I had never been to this hospital prior to my visit the week after fathers day. I had been sunburned pretty bad and was having an allergic reaction to it. I went to this hospital seeking relief and comfort. I had previously taken 2 benadryls at an attempt to stop the itching, I was experiencing, with no relief. Upon entering the hospital I was itching my back in a vigorous motion. The lady at the front desk handed me the check in papers and seemed irrated as soon as I politely asked her regarding the wait time. I then sat down, continuously rubbing my back up and down on the chair to ease the itching I was experiencing. Once I was in the er room, I had the finical officer with her computer take my information before I even saw a doctor. She did not comment on my condition, nor comfort me in anyway; she just attended to the matter of payment and billing info. Then the doctor had arrived in the room after 15 mins of waiting, no nurse had offered me medicine or any kind words. Then the doctor proceeded to lecture and talk down to me on the dangers of not wearing enough sun block. He proceeded to tell me, I need to put every moisturizing lotion on. I explained to him, I had done every home remedy (including putting tons of aloe on) and the hospital had been my last gleam of hope to curb the insane itching I was suffering from. He then proceeded to act as though he was agitated I had even come to his hospital and told me he felt no pity due to, I had quote done this to myself. He continued to look at me and speak to me in such a rude manner, that I wished I had never come to him. I told him I did not do this to myself on purpose and to please help me. He stated I am trying to help you. I asked "how you have done nothing but make me feel like a criminal since you came in this room." He still at this point refused to give me any medicine, he stated I had already taken benadryl and there was nothing further he could do for me. I looked at him holding back tears and told him I don??t know why you won??t help me, I came here to be helped and you do not care about me. He then started to raise his voice with me and said "What do you want me to do prescribe Prednisone?"(which is a steroid commonly used for allergic reactions)" I will never prescribe that it causes cataracts in short term treatments!" "Is that what you want!!?? "Cataracts!!" I then exclaimed "I had this happen to me once before when I was little and that is what they gave me and I do not have cataracts." "I have been on that medication several times in my life as a matter a fact." I then stated ??I didn't ask you for that anyway, I will take anything to help me right now, so if that??s the only thing, please give it to me. He refused and left the room. I then sat and waited, never in my life had I felt so horrible for coming to a hospital. I then over heard the doctor in the hallway saying horrible things about me to the nurses, and advising then to keep it short when they come back in. I then had a nurse bring me my release papers and prescription paper, with a set of pink pills. I have no clue what these were, but she gave them to me to take. I at that point just wanted to get out of there, I did not ask anymore questions, nor did she ask me if I had any. I then walked out of the room and caught a quick mean glance from the doctor as he sat at the computer at the desk area in the er. I did not want him to see me cry, I was not going to give him the satisfaction. As I headed to my car, still itching like crazy, I was relieved to be out of that hospital. I called my mother for comfort and to tell her what had happened, as I drove away. I then arrived at the pharmacy, and gave the woman my prescription slip. She then asked me, ??What did you go to the hospital for?? since she could tell I was still itching. I told her and she said they gave you heartburn medication, did you know this? I told her I was unaware what I had been given prior to leaving or what was prescribed. She insisted on calling the hospital to make sure it was not a mistake. They never returned her call. She then directed me to a doctor??s office down the street, to receive treatment. I went to the office and received medicines which helped me and comfort from a caring and concerned physician.

I took my screaming 9 month old to the ER one early, early morning to be checked out. The dr did no tests and barely even checked him out. They gave us an RX for Tylenol with codeine and sent us on our way. They did no blood work or even check his ears. I felt that we were rushed out of there with no more answers on what was wrong with my son than when we got there. The nurses were very nice and they got us into an exam area quickly but the dr rushed thru it all.

I can say with all honesty that they have good individual departments, each one well run. However, the emergency room needs a better management team. I have sat there for hours sometimes before going to triage, then another hour before going in the back for treatment. Too many people use this service for a regular doctor, that actual emergencies have to wait. I slight runny nose should be handled by family drs and not a trained staff of emergecy drs.

PROS: good location, good drs
CONS: long waits even when bleeding or in pain

Pocono Medical Center is a good local hospital. It has gotten better over the years. The ER is a very good place to go in an emergency. The staff is friendly and helpful. They take many many types of insurance. Many of the local doctors use this hospital for their tests. I have only ever had good experiences here. There is no need to travel 45 minutes to go to another hospital.
