Good dentist, horrible front office. STEER CLEAR OF THIS OFFICE.

My wife and I had our first appointments with Torrance Dental Associates recently. It turns out that they will be our LAST appointments as well. Dr. Sako was friendly and knowledgeable. So it is a shame how rude, unprofessional, and apparently dishonest the front office is.

During my appointment, Dr. Sako performed my examination and explained his recommended procedures to me. Brenda, apparently the person in charge of billing, then consulted with me and reiterated the recommended procedures and the costs. I declined all recommended procedures, as I was working on a tight schedule that day, and specifically indicated that I wanted only the oral exam and standard cleaning that day that were fully paid for semi-annually by my insurance plan. There would be one co-pay procedure to me that day for oral antibiotic gel, for which my co-pay was $20.

When I checked out, I was billed $90. I was pretty certain that my co-pay should have been only $20, but I didn't have my benefits schedule with me (with this office, bring your benefits schedule with you and demand a WRITTEN list of procedures and costs before receiving treatment!!!), and I was in a rush, so I paid $90 and figured I could easily reconcile with the front office later. When I returned from vacation a week later, I phoned the office and attempted to have a civil discussion with Brenda to reconcile the obvious overcharge. Brenda REFUSED to hear my side of things, despite the fact that I paid $90 for a procedure with a co-pay of $20. There was really nothing to discuss, but Brenda refused to listen to me, kept interrupting me to tell me how things work in her office, and refused to admit that I had been overcharged. Very frustrating. Then she conveniently added an additional procedure that had not been performed, which carried with it a $50 co-pay, obviously to cover much of the $70 credit I was due! At no point during my appointment had I been I advised of this procedure, nor was I billed for it when I checked out following my appointment. Only after I raised the fact that I had been over charged on another procedure did Brenda advise me that she was billing for an additional procedure. I think most people would call this type of activity FRAUDULENT.

I discussed the issue with my insurance company, and while they sided with me, they said that in this case they were basically powerless. They suggested that I communicate with the dentist directly. So for the next 2 and a half weeks I called to request an opportunity to speak with Dr. Sako. And each time I called, I was told that Dr. Sako was with a patient and that he would call me back. I never did receive a call back from Dr. Sako. Only in being persistent was I able to claim my $70 credit.

My wife observed Brenda being quite rough with an elderly patient during her visit. Apparently the patient did not fully understand all of the procedures that were being recommended, and Brenda became frustrated with the patient and was rude and irritated toward her. This was the same type of behavior that Brenda exhibited towards me while trying to resolve what should have been a simple, cut and dry issue, with a resolution which would include Brenda apologizing for the, ahem, "mistaken" over bill of $70, and IMMEDIATELY issuing me a credit. Not very smart business people running the office. They just lost 2 new patients with their rude, unprofessional behavior. STEER CLEAR OF THIS OFFICE.

I read some of the reviews and I've never had any problems with my families work. They always show and explain everything with their little camera and TV so its always clear what is needed. I would recommend this office to anyone. Their only thing is that there is a bit of a wait in the evening time when it's busiest.

I would not recommend this place. I went there for a routine checkup and the dentist said all my fillings needed replacing. I paid and on the first visit while filling some teeth she didn't leave spaces between them. They didn't return my calls. I went to another dentist for help. Later they tried to bill me for what I had already paid. You're better off going South on Crenshaw a few miles to Lomita Torrance Dental Associates. Good place, not fancy but good and ethical.

Like another reviewer, I was told I needed a deep cleaning that was not covered by my insurance and that would cost close to $600 dollars. I was also told that I had 5 "soon to be cavities" that needed to be taken care of. Each cavity would cost $15-25 dollars, however, they added a $45 desensitizing charge to each cavity that my insurance does not cover and is not required. They do not explain these charges to you and have a take it or leave attitude. I explained to the dentist I just wanted a normal cleaning and not the deep cleaning but he would not do that, so I left with out having anything done. In addition, they also tried to charge me $1200 for a crown that my insurance company verified that I should not be charged more than $180 for. They run this scam where they show you two sets of crowns... one with metal back for $800 and one full porcelain for $1200. The $1200 look great and the metal ones look like a pirate's tooth. I have a metal backed crown and it looks great and nothing like the junk they showed me. The office was very nice and they had all of the shiny high tech tools. Too bad they try to overcharge you and add un-needed services outside of your insurance to cover the cost of them. I will not go back and have filled a formal complaint with my insurance company regarding their unsavory business practices.

These guys are ridiculous. They always try to add a procedure that isn't covered by the your coverage and increase your out of pocket expense for NO REASON!! A routine cleaning is free but the medicine they use for the procedure is $90 and they wouldn't do the procedure without the additional medicine when I requested that I just wanted the cleaning without the medicine. I left the office disgusted. Every time I go to this office it's always something new. What's supposed to be covered by your dental insurance turns out to cost you additional money because TDA bills for procedures that aren't covered by your insurance. I had a procedure done to extract my wisdom teeth and it was CLEARLY covered by my insurance yet they needed additional $800 out of my pocket. If you're looking for AN HONEST business AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!

They recommended that I needed 12 fillings. I was extremely hesitant about this and went to another dentist for a second opinion and only needed 4! The dentist said the others were so minor that he would just monitor them. They also recommended that I needed a "deep cleaning," despite the fact that I had one of these performed 12 months prior. The other dentist did not recommend that I needed one of these procedures.

I read the review about the front office and completely agree with the comments about Brenda, their billing person. She was all about the "hard sell" and was unable to answer or understand the more detailed questions I had about the billing process. I was completely shocked that this practice would hire such an uneducated person to deal with such an important piece of the business. She is one of the main reasons I took my business elsewhere.

Bottom line is these dentists are looking out for themselves and put profits before their patients. If you're a patient go get a second opinion you might be surprised.

Do go to this place under any circumstances.
I went to Torrance Dental Associates once and will never go back. I have never had a filling before in my life and I end up walking away with a crown and 8 fillings that I found out later that I didn't need. They ground off half of a perfectly good tooth and put on a crown that wasn't needed. That tooth still pains me greatly almost a year later and it makes me very angry every time I try to eat something or drink something slightly hot or cold to know that this was completely unnecessary. I had absolutely no problems with it before. I wish somehow I could take the crown back and get my tooth back. They also put in 8 fillings in places where there was no cavaties, just fill up the natural indentations in my teeth.
They gave me the very distinct impression that all they wanted was my and my insurance company's money and could have cared less about my dental health.

I grew up in the South Bay and my parents were raised here as well. So needless to say, we know the region well. They and I have been to a number of local dentists and this office has always come through for us. When my Mom, who is now in her 80's came down with a fever from a tooth infection, we called them on a Sunday for help. They called back right away and gave her some medicine to help with the pain. We then were seen first thing Monday morning to get her tooth corrected. Thank goodness for this office. The Dentist said she could have ended up in the hospital it it weren't treated right away. I'll never forget this! Thanks

I had recently been to another office for a check up and wasn't impressed. So I decided to try out this office which is close to home. I was so impressed by the decor and staff at this office. Compared to the other offices I've been to (which has been a lot because my insurance has changed so many times) this one is the cleanest by far. The dentist is super professional and describes all the procedures in great detail with a small camera. He spent over 30 minutes with me, telling me what I needed and why. This is a definite plus. I've been very impressed thus far. I'll definitely bring my husband and kids soon.

I finally found an office where I can take my kids. I went in for a check up to see what kind of office this was and I was pleasantly surprised by how clean and professional the office was. They had televisions in the rooms and the doctor used a small camera to explain in detail everything I needed. Definitely a plus! I've been to other offices where it was cold and too business-like. I'm happy so far with this office and definitely will bring my family!

He should be ashamed. Why there is always other qualified people in thi great city. Such a shame & her poor business ethics

the facility is beautiful, the dentists and dental assistants friendly, professional and just plain good at what they do. that's why it is such a shame that their front office is so bad. on several occasions I have heard the girls in the front office speak to the dental assistants very rude, I have had to question the billing charges on the last two visits and had to get the insurance company involved, only then were they willing to listen. these ladies talk to the patients like their idiots and why should we question them. They make it seem like they're doing us a favor by being there. There resolution for us was "you can always go to another Dentist!" not a resolution. hopefully enough people will complain and they will get the message.

Torrance Dental Associates has a small office but the staff were very courteous and professional. I went there to get my tooth extracted and they were very good at explaining the procedures and even showed me a video about post-op care. I liked Dr. Krakowiak, the oral surgeon, who made me feel at ease. The extraction went well and I am satisfied with their service.

PROS: Good location, professional, courteous service
CONS:
