Dr. Susan Smith is an extremely experienced psychologist. The first reviewer is a big reason why I'm posting a review. Also because Dr. Smith is so well-known in Reno, a review isn't considered necessary in my opinion. I learned a long time ago in my economics class, "There's no such thing as free lunch." If you don't have your insurance figured out, don't call an insurance-covered service. Otherwise, Susan D Smith PHD is a wonderful psychologist who helps change the lives of many people. She is a guaranteed great decision when choosing a therapist, long-term or just a few sessions.

Dr. Smith is a great counselor and is helping me a great deal with some transition issues I am having. She is positive and upbeat, considerate and thoughtful. Her office is comfortable and calming and is in a great location. Everything she has "gently suggested" I do has improved my outlook and I trust her to continue to guide me through these rough seas.

The office is rather plain and not fancy at all - which appealed to me. It feels more like you are in a home visiting with a friend. There are couches and lots of kleenex and I always have a little cup of water.

I read the other review too. I think you have to see it from her perspective. I think she does her own billing, presumably to keep the costs down, so she doesn't have a staff of terse people to run interference for her while she blithely welcomes people with gracious smiles. The firm-handed approach to explaining her payment policies caught me off guard, but after I thought about it, a lot of people probably don't pay or say they are insured and aren't or pass her a bad check or don't understand their own insurance policies. It must be hard to balance that with offering counseling, which is a service which, once rendered, cannot be repossesed for non-payment. I assure you, if it bothers you, once you work out the financial aspect and make it clear you understand it's no problem. She values her own time and makes no secret of it - because it is her business.

Dr. Smith is great and I am glad to have found her! - L

To be honest, I never got to the point of meeting with Dr. Smith. She was quite frankly, curt and very uptight during our initial phone discussion pertaining to cost, insurance, and appointment times. Her response to my work hours was that I could pay for a full hour and show up for whatever time was left after the appointment start time. She said that I was the customer (to the insurance company - not her obviously), and the insurance company should tell me how they will pay after 60-90 days of me paying her fees up front. I felt a bit uneasy at this point, as if she was projecting her experiences with other hard to collect from clients in my direction. When I asked for suggestions as how to best acheive good results with getting paid from the insurance carrier, she said that would be at least an hour long conversation, and she was very busy and had to go. I told her that sounded best for both parties, she asked me if we were still on for our appointment, and I hung up the phone at that point. I later called back to cancel my appointment. I honestly felt completely disinterested in any further discussion, "being the customer", or in paying for $135 dollar per hour future frustration sessions. I would say that I was sincerely confused as to how any person who puts their pants on in the morning the same way anyone else does would expect their prospective client to not be interested in at least a lighthearted attempt at genuine interest and sincerity. I have never written an internet review before, and I was genuinely struck by my experience. Maybe it was just a bad day.
