I cannot speak highly enough of the Social Anxiety Institute in Phoenix, AZ.

For years I knew something was off, but I didn't know what it was. I felt easily intimidated by authority figures (bosses and high-profile people I met or worked with) no matter how nice they were; I felt inferior to anyone I met whom I perceived to be smarter, more attractive, etc. than I; I disliked (and even avoided) going to parties or other social functions because I felt that I never fit in, and I had a lot of trouble establishing and maintaining friendships. Yikes, what a way to live, right?!

In January 2008 I happened to do a Google search on "socially awkward" to see if I could find some answers. I came across a description of social anxiety disorder (SA), together with a list of seven SA symptoms. I had experienced every one of them. I knew then that that was what I've had all my adult life!

I searched online further to see how SA was treated and found the SAI Web site. They offer an audio series on overcoming SA as well as SA groups that meet in Phoenix. I called to get more information and after two meetings with the founder and director of SAI (to diagnose officially whether I had SA and discuss whether joining the group would be a good move for me), I was invited to join the group. I moved to Phoenix from another state, and in the six weeks since the group started, I already see significant, positive changes in my outlook and my ability to interact with other people effectively. I'm in my late forties, so this is no small feat! The good news is that SA can be completely overcome. Meaning, once you do the SA therapy, you can live the rest of your life SA-free.

Millions of people have SA and don't know it. If any of what I've written resonates with you, please read up on SA and know that help is readily available. I highly recommend SAI and its therapy programs!
