Dr. Simrita Singh's psychiatry practice blatantly takes advantage of people's desperation given the difficulty of accessing psychiatric care if you don't have the "cadillac" health insurance plan. Their goal seems to take as much of your money as possible. My first visit cost me--coincidentally--my FULL ANNUAL DEDUCTIBLE for out-of-network treatment--over $200. If you need to reschedule and fail to give them FOUR DAYS' notice, it's a $75 fee. If you show up more than 15 MINUTES late, she will not see you, and will still charge you $75. (Of course, if she is late for you, she doesn't compensate YOUR time.)

Now, I understand that doctors need to pay their bills and that patients who flake are a problem. But Dr. Singh doesn't even TRY to work with you. Example: I had an appointment at 3PM. Stuff happened that was beyond my control, but I still tried to make the appointment, and even called to let them know I was running late. I got there at 3:20, by which time she was already seeing her 3:30 patient. Totally understandable. However, the 3:30 patient was finished by 3:34 (I was looking at my watch as she walked out the door), meaning that Dr. Singh now had fully enough time to fit me in. But she refused. She would not even speak to me, but rather sent the receptionist to tell me that she had "other things to do" in that time--total BS, because that time slot was scheduled for the patient who took my slot. Basically, she CHOSE not to see me, even though she was not with a patient and I was right there waiting for her. And for this treatment, I get charged $75.

Now, if the care were amazing, or if she were serving a wealthy community, perhaps I would understand these fees. But Oakland is not wealthy, and the care is nothing to write home about. Dr Singh evinces no empathy or compassion whatsoever. I went in with a positive attitude about trying to take control of my mental health, and came out feeling like I had "problems." Another of her patients who is a friend of mine told me she makes him feel "crazy," but after sinking the $200 into the first visit, he can't afford to start over elsewhere. She also told me that the drug she prescribed me would not aggravate my migraines, which is totally false (thankfully, the pharmacist at Walgreen's was more on top of it and less pill-happy).

Bottom line: find a mental health professional who will EMPOWER you, not exploit you.
