This practice was recommended to me by a friend when my youngest (4yr. at the time) had her first cavity and I was looking for a kid-focused place to treat her. She was very good w/Dr. Matthews and didn't seem to mind going for subsequent fillings. The problem was every time we went for a cleaning she would need another filling. Neither of my two older children have needed any fillings (they have never been to The Kid's Dentist). We don't have insurance and one of the fillings needed a cap (not cheep!). The most troubling part of going for me was that the hygienist would always question my child's diet and teeth cleaning habits. Given her "tendency" towards cavities we were very vigilant. I felt that they did not believe me when I would tell them that we brushed after meals when we could, but at least twice a day. The explanation for why she "is" prone to cavities was very vague - soft teeth, not really brushing well, it just is that way for some kids.

I was ok with this until her last cleaning when they found another cavity in one of her baby teeth and announced that all 4 of her six year molars had come in (within the last few months) and already show signs of decay. The recommended treatment is a new procedure called PRR whereby they scrape off the decay and seal the tooth with a stronger resin than a usual sealant. All this to the tune of $940. It was distressing as I didn't have the money, but wanted to do the right thing for my child. I looked up the procedure on-line and it is legit and makes sense - it's just hard to believe her teeth could be in such bad shape so quickly.
I took her to another dentist that accepts a discount dental plan I have that was recommended by several friends from school and low and behold her teeth are in pretty good shape. The cavity in her baby tooth is extremely small and they recommend just keeping an eye on it as she will likely loose it before it becomes an issue. They recommend traditional sealants for her molars for $36 each. Overall they thought her teeth look healthy and told her to keep up the good work.

I can't guess the reasons behind The Kid's Dentist recommending unnecessary treatment. Certainly providers can disagree, but the consistent diagnosis of bad teeth and remarks by the hygienists about my lack of care as the possible cause was enough to have me finally seek an alternative.

A++++++++ I have been bringing my six children to Dr. Matthews for 10+ years. Dr. Matthews and his staff are always extremely pleasant, caring, considerate, respectful, generous, and always very informative about any necessary treatment. Two of my children have special needs and the staff and the Doctor go out of their way to meet my children's needs. I have been to many, many different Dr.'s offices over the last 18 years and hands down Dr. Matthews is the BEST. I highly recommend The Kid's Dentist!!!!!!!!!!!!!
