I really liked Valley Birth Place up until my actual birth, when my contractions got pretty bad and my husband called to say I was ready and we were told that we would have to go to the hospital because there was no nurse on call that weekend. It was pretty devastating because I had planned a natural water birth and my main pain coping technique was unexpectedly taken away from me, as well as the rest of my birth plan. Not what you want to hear when you are in labor and scared. No one ever mentioned to us that Valley Birth Place doesn't have nurses on call every day. I'm not willing to risk having that occur again and will be going with Bryn Mawr Birth Center for my next child because they are staffed 24/7 with a nurse.

Barbara and the staff at Valley Birthplace were both welcoming and kind from the moment I met them. I have been very pleased with the personalized care and attention I have received. She always makes sure to asnwer all of my questions and really get to know me and the birth I desire for my child. Barbara does an excellent job of keeping me informed of all the aspects of prenatal care and really is concerned with my well being. Sometimes the wait can be a little long on a full day, but it is worth it for the care you receive. I wouldn't hesitate to reccommend Barbara for maternity care to friends and family. Abby, the administrative assistant is also wonderful, friendly, and very efficient with paperwork and all of the logistics.

Bad experience. My husband didn't like this place from the beginning but I heard good things about midwifes (in general, not about Mellisa and Barbara) and I wanted to give them a try. I will regret it for the rest of my life. During pregnancy, the service was relatively ok, but after birth...it was awful. I called for help a few days after birth (high blood pressure) and Barbara was horrible..she made me cry on the phone. I felt I was left alone after birth with no help (although in the beginning they said that they will care for you). I started with a normal pregnancy and I ended up being high risk (not their fault) but they were incapable of recognizing the signs (although now, after doing some research, I know there were lots of signs). How would you know that you will have a high risk pregnancy at the end? That's why they are there and in my case they failed miserably. I am pregnant again and I go to Abington and I am happy with the service

I went to Valley Birthplace for my second pregnancy. I was trying for a VBAC and Barbara had privleges at Chestnut Hill Hopsital. She has a wealth of knowledge about pregnancy and birth and I comfortable with her. The wait was always long, I always gave myself about 3 hours from the time I left my house until I got home, because she spends a lot of time with each woman. It was a bit difficult with toddler, but she has toys for them to play with.

I had went to VBP for my gyn care after my son was born and it was fine. Then, when I was prgnant with my third, I had to transfer my care because the hospital wouldn't let me VBA2C.

I would recommend VBP for women looking for a midwife, although they tend spread themselves thin. I saw both Barbara and Melicia and I like them both.

Valley Birthplace is a birth center owned and operated by Barbara D'Amato. She is a midwife with more than 25 years experience. She shares her practice with another midwife, Melicia, who I have heard nothing but great things about, but have no personal experience. They do routine gynelogical care, prental care and births at home, the birth center or the hospital.

I saw Barbara for well woman care for 8 years. I also saw her for prenatal care and the birth of my son. She was working with another midwife, Lauren Hodges, when I had my son. Lauren was/is an amazing midwife who will be missed (she moved).

Barbara has loads of experience under her belt and quite a list of credentials (I believe she has a Masters in biochemical engineering in addition to her degrees in nursing and midwifery). She is a strong supporter of women and their right to choose the best care for themselves and their babies.

The birth center is very nice. There are exam rooms on one floor and two birthing rooms on the second floors. The birthing rooms are very nice and homey, with real beds (not hospital beds), a jacuzzi and a nice kitchen. You are allowed to have as many people as you want at the birth - unlike hospitals. They offers childbirth classes and the occasional mommy and me classes. They also provide information for women needing counseling, lactation support, doulas, alternative care providers etc.

The receptionist, Abby, is also very nice. It was always easy to schedule an appointment. Wait time can be a little long. They take 45 minutes to an hour with their exams as they take the time to get to know you and address all of your issues and questions, which is typical of midwives in general.

My only gripe is that she spreads herself too thin. This is common with midwives as the demand is high and midwives are few and far between lately. My only disappointment was with my birth - which is a big disappointment. I was supposed to give birth at the birth center. As I was walking out the door to head to the birth center, I was called and told they couldn't use the center (something about support staff not being available and Barbara being off for the night). I had to go to the hospital. I was still attended by my midwife, Lauren, who was very supportive and did her best to make my hospital birth as close to a birth center birth as possible. Still, it had a lasting effect on me. I still went for my postpartum care and newborn screenings (they can do them up to 3 months) and was satisfied.

Despite my one issue I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
