Dr. Patel was first on scene at RGH when I had my heart attack at 1:30 in the morning, & so he was assigned as my cardiologist when I was discharged from the hospital.

Because I was unconscious during the entire event, I never actually met Dr. Patel until my first follow-up visit 3 weeks after the heart attack. He was very quiet & didn't say much on that visit unless I asked a question. And even then he seemed disturbed or distracted by something, though he remained attentive, listened intently to me & answered any questions I had. Because of that distraction, I wasn't sure at first if I wanted to stay with him, but in the end I felt I wanted to give him, as well as myself, a chance to develop a good doctor-patient relationship, now that the emergency had passed. He saved my life & I felt I owed us both the chance to get to know each other during the healing process. So I stuck with him & I am so glad that I did.

It appears that his reserved nature was due to uncertainty as to how I would proceed after the heart attack. I think too many patients quickly return to their old lifestyle that may have contributed to their heart disease, which I??m sure is very frustrating for a doctor.

As our follow-up appointments unfolded, however, he found that I had made & adhered to a drastic lifestyle change, which seemed to soften his reserved attitude. He continued to listen to my questions, comments & concerns without rushing me, & took the time needed to answer all. He never rushes you; rather, you feel like you are his only patient when he is with you. He is very upfront about everything, while remaining respectful & considerate. Most of all, I can see that he truly cares about the health & welfare of his patients, which is not as common amongst doctors as one would hope. I was very grateful for this.

We have developed a wonderful working relationship & he gets 'yes' for the 3 questions I ask myself about each doctor I have:

Do I feel comfortable with him/her? Do I trust him/her? Do I want him to be there if I ever have another heart event? A resounding, unwavering YES to all! He is a brilliant, caring cardiologist, & I am thankful for him each & every day.
