I cannot recommend Dr. Shapiro more highly. I was terrified going in - this was my first surgery, and he gave it to me very straight, including being very vocal about the expected time to heal and what I could expect to do /not do within days/weeks post surgery. The nursing staff was incredible, even post-op, answering lots of my questions. Follow-up appointments were also painless - I would come in with a list of questions for Dr. Shapiro, and he welcomed the questions and made sure I understood the answers before I left. He was originally my 2nd opinion doc - after seeing someone else first - and his original recommendation (get me strong with PT prior to surgery) as well as the time he spent to help me understand the procedure was night and day - easy for me to make the decision. I'm 3 months post-surgery and still healing, but better than I was before! Hope my body doesn't require me to to see Dr. Shapiro again, but if anything goes wrong mechanically, I'm going back to him post haste!

Dr Shapiro is my hero! I am a 61 year old professional violinist and had 2 rotator cuff tears that had been surgically repaired 6 years earlier and a torn bicep shoulder tendon. My former surgeon just said that I'd have to live with it, and that the bicep would just fall down and I'd lose some mobility but it wouldn't be a big deal. I really thought that my career was over. My pt recommended that I see Dr. Joel Shapiro. Dr. Shapiro said that, in his opinion the advice I'd been given would be appropriate for an elderly person, not 61 year old and especially not a violinist. He said that my former surgeon was a very good, and that it may be that the tissue in the rt cuff was too thin, but he would do a bicep tenodisis and if he saw that he could fix the r cuff, he would. HE WAS ABLE CLEAN AND FIX THE R CUFF ALL THE WAY TO THE BONE (fixing sharp edges, bone spurs, repairing the tears etc) AND did the bicep surgery. Recovery was great with prescribed pt the whole way (former surgeon had just sent me home w exercises, this time I have expert guidance. The incision is even better this time around. Dr. Joel Shapiro wasn't willing to give up on me. He has given me back my music. I can't thank him enough.

I had an MRI that showed my shoulder was bad. Torn bicep, labrum, rotator cuff, the reason I hadn't seen a specialist was because good shoulder movement and working with a PT. It wasn't getting better so I finally saw Dr. Shapiro who said I needed surgery. I had heard from friends how painful and unsuccessful the results could be. But, the few I know who saw him said he was the best. and I think he is. He explained everything in a very realistic and way. He said it isn't "fun", takes a long time to heal and I would need to be very careful. SLOW AND STEADY was his advise. It was painful but I followed his advise and now 3 months later I am able to start some strength training. I have almost total mobility and sometimes forget it was done. Dr. Shapiro is personable and paid attention to my many questions. I didn't feel like just another patient. There are still PT sessions but because of the surgery I have been able to correct my posture and feel stronger than ever. The office is wonderful. I would highly recommend Dr. Shapiro.

Dr. Shapiro is the MAN; the yardstick, my hero, and I have been recommending him to anybody with shoulder issues ever since he fixed my shoulder five years ago. Facing surgery is not easy- and you need a man who a) knows exactly what he's talking about, b) knows exactly what he's looking at, and c) puts you at ease when relaying the situation. He has all of these qualities in spades. My procedure was very straightforward- and my shoulder is like new. Sweet.

This June I had two dislocations of my left shoulder. I am a 31 yo very active male FF. I was devastated by the injury. I came to the right surgeon.

Dr.Shapiro is top notch. He took the time to thoroughly explain my injury in layman's terms. Then he examined all possible solutions for my injury. Unfortunately I had to undergo surgery. But I wouldn't have had anyone else perform it.

I'm back to full shift work at the fire department just 4 months later and my shoulder feels great. I would recommend anybody with a shoulder injury in the PNW schedule an appointment with Dr. Shapiro. He's got great bedside manner, is extremely knowledgeable and is very much a leader in his field.

Thanks Dr. Shapiro.

Dr. Shapiro was extremely knowledgeable about the timing of, and expectations from, rotator cuff surgery. Dr. Shapiro then performed the surgery flawlessly with very little scarring. The entire time, he and his staff were very professional and warm--he has a great sense of humor and makes you feel very comfortable.

What's more, Dr. Shapiro explicitly explained the risks associated with post-surgery activity. It was helpful to understand this risk analysis as I was planning to compete in a 24-hour, 30-mile Spartan Ultra World Championship in Iceland just a few months post-surgery. I followed his advice and was comfortable with the risks I assumed. I had an amazing experience in Iceland, returning injury-free. Without this knowledge, I might have not participated in a once-in-a-lifetime, Viking-infused event!

AROO!

Dr. Joel Shapiro is a fantastic physician. He listened, diagnosed and repaired. I felt he was always looking out for my best interest and kept me honest when I wanted to get back to working out after surgery. He has a great sense of humor and bedside manner; he will listen and take the time for you to understand what's need and the best course of action. The staff was always great including his surgical team. I have complete confidence in him and would recommend him to any of my friends and family.

I was worried that my shoulder injury would mean the end of my sports activities. I have done well and recovered fully. The care I received was expert as well as compassionate. Truly great doctors are hard to find. I'd definitely recommend Dr Shapiro.
