendly and helpful. Five stars are not enough to capture my relief at finally finding a gynecologist like her. I've had some awful experiences in this city. For anyone looking for a compassionate, smart, respectful gyn who advocates for her patients, Deborah Ottenheimer is the light at the end of the tunnel.

Pros: Everything! Amazing Doctor. Friendly Staff. Rocking Chairs. Relatively Short Wait.

Cons: None.

On my first (which will be my only) visit, this doctor kept me waiting for an hour after my appointment time with no explanation and a cursory apology after I'd already been sitting there like a sucker during my work day for 55 min. Then she told me she'd call me in a week with certain results. She never called that day, and I had to call back twice before learning they were mailing me the results. It's like, what, the knocked-up ladies are more important? Guess so. Also, she is known to give "the shocker," if you know what that means.
