My wife was the actual patient, but I was along with her for the full ride. It started out that she had Spondylolisthesis that had advanced to a grade 4 which means her L5 had slipped forward out of alignment from S1 by 50%. Her spine had began to tilt off of S1 and there was only very little disc left between L5 and S1.
We started out by getting an opinion from a local doctor who definitely recommended doing the surgery, but he was going to leave the spine out of alignment and do a two level fusion (L4, L5, and S1). Needless to say I wasn't real happy about this for my wife and I encouraged he to get a second opinion by a surgeon in a larger city that sees more cases like hers. We decided to go to Barnes in St Louis. While we were waiting for the date of the appointment we begin to pray for God to show us the right surgeon to use. Almost instantly after praying I started looking on-line for some top rated surgeons and decided to look in the Chicago land area. I came across some reviews on Dr. Ronjon Paul and was impressed with what I was reading. I had a sense of confirmation about me and told my wife I was feeling that we really need to go see him. It was going to be about a 3-3.5 hour drive for us.
A day or two later we went to Chicago to Edwards Hospital to see Dr. Ronjon Paul. We didn't know what to expect him to say after he looked at the x-rays all we knew is that he has been working and training hard for the minimal invasive surgeries. Well the meeting started with Dr Paul telling us that surgery was definitely needed and that her case was so bad that he only does about 5 or less surgeries that severe in a year and that he actually does over 400 spine surgeries a year. He had already started studying the x-ray prior to our appointment and told us that he would really like to try to still do it with the minimal invasive technique. He said he had been using that technique for most surgeries for the last 5 - 7 years I believe. When we asked him if he would leave the misalignment or fix it he spoke out without any hesitation and told us that he would definitely pull it back. He said that he may not be able to get it perfect, but that it would be really close. We were blown away, but should have been scared at the same time. However we were not, because of two reasons. Dr. Paul showed so much care and confidence in his demeanor that it was incredible how comforted him made us feel about it. The second reason is that we knew God had His hand in it.
I know this has been a very long review, but it is a big decision to make and I hope it helps someone. We canceled the St. Louis appointment and was able to get a schedule surgery date within 2 weeks with Dr. Paul. Everything with the surgery went flawless. Dr Paul was able to lift her spine where the disc was gone, clean the area out, add a cage and 4 screws, pull her spine back to almost perfect alignment, only did a single level fusion (L5 to S1) all through 1 small incision about 1.25 inches long on both sides of her spine. My wife was up and walking the same day. She was in a tremendous amount of pain which was expected with this kind of surgery, but within 3-4 weeks she was back at church and driving. She never did lose any strength or motion in her legs or feet. Never experienced the drop foot that we feared.
We just returned today from her 7th week post-op appointment and things still look great. She told them her pain level was a 1 on a 1-10 scale.
God is awesome and Dr Paul is the number #1 choice for spine surgery in my opinion.

52 years old with back issues for over 25 years - now 6 months post-op from 2 level MIS TLIF and I am without pain or weakness in back and legs. Thank you Dr. Paul! I felt well informed going into the procedure, well supported by Dr. Pauls' staff after the surgery and received personalized attention by Dr. Paul and the PAs at each of my post surgical visits. The surgery appears to have been a complete success and based upon my condition (lack of pain, increased/normal flexability/range of motion, returning strength to back and legs) and input from the PT folks at ATI - my rate of recovery "a good 10 to 12 weeks ahead of people that have had similar procedures" under different surgical approaches by other surgeons - I offer my highest recommendation for Dr. Paul and endorse his "less invasive" approach from personal experience!!

Dr. Paul performed a TLIF, less invasive procedure on me. My recovery far surpassed that of friends who had the traditional fusion. He is an excellent surgeon and the most caring that I have met. I had 3 other opinions, all agreeing on what had to be done. Dr. Paul was the only one who used the TLIF. Also, his staff was superior and very attentive. He and his staff answered any question I had, no matter how trivial, with kindness and detail. I would definitely recommend him.
