So I feel the need to tell everyone about my experience with a particular eye doctor (Dr. Thomas Unger in Troy, IL) . I had taken my son to get his eyes checked and the doctor told me that he would have to have surgery and that glasses would not help him. He has Hyperphoria in his right eye. He has trained his eyes to see the way he needs them to by only using one eye and/or tilting his head. I had no idea his eyes were so bad. But now I have taken him to Clarkson Eye care for a second opinion and had Dr Baker. He informed that having children his age he would not recommend the surgery but that he could use glasses with prisms to help correct his vision. The surgery that Dr Unger was recommending for he is a very painful surgery. They would have to cut the muscles under his right eye and lower the eye. Then on the left side the would cut the muscles above the eye and move it up. Which is extremely painful the older they get. His orbit on his left eye is lower than his right eye. We are trying glasses for him and they should be in any day now. Each lens will have 3 prisms and the strength will be 8 to start with. Hopefully this will help him! And he will have no more headaches! We are praying and have our fingers crossed as well. he is already a power of prayer child. God has brought us through so many things with him. He is with us now as well:)

Now the sad thing is that this is not the only issue...

I thought I better get my daughters eyes checked again and make sure he was right about her eyes. Well in the office Dr Baker tested her and said she did not even need glasses that her eyes were 20/20 and 20/15. I can't believe that I had her wearing glasses and she didn't even need them. She had been telling me that she could see better without her glasses. But me thinking the Dr knows best and she needed to wear glasses I thought she was just messing with me. How sad that a Dr wants money more than helping children. Her eye sight could have been really messed up by this mistake. Don't get me wrong I understand that getting glasses is a part of the person being tested. They say which one they see better but to have to misdiagnosed children in one family is a little too much for my liking. My mom also had a bad experience with him as well. She now goes to Clarkson Eye Care and loves it. I want all my friend to know about this doctor. Please tell others, so that he doesn't misdiagnose someone you love.

Sorry for the long rant but I don't want ANYONE else going through this like we did.
Thanks for listening (reading)

I HAD THE DISTINCT PLEASURE IN BEING SEEN BY DR. ALICE, I HAD WONDERED WHY SHE WAS SO EASY TO GET IN TO SEE. SHE WAS NICE AND KNOWLEDGEABLE , BUT DECEIVING. SHE TOLD ME JUST TRY THE H D LENSES AND IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THEM I WILL CHANGE

The Dr. was good, the staff was terrible and everything (glasses) costs about double what you can find it online - it's been 2-weeks and I've only gotten half a phone call (called and said, "Hi I'm calling from Unger Eye Care...." then they hung up and never called me back). When I called them they said "yes, your sunglasses are ready" and when I said "what about my regular glasses" they said "did you have another pair? hold on... the eye technician isn't available, do you want me to have them call you back?"

Go here for the eye exam, that's fine, it will be about $85 but DO NOT BUY GLASSES HERE - do a quick google search. I could have bought my glasses with everything including shipping for what just the frames cost at this place...

Recently visited Unger Eye care, Dr. Tom is a very knowledegable and nice Doctor. The guy who does the glasses fitting and selling of the "extras" is not a very friendly person. He was rude and very condescending, he commented that my current glasses looked cheap, He indicated the the glare coating was required, he never gave me an itemized statement. After I called the next day to compain about him, the Office Manager said the glare coating was not required but an option. Sure is sad when we have good eye insurance and a jerk like this tries to upsale extras.

I should have listened to the other reviews posted on Insider Pages. I had heard that Unger Eyecare was overpriced, but I had new VSP vision insurance that was supposed to cover most of the costs. Wow- I have never ever paid so much for a vision exam and contact lenses. It is insane. They definitely try to sell you unnecessary services as well. Not only was I paying extra for the VSP insurance, but I paid over twice as much as I used to at my old doctor (who I really wish I could have gone to).

There is one male employee there who is absolutely awful. He has the worst personality and very snottily and casually told me my outrageous total without even itemizing the expenses and telling me what they were for. He seemed very annoyed that I was shocked by the price and that I wanted to know exactly what I was paying for. He didn't even provide me with an itemized receipt until I specifically requested it. He also did not schedule my follow-up appointment after the doctor instructed him to. I had to initiate the follow-up, which I wish I hadn't done. Furthermore, I was offered no trial contacts (which you should ALWAYS be offered to see if you like them) and left feeling incredibly over-charged and dissatisfied.

I will say that the women who work there are very friendly and great at what they do, but the guy completely ruins the experience for you- believe me.

The worst part is that I came back for a "follow-up" to an eye condition I had (which I knew was getting better). I had to take off work early and then had to wait 45 minutes for the doctor to get in and he didn't even apologize! I was livid. Then, he spent around 1.5 minutes with me and tells me my eyes "look better". Thanks, but I already knew that. Then, I had to pay a $40 "specialist co-pay" and another $60 for who knows what for a 1.5 minute useless visit that I should have avoided. I cannot believe what a money trap this place is. Everyone else was right. I should not have gone here and will not be returning. It's upsetting that a hometown practice takes advantage of it's customers.

The doctor was ok but very disrespectful of my time. I waited an hour. He didn't even show up to his own office until 40 minutes after my appointment time! My son went out back to go to the skate park, and texted me that he had just driven in. I've since learned from talking to other people that this is apparently widely known that he is late for everything and is never at his office when his own appointments begin. What arrogance! Yet the other day for my daughter's appointment, when we called to say we were running a little late due to the interstate construction right by their office, they said we'd have to reschedule. After spending half an hour to get there! Also -- I found them to be quite expensive. True, very nice people working for them and it is a thorough exam, but it's all geared to selling you. I asked our pediatrician about the "visual field" test which costs extra and is not covered by insurance. He said it's ridiculous to do that on a healthy child or even an adult with no vision problems, basically its just to pad their fees. He said the picture of the retina is more useful but still not worth it on a healthy child. I also googled the visual field test and now am really irritated that I was steered into this. If I could give them zero stars I would: +5 for the staff who is very nice and tries hard, and -5 for the people who run the place.

Horrible service! Went there for my sons glasses about 8 weeks and still no glasses. I called them about 2 weeks ago and they said they should be in any day. Then I stopped by there today and they said the order was lost and it would be another 6-8 weeks. This place is waaaayyyyy overpriced and they are very pushy with sales!

My husband and I both went here once. My husband wears glasses and I do not. We paid over $600 for his eye exam, a single pair of glasses and 6 months worth of disposable contacts. They talked him into paying for their anti-glare coating on his glasses and promised that the lenses wouldn't scratch. That lasted less than a week. His glasses turned out to be no better quality than what we had been getting at Wal-Mart. As for me, I have 20/20 vision but when I had my eye exam and they realized they were not going to be selling me any expensive corrective devices they looked visibly disappointed and asked me if they could at least show me some of their sunglasses. No thanks, I think I'll just go back to Wal-Mart.

My wife and I both see the Doctors Unger (this is a husband and wife practice) and have been incredibly impressed. We have both been outfitted with glasses through them and felt we were well cared for, and my wife actually has a small cataract that they are closely monitoring. We feel very comfortable in letting them know of any vision problems we might be experiencing. Their practice does seem technologically advanced, but I am happy to have the best equipment available to protect my family's eyesight.

Although the service was polite and the doctor seemed competent, my main impression of this office is that they have put together an expensive office (extra computerized equipment, flat screen TVs and monitors everywhere, more expensive than typical furnishings) and now they need to pay for it. They heavily promote vision therapy. I believe it's a legitimate therapy, but it's obviously a profit center, too. The not-covered-by-insurance fees are ridiculous, and the same treatment is available elsewhere at much lower cost.
