Dr. Shlafer is an excellent doctor!! I was amazed at how compassionate and concerned he was about my child's eye, as well as the fact that we do not currently have insurance. He was so compassionate that he told the front staff to REIMBURSE ME BECAUSE HE WAS NOT GOING TO CHARGE ME!! I couldn't believe it. Prior to contacting his office, I spent the entire morning on the phone calling various other offices explaining my situation trying to get my child in for an appointment and the only doctor who would see us today without insurance and with the possibility of having to make payments was Dr. Shafler!! It was such a load off my shoulders to know that my child would be seen today. When I went into his office the staff was very friendly and professional and Dr. Sharper was joking with us and making us feel so comfortable and cared for. He explained what was wrong withy child's eye and when he realized that he didn't have any samples to give me he made sure to write out a prescription that I could afford. He was so sensitive to our needs. I never felt rushed out the door. He took his time with us. The most meaningful part about my experience was that my child told me he really liked "that doctor" (Dr. Shafler) and asked me if that could be his doctor from now on! My child has never asked me that. We love Dr. Shafler and are looking forward to many years under his care.

We switched to Dr. Shlafer in 2001 and all of our three children (ages 3,4 and 13 love him)...He is an exceptional pediatrician, very understanding, trustworthy, cares about his patients and parent's concerns. One reason why he says parents know their children best is, because that's the truth; we spend more time with our children and doctors are there to help us...My son was diagnosed at Children's Hospital for ADHD and had learning and speech delays due to ear infections he referred us to a specialist for ear tubes and they were very helpful, he never got infections again. Dr. Shlafer did not medicate him, instead he was very supportive with our decision with helping our son cope through his condition through counseling, social and speech therapy. We parents have a choice to say no to medication if you are opposed to it. What some people lack is knowledge, there are alternatives and Dr. Shlafer will support your decisions.

Regardless of the negative feedbacks that are posted here...the positives outweigh them and that should tell anyone how wonderful Dr. Shlafer is.

When I brought my son to see him he never even talked to my son and diagnosed him as adhd and put him on Medicine for it (which turned him into a zombie). He simply said "what do you think is wrong" I said I think he has add or something he said "ok you him mom you know best" and wrote me out a prescription What? I know best? Ok so who went to medical school?
It turns out my son is autistic and not only did he give him medication for something he did not have but according to another doctor he gave him a overdose of the medication. It was three times as much as recommended for his height and weight!.
So be warned!

Could these reviews be anymore rigged? I can't believe that this is the same place I went to.

And whenever you start spouting off about your "Dad's former patient in a review and then get the lawyer involved to discredit a patient- well that's a direct HIPAA violation - you cannot discuss patient confidentiality with anyone that does not have a medical need to know this information. Using YELP or CITY SEARCH as a way to discuss someone that you have had as a patient (or your dad or his lawyer) is absolutely unprofessional and a violation of federal law.

Dr. Shlafer is an excellent pediatrician that a parent can find in the area. He is trustworthy, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. Both of my kids have been with him since we came to the area 4 years ago and we have been very happy with him and his service. We put our kids 100% to his hand and trust his sound judgments on all occasions. He is a very cool doctor with exceptional experience. He always make the right diagnoses and provide thoughtful and educational information to us so that we understand what is going on and what we should be expecting during any treatments. He is willing to take/make calls from/to us out of his office hours to discuss any situations that we have concerns over our kids' health.

In comparison with other doctors who always treat their patients in a hurry, he is very patient to listen to our concerns and address them timely. Obviously all medicines have some side effects and it is better to not take any unless it is absolutely necessary. He would not hesitate to tell you that your child does not need to take any at some situations. We should have had many more such doctors as Dr. Shlafer in the region and the country.

Like others I do feel sorry for Brandy Young and her loss of her child. I am not in a position to make any judgment over her case but our experience with Dr Shlafer has been exceptional.

The only drawback is that some of his nurses are not so professional in some cases and I hope that they can also live up to the high standard that Dr. Shlafer has for his patients.

Dr. Stephen Shlafer is an amazing pediatrician. We were referred to him 5 years ago when my daughter was clearly sick, but her pediatrician at the time was just chalking it up to her just being a "small" baby. Even though we had only met him during our initial appointment (In which he recommended that I bring her into Children's Hospital right away) he called to check up on her 2-3 times, each day, for the week that we were there. He even went over with me what I should expect from the hospital before I even drove down there.

Where most Dr??s seem to want to get you in and out of their offices as fast as possible, Dr. Shlafer takes his time with his patients, always thoroughly explains EXACTLY what is going on with your child, and answers any questions you may have. Throughout our years with him we have unfortunately had some financial setbacks and he has still never turned us away. He truly cares about each one of his patients.
I am not sure exactly what happened in the case of Brandy Young, but none of what Dr Shlafer is accused of sounds like his way of practicing at all. My heart aches for her loss, but there has got to be part of the story that is missing.

I highly recommend Dr. Shlafer! There should be more Dr??s out there just like him...In fact I wish I could find a Dr that cared about my health as he does his patients!

Dr. Stephen Shlafer was recommended to me by another parent when I voiced my unhappiness with the passive care my then-1 y/o son was receiving from his pediatrician. We switched to Dr. Shlafer, and I am SO glad we did (my son is now 10, and my daughter is 7). With my background as an emergency room nurse and as the mother of two children who have had health problems, I believe I am qualified to recommend Dr. Shlafer.

Dr. Shlafer is an example of what physicians used to be more like before managed care turned the vast majority of them into employees who are forced to see an unreasonable number of patients (spending only a few minutes with each) and who feel pressured to limit referrals and treatment. Unlike most physicians these days, Dr. Shlafer never hesitates to refer to a specialist when needed and never hesitates to order important tests to assist in his diagnosis. He is hands-on and accessible nights and weekends. He rarely takes time away from his work, and (the last time I checked) he is in his office 5 1/2 days/week as a sole practitioner.

Even if Dr. Shlafer had a less-than-ideal "bedside manner," I would take my children to him because of his genuine care and concern for them and because of his high level of medical competence. Fortunately, Dr. Shlafer is also highly-personable, funny, and great with kids and parents! :)

I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Shlafer!

Our 3 children have always gone to Dr. Shlafer - he was there the minute my son Collin was born and stayed with him for 3 weeks at Steven's Hospital - checking on him 3/4 times a day. Our children are 18, 12 and 11. Our 18 year old daughter Casey has been a patient of Dr. Shlafer's since she was 2 years old - I was heart broken when she turned 18 and could no longer go there. He definately yields on the side of caution and has always provided thorough care for our children. All three had terrible bouts with asthma in their younger days in which he worked side by side with an Asthma specialist to treat them. I was saddened to read the feedback by Brandy Young - I'm sure everyone's heart goes out to that family. I must say though - we have been very pleased with the care he has provided to our children for the past 16 years - between asthma, colds, flu's, ADHD, physicals, ear troubles - he has handled them all with professional integrity.

Pros: they accept every form of insurance from medical coupons to Premera to Blue Cross

I love Dr. Shlafer!! He puts no limit on how many financially challenged families he helps as many doctors do. My wife and I trust everything he says and remembers us everytime we are there and that is usually for regular check-ups. I would recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Shlafer is hands down the best doctor we have ever had. I am the mother of 3 children, the oldest who is turning 18 soon. Dr. Shlafer has been our family pediatrician from the moment our oldest daughter was born. I will, without hesitation, continue to recommend him to anyone. I have always found him to be kind, funny, and great with the kids- but above all else- he is a concerned and caring doctor. My oldest daughter was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes 6 years ago, and Dr. Shlafer caught it quickly for us- and immediately directed us to Childrens Hospital. He would not even allow me to wait until my husband got home that evening- he advised us to get there ASAP. From that moment on, our lives where changed forever. I have always found him to err on the side of caution- from a small bump to a mysterious lump- he will make sure that all examinations are done, and all testing is complete. He is always available, always kind, and takes the time to talk and joke with the kids, to make sure they are at ease. My kids never felt anxious when it was time to "go to the Doctor"- and as a parent, I will always appreciate what he has done for us, and the care he has given my family. I will be quite sad when all of my children are grown and cannot be a patient any longer.

Hello all, I'm Emily Shlafer, Dr. Shlafer's daughter. Although I don't know the specifics of what happened with Ms. Young, I do recall my father talking to me about the situation and feeling genuinely heartbroken about the condition of the girl, wanting to do as much as he could. Ms. Young, my heart goes out to you for your loss, and I give you my biggest condolences. But please, don't blame my father. He's a wonderful doctor with years of experience, and he always puts his patients very first. Money is definitely NOT first priority with him... he has many a patient who cannot afford adequate healthcare and still treats their children for a price they can afford. He spends as much time treating patients as possible, and is currently taking a 5-day break for the first time in over a year to help my brother move into his apartment in Minnesota. He will also take phone calls from patients who call his answering service past clinic hours, for which he does not get paid a dime--he simply does it because he genuinely cares about their children. Again Ms. Young, I am very sorry for what you have had to go through, but I ask that you please do not put the blame on my father. He is a kind, caring, wonderful man, and his prime concern is the well-being of his patients.

The employees at North Sound Pediatrics have always been caring as well as knowledgable of pediatrics.
Dr. Shlafer gives excellent care in a professional manner. His common sense approach to ped's is refreshing. My grandson has grown under his watchful eye. My daughter and I are so thankful we found a pediatrician that practices similarily like our pediatrician who recently retired. I am hoping Dr. Slafter will remain in practice for all my grandchildren as they are born.
Dr. Shalfer has no problem seeing under insured patients which is refreshing in today's reinbursement problems in medicine.
While I worked in ped's we had a couple of children pass away. All of us who work in ped's understand how devistating it is to lose a child. Thank goodness death of a child happens rarely but when it happens it is felt by everyone in the pediatric clinic.
Only the brightest and caring go into ped's and Dr. Shafler fits that
mold.

NOTICE TO ALL: The posting by Brandy Young on June 19, 2008 is false, misleading, and defamatory. As the attorney for Dr. Shlafer and North Sound Pediatrics, I am compelled to correct what Ms. Young has inappropriately written. She fails to state that she filed a formal action about the unfortunate death of her child and that, in that formal action, she not only named Dr. Shlafer as a defendant but also named Providence Everett Medical Center and Radia Medical Imaging. Importantly, she fails to state that the Superior Court dismissed Dr. Shlafer from that formal action without any finding of fault on his part and without any money being paid by or for him to Ms. Young or to anyone. She fails to state that the evidence uncovered in the case revealed that the health care Dr. Shlafer provided to Carter did not violate the applicable standard of care. She fails to state that the evidence in the case also revealed that the health care Dr. Shlafer provided neither caused harm to nor the death of Carter. Dr. Shlafer is and always has been saddened by Carter's death. Certainly, Ms. Yound remains understandably saddened by her loss. However, contrary to what Ms. Young would have you believe, the reality is that Dr. Shlafer was not in any manner responsible for Carter's death. Strictly from a personal standpoint, if any of my four children ever have children of their own and live in the area, I would not hesitate for one moment to recommend to my children to place the health and well-being of my grandchildren in Dr. Shlafer's good hands and judgment.

I would NOT recomend Dr. Stephen Shlafer for any parent. I lost a daughter to meningitis after trusting her care to this man. For 6 weeks she was seen by Dr. Shlafer regarding an ear infection. She was given three- 10 day rounds of antibiotics (augmentin, very strong antibiotic) and seen repeatedly because of her decline in health. She even had a lump behind her ear and I was told by shlafer that this was the lymph node taking on the infection. Well, it was not. It was mastoiditis, which was a result of her ongoing ear infection. Eventually, Dr. Shlafer refused to see us outright. Both of my daughters had seen him since birth and HE DROPPED THEM AS PATIENTS! He even sent me a letter that states I obviously needed to find another doctor if I am not happy with the care they were receiving. We basicaly drove him nuts with our constant nagging about how our beutiful daughter was getting worse. Since we no longer had a doctor, I took my daughter to the emergency room and she was diagnosed and airlifted to Childrens Hospital. She died a week later from meningitis. I wish I would have trusted my instincts. I saw all of these people in his office being herded thru like sheep and Dr. Shlafer seemed to care more about his baseball memorabilia and season tickets than my child. I listened to the words he told me that I needed to be patient, that SHE WOULD GET BETTER! He is a doctor raking in some big cash with all the patients he can cram in his office and he loves all of his baseball stuff he can buy with your cash so, go ahead and take your kids there, but please, ASK HIM ABOUT CARTER MCCOLLUM! 3/28/00-2/10/02

I trust his knowledge and experience and happy to have Dr. Shlafer as my son?s pediatrician.
