.

We waited 9 months for our intial appointment.
My daughter recieved very thorough developmental testing and was diagnosed with ADHD. We were offered typical ADHD medication for treatment, however, we chose not to use medication. I explained our reasons for not choosing medication to Dr. Harkins. I was willing to try meds but my husband was not. This caused much strain on our family. I explained these frustrations with Dr. Harkins. She offered no alternatives or support. The only choices she presented were medication or no medication. When my husband attended appts with Dr. Harkins, she was confrontational with him in trying to convince him medications where the only treatment. This caused even more stress on our family.
At the recommendation of my daughter's occupational therapist, and after much research & consulting with my daughter's PCP, we tried caffeine as a treatment alternative with some but not huge success. When I told Dr. Harkins of our use of caffein, she was adamantly opposed and as a result discharged my daughter from her care.
Dr. Harkins had one of her office staff call me to discuss the discharge & then notified me of the discharge by letter. Dr. Harkins never discussed this with me directly.
Though I believe Dr. Harkins to be a very knowledgeable physician and the testing provided in her practice is thorough, I found her to be arrogant, unfriendly and unapproachable. For those who choose not to use medications, she offers NO support, no alternatives, no additional information, nothing, even when asked. She is difficult to communicate with and vertualy unavailable by phone or other methods to her patients or families.
