I took a liking to working out with kettlebells after trying a couple videos at home. I decided I wanted to take an actual class, so I did a quick internet search for kettlebell classes offered in midtown, and found Smart Workout. Well, I am so happy I happened to stumble upon Smart Workout in my search because my overall experience was great. To start out, the class was small, only myself and three other people. The trainer was fantastic. She showed us all of the correct techniques in detail. I did not feel intimidated asking questions, and I knew I was getting an extremely personalized workout because of the class size. I was 100% satisfied and will definitely be looking into more of the classes Smart Workout has to offer.
Also,a colleague of mine took a TRX class at Smart Workout and said it was great. I'll have to look into TRX next.

I went to Smart Workout for a personal training session after I had call saying I wanted to get back into shape after having a baby. They gave me a complementary session with a very friendly trainer that greeted me at the door by my name!

TRX was amazing at Smart Workout. I had initially saw this TRX class on television and have wanted to try it for a while, but was too frightened to look confused and take it with 30 other people who knew exactly what they were doing. I also thought that TRX involved hanging upside down from the ceiling, so I was worried that I could get hurt without the right supervision. Well, I took a TRX class at Smart Workout, which is a beautiful, clean and bright gym in midtown NYC. There were 4 of us in the class, which is the maximum that they allow to ensure quality instructing throughout the class. The entire class utilized my own body weight (however much or little I felt comfortable doing) in various exercises using the TRX like lunges, rows and chest press to name a few. The instructor, Sandi, was very knowledgeable and gave each of us corrections throughout the class to ensure our safety. I was so glad that I took TRX at Smart Workout and not somewhere else, because it allowed me to get a great workout and feel comfortable using an unfamiliar equipment and getting the attention I needed to execute the exercises properly.

Smart Workout has a Sampler that is simply the best deal in NYC for any gym. Not only does it include Pilates on the reformer machine, but it lets you choose the classes that you want to take on the days and times that you want to take them. The staff and instructors are great and they even have private bathrooms and a private steam shower and sauna, which they give you big bath towels for, so that I can pop in during lunch and then clean up quickly and get back to work! Fantastic!!

I tried out a Pilates Reformer class last week at Smart Workout. I was nervous at first because it was my first time taking it after my girlfriend (who is in amazing shape) persuaded me and recommended this gym. She brought me with her to try a class, and I was so worried (even tho the instructor told me not to worry) that I would not be able to keep up with the pace of more advanced participants. Well the instructor was right!! Not only was the Pilates Reformer class fantastic, but the teacher gave each participant modifications to do for many of the exercises so that each person was working at their own level. I completely fell in love with Pilates! The instructor was great and my abs were so sore the next day that I decided that Smart Workout is the perfect place to switch up my normal solitary gym routine, and get my summer body back!!

Smart Workout offers innovative classes. 'Fun in the Sun' is a small group class that incorporates summertime activities like surfing on the BOSU, beach ball tossing, and walking with weights on your ankles.

This class is really creative because it takes regular exercises like squats and lunges and creates more exciting moves like surfing and playing volleyball. It take regular equipment like the BOSU floor mat and creates a surf board and beach towel. Fun music, great instructors, I had a great time working out and I felt greatly worked out with 'Fun in the Sun'!

I checked out Smart Workout after i recieved a free day pass from my company...and bought a membership after I took the kickboxing and trampoline classes! The variety of classes is great for me. Most of the time, I only have an hour during or after work to squeeze in a workout, so I always look forward to something new and different during my time there.

I also started taking classes on the Pilates reformer machines when I became a member, and now I'm completely hooked! My core strength gained through Pilates has definitely helped with all my other workouts. Also, I don't pay anything extra for the classes!

The staff is always friendly and upbeat, so I consider my workouts to be one of the highlights of my day.

I took Pilates on the Reformer for a semester in college and subsequently my core became stronger, while my spine became more supple and flexible. Having a severe case of lordosis, I really need the Reformer to target and facilitate my trunk movement. After graduating, I realized how expensive a Pilates Reformer class was, and was not able to afford the classes- until I found Smart Workout. I was amazed that the reformer classes were inclusive in the membership price and that I received individualized attention because there were only up to four people in each class! They also offer the classes at convenient times throughout the day, so I can always fit it into my schedule. Another benefit is that they call me to confirm my class reservation, reminding me how important it is to integrate working out into my daily routine.

The environment at Smart Workout cultivates a sense of attentiveness and comfort. After taking other classes that Smart Workout offers, such as yoga, warrior, and upper body conditioning- I realized that the same attention I received in my Pilates classes transferred to these classes. It is amazing that I can see and feel the results so quickly! I feel as if I am in comfort of my own house, but energized by everyone around me to live a healthier lifestyle.

The owners are insane. Everyone there is treated horribly and every single one of these reviews are fake! It's a small gym and it's disgusting that citysearch even allows this place to get 5 stars. As someone who used to be very close to the gym, I can say from experience that it is over priced and every single "instructor" there has no training. Spend your money elsewhere PLEASE!

I always wanted to take a Pilates Reformer class, but I had never realized just how expensive they can be. About a year ago, I belonged to a gym that had Pilates Reformer, but charged an extra fee to take the class. When I had heard about Smart Workout and how the Reformer class was included in the membership fee, I had to try it out...and I loved it!!!

After the first few classes, I really felt like I was improving. The instructors were so patient with me, and I appreciated all the attention I received. I started taking other classes at Smart Workout and realized that this personal attention was a part of EVERY class because they have a 4-person limit. I was so happy to find this gym, and feel that so many others will be happy to try it too!

Smart Workout is a beautiful new facility right in the heart of Mid Town Manhattan! The staff is super friendly and accommodating to everyone that I saw walk through the door.

I joined this health club after being very unhappy working out at various chain gyms in the city and paying an arm and a leg on top of the already expensive monthly dues for Pilates training. Smart Workout has Pilates Mat and Reformer not only included in a really reasonable price, but an unlimited number that you can go to during the week. The best part is also that there is usually only 1-2 people in many of the daytime fitness classes (including Pilates Reformer), so what I used to pay for personal training is included for Free!!!

This Place is a hidden treasure that everyone should check out!!"

I had become out of shape after the stress and hectic life I had- and the teachers and classes at Smart Workout helped me!

I was a very fit woman when I was younger, and always enjoyed exercising. Anything from hiking to swimming; if it was fun and I was moving and burning calories- I did it. After I had 3 kids, and became a more busy with my business, my exercise routine suffered.

I know many women are in this predicament, and I am telling you- this is a great gym for anyone who is looking to get back into shape. The teachers really pay attention to you- I got to know what it meant to have proper form because someone was always right there.

Some of the other reviews were talking about trainers that weren't certified and didn't know what they were doing. Well, those trainers are now gone- because that was definitely NOT my experience here!!! I think they know FAR more than many of the other personal trainers I went to.

This is not an overbearing in your face kind of atmosphere. Everyone is friendly, and I really feel like they are there to help ME. And they actually CARE if I am getting stronger and healthier.

All in all, I think this is a great place for anyone to work out- especially if they are just starting up again!!!!!

This gym is unlike any other I have ever encountered! The atmosphere is completely different and makes me want to work out more! The small gym is a much friendlier and more comfortable environment than the other large gyms in the city, and I do not feel intimidated upon walking in. Quiet the contrary, I feel like I am walking into a friend's home.

The staff is very accommodating and teach great classes. I was surprised to read the other reviewers saying how the classes were lame, but I had a great workout and fun with my trainer. It felt like I was working out with someone I knew, not like I was just another face in the crowd.

After working out with a personal trainer for years, I feel like I received more personalized attention and had a more efficient workout here. I will be savings tons this year by coming to the semi-private trainings, and in this economy, who wouldn't love that!

This gym is unprofessional- and the owner is completely unethical. She takes advantage of her staff, and becomes unpleasant and rude to the gym members after she has them sign a contract. As a former member, I encourage men and women looking for a gym to look into other options. For the money that you spend, get a certified trainer. I spoke to a member of the staff, and was disappointed to hear that the staff is not certified to teach the classes, (other than Pilates). Also- When I was a member, the Pilates machines were machines that you would get at K-mart, and also were not cleaned for significant periods of time. For the amount of $$, you can get a personalized workout at Equinox, or NY Health and Racquet Club.

The other reviewers weren't kidding. The studio is basically a duplex apartment with a pretty good selection of equipment in there but the only thing that the people in there said that was good was the Pilates class on the reformer.
I thought I'd try it, sat down before the class and lo and behold, the last reviewer was right. The overwhelming smell of the apparatus sent me running to the bathroom to wash my hands.
Can I recommend that studios that use equipment that has material straps instead of rubber/plastic wash it down frequently? I can?t imagine the bacteria that was on that thing.

Instead I took a dance class. I?m no Ginger Rogers but the class was so terrible I had to laugh. The secretary elaborated that classes were indeed taught by inexperienced secretaries who were trained by the ogre who emerged later from downstairs who promptly greeted me politely then turned and started screaming at her staff as if they were indentured servants.
It?s a real shame that this place isn?t more professional as the idea for a small gym is great but this one just isn?t it.

I decided to use my free day pass and WOW--am I ever glad I did. I did Pilates on the Reformer and Wedge and left feeling good and happy and on my way to fitness. The gym is clean and bright and cheerful; the staff is friendly, and seem truly concerned about how I was doing in the class. There are so many classes to choose from, I hardly know what to try first--since I signed up on the spot. I strongly recommend Smart Workout for personalized, attentive, and fun fitness.

Last week I went to Smart Workout to use my one day free pass and I could not believe what a fabulous place I found. I arrived a few minutes before the class was scheduled to begin and I was greeted by a very nice young lady who made me feel very welcomed. She gave me a tour before I began my class and introduced me to the trainers that were going to teach the classes that I was going to take. The tour was very helpful because I saw how clean, bright, and cozy Smart Workout realy is. I took Pilates and Katami (a total body class) and both classes were fantastic. Both classes had 4 people which allowed the trainer to pay attention to each student in the class. This is definitely one of the perks of being a Smart Workout member. I recommend Smart Workout to anyone who is looking for personal training with a twist. The twist is that you have so many classes that you can choose from yet you get individualized attention in each and every one. I joined today. You should do the same.

Pros: Private, personal trainings, a lot of variety in class offerings, and only 2 blocks away from Grand Central

this has got to be the best deal in town. they say they offer "unlimited semi-private trainings for one all-inclusive fee", and they don't lie. They limit registration to all their classes to just 4 people, and then at the last minute, one or two people need to cancel, so most classes have just one or two people in them. and if you are the only person in the class, which happens a lot, you can have the instructor give any kind of class you'd like. The classes are given all day long, continuously, so you can work out whenever you'd like. And there's such an original and diverse array of clsses! I love to dance, so this place is perfect for me. They have Zumba, and Swing, and hip-hop yoga, belly dance, Pole dance, ballet burn, tango, and more.
and this gym included Pilates on the Reformer machine as part of the membership--no additional fees---and lots of yoga, several are 90 minutes long.
I love that the bathrooms are private, and they give you full body towels (Ralph Lauren---a nice touch)
Most of all, I like that it's such a friendly place. They call themselves the "cheers "of gyms---everybody knows your name

Visited this gym recently upon a websearch for "smart" gyms near Grand Central Station. This sleek, cosy health club looked sharp from the moment I stepped inside. The first thing I noticed were the brand new shiny bamboo floors and red colored workout equipment. It's ultra modern living room feel was very inviting and I was immediately greeted with a cup of tea and a "welcome to Smart Workout".
I was given a brief tour of the studio which was designed by someone with very good taste. Stylish bath and shower rooms, a fancy spiral staircase just by the entrance adds a nice spice. The ipods that are available during your workout are quite the classy touch. Clearly this place caters to those who like the extra little things. While on my tour, I sampled the hydraulic resistance machines and was pleased to find free weights just by them as well. Although I didn't take the class, there was a Pilates session going on and I certainly want to return to try that. I was also amazed at the listing of classes they offer especially considering the space available. As far as signing up, I'm considering but will take my free class first and then decide.

Pros: Extremely convenient if you are by Grand Central Station. Stylish if you like that!

Cons: Small and only space for maybe 6 to a class. But that is a Pro also.

.

What a fantastic concept: Clean, bright, and elegant gym; small classes; personalized attention; caring and well trained instructors. A gym that actually cares if you show up or not. They call to remind you of a class and always seem genuinely happy to see me. The classes are always small; you never feel like you are just a number; the teacher knows your name and makes sure that you are doing everything to get the most benefit from that class (in the nicest possible, non judgemental way.)
I feel like a welcome guest when I walk in there. In fact, they greet everyone by name. There is such a wide variety of classes I sometimes don't know which one to sign up for. My favorites are Pilates on the Reformer, Pilates Mat, Yoga, On the Ball, and Spin. These guys are always trying to include something new in their schedule. I've been asked, more than once, for my input about new classes. To me that is proof positive that they care about what I think.
I only wish that there was more than one Smart Workout in Manhattan. I hope that they'll expand -- and soon!

Pros: Small and interesting classes, caring and educated instructors, bright, and clean.

Cons: Only one location.

Do not get suckered into buying a year membership ( the only membership they have!)
You will regret it fast!!! The owner is constantly screaming from the downstairs at her employees, the classes are pathetic and the showers are disgusting. The classes are taught by the secretaries and the space is just too small.... Equinox is just as expensive and totally worth your money!

Ha ha. The other reviewer is absolutely right. I went there also after seeing a flyer stating they did a free day of classes. Now I know why they are free. They are absolutely terrible!!

What passes for a class are teachers who don't seem to know what they aredoing teaching you something designed for a paraplegic or someone over 80 years old. There is NO workout. The area to take a workout class is so small that you could probably touch all 4 walls if you stretched too far.

The old woman (I guess she's the manager or owner) seems to be suffering from some kind of severe bipolar disorder where she would greet you one minute and within seconds pounce on you aggresively trying to force membership down your throat. She's one of those poeple who carrying a tazer would be a good idea because she seemed to bnot be all there.

They only have yearly membership she said and when I heard the price I was like "whoa there". This has to be one of the most expensive gyms in the city. She informed me that this price was a 'special' and in the new year their prices will go up even hgiher!!

For what you would pay to go there you could pay far less at one of the bigger gyms that actually have clients (total 4 hours there at peak period and I only encountered two other clients) and more equipment.

I did a pilates class in which the machine had obviously not been washed for a long time and smelled like unwashed feet. The gym overall is way too small to even be a gym. It is more like someone put some basic equipment in their apartment and started charging for it.

I recommend that you spend your money on a place with good trainers, space, better equipment and teachers who you know now more than you do about fitness. I was informed by one of the staff themselves that they believe that this place will go out of business within a year. Not much of an incentive to join when even the staff aren't confident.

Pros: Great quick exit to Grand Central

Cons: Tiny, no clients, evil management, badly done classes

Came In a few weeks ago just for a tour...Was Basically bombarded with information from a heavy set older woman, and chased into the elevator while she was still talking (or yelling) about prices and specials......Seems like a nice clean gym, TOO MUCH sales pressure!
