I have only seen Dr. John Salerno twice, for simple X-ray and cleaning, so I cannot judge his skills on any other and more complex procedure. The cleaning was to par with any other cleaning I have received previously, the X-ray was done by the staff.
The clinic itself is crowded and has an old look, but I personally don't find that important.
Two episodes disappointed me and made me look elsewhere for my future dental needs:

1) When I called I asked for an appointment SPECIFICALLY for routine cleaning. They told me they also do X-ray as a routine check for new patients, and I was all up for it, thinking that they would be done the same day. I took part of a morning off, and went to the appointment. Only after the X-ray was done I was notified that for the cleaning I needed ANOTHER appointment (the front-desk secretary I contacted did not bother informing me about this). I only placed a mild comment with the dentist then, maybe it was a misunderstanding, but I took mental note of that. Got another appointment (16 days later), another part of the day off, got the cleaning done.

2) During the procedure, the doctor did acknowledge that there was a small problem with a specific area between two molars (this was spotted by my previous dentists as well). He said he would start cleaning there. No special tool was used, just some extra care, and maybe about 5 extra minutes. He did not acknowledge, however, that he considers this 'deeper cleaning' a SEPARATE PROCEDURE. In short, they billed this deeper cleaning to my insurance, which triggered a $100 deductible (everything else would have been fully covered). I would have very much appreciated to be notified of the fact that this was billed separately, to have the option to check with my insurance first.
Please note that the small problem with my two molars was there before, and NONE of my previous dentists has ever billed me anything extra for cleaning that specific, small, spot.

Strange thing is also that the insurance bill (I checked with them) had each procedure spelled out, while my bill reports only two expenses, which seem to be x-ray and cleaning, but the total of the cleaning includes the 'deeper cleaning'. I cannot be more precise, because there is an acronym for the two entries, which is the same, hand-written and impossible to read. Also, it does not seem to correspond to any acronym reported in the footer of the bill.

Finally, and this is minor, their front-desk secretary is unfriendly (or at least she was during the 4 times I had anything to do with her), and unpleasant to deal with. When I called explaining why I was disappointed, the end of the conversation was pretty much: "that is your bill, have a good day" and did not seem to care about losing a customer.

This is the first time I have a problem with a dentist that has overall a good reputation, and generally I tend to be pretty laid back when it comes to these trivial things. However, in this clinic I found little clarity on appointment schedule, procedures, and billing. And I spent a little over $100 that I was not planning to spend at the time.
First dentist I tried nearby Oak Park and I will not be going back.
