My name is Scott Utley. I have been HIV+ since 1980. I have literally have more hands-on experience with HIV than many doctors do today. I have been around the block a couple of times. My first doctors were the brilliant eccentric Dr. Scolaro & Dr Tom Mcgee. 1986 I have hashed it out numerous times with most of the great doctors of our day. This guy, Dr McDonough, is without doubt among the greats for many reasons, most notably his uncanny ability to see through the XXXX and nail each issue right on the head. I give him, and his office, 100% TOP RATINGS.

Service used to be impeccable years ago when the business was at it's peak.

However, over the past few years, the wait time to see Dr. McDonough, and even Will - the physicians assistant - is just inconsiderate and disrespectful of their clients time.

Today I waited for almost 2 hours from when I walked in till when I walked out since no doctor was available. I asked for my refund and told them I'm not coming back. Will came out to apologize but enough is enough. This is not the first time this has happened - in fact, this has been an on-going occurrence for the past few years - I stayed because I have history with this practice and they HAVE provided great service, but something has changed with their business/client service.

The sad thing is, its like they don't even care or realize this is a problem. I rarely see more than 2 - 3 patients in this office at any given time.. and most of them are in the waiting room... so I can't understand what Dr. McDonough and Will are so busy with when they're all just hanging around the office.

The staff, while nice and friendly, are unprofessional and spend their time socializing, watching videos, listening to music and gossiping.

I was flat out told by one of the staff members that most patients accept that Dr. McDonough will run late, so they purposely show up 30 minutes past their set appointment to meet him on 'his schedule'. I'm sorry, but I work a full time job and have deadlines and responsibilities to manager - not take half a day off to talk to him for 15 to 20 minutes over some random issue.

This place is gross!! Dr. Mcdonough is a rude nasty bitter old man. He has NO respect for anybody. He's a greedy over-prescribing fear indusing pervert.

AVOID THIS DIRTY FACILITY AT ALL COST!! YOU'RE BETTER OFF GOING TO A CLINIC.

never have i experienced such a selfish degrading Dr. in my life. he treats his patients and his staff with such hatred. Such a sad bitter old man. If he wasn't so worried about saving a couple pennies he would actually hire a full staff, instead of having his tricks and his mother working for him. i have been seeing him for way too many years and i finally had enough!! I was coughing up blood, almost fainting in his office. i had to rush myself to the emergency room because i was not seen in the 5 hours that i had been waiting in his office. I have never seen so many eyes rolled by patients waiting and i have never seen such a high staff turn over. avoid this Dr. at all costs.

Plan to go through the medical mill and take a number. You will wait over an hour and be sitting in a room for another half an hour when you see him. This place is here to make money and run as many tests as possible and load you up with prescriptions

After seeing two other HIV specialists, a buddy of mine recommended seeing Dr. McDonough, you see the Dr. saved his life, also HIV+ he was dying of cancer, the Dr. saw him and treated him immediately, and 5 years later, my buddy is still here.
He calls him a miracle worker..and so do I, after going to him after being unsatisfied with my then Dr. and the Dr. before....Yes, go see Dr. McDonough...life is not always easy, but there is hope.

he's a pompous but charming character whose practice is on autopilot, and i question whether every 5-star review on here is authentic and in fact, it's suspicious that hardly anyone is reviewing in the 3 or 4 star areas - just 1 or 5. he put me with one of his many "other professionals" -- one in a long line of many, apparently -- who told me if i didn't do exactly as i was told (by him and dr. mcdonough) that i would be dead in 3 years. yes, that's right. dead. d-e-a-d. dead.

not one to fool around, i got a second opinion. that doctor told me that i'll probably outlive both him and dr. mcdonough, based on my labs and healthy lifestyle.

since then, more than a few friends of mine have told me that DR. MCDONOUGH IS KNOWN FOR "CHURNING" PATIENTS, and that using fear is the primary device churners use to keep you in their office so that they can maximize billings to your insurance company. i had no idea (about churning, and that i was so naive that doctors actually do things like this).

so, you may not be told that you'll die, as i was, but if you're told you need this test and that test, and you need to come in every 90 days or more, i'd get a second opinion - as i did - right away.

Dr. McDonough aka Vista Medical Partners is after one thing --- $$$$$$$$$--------Lab test after unnecessary Lab test---excessive prescriptions---multiple misdiagnoses----a revolving array of Physician's Assistants who would be better suited working at Disneyland ---- Plan to set aside a good part of your day for a simple visit ---- and I hope you're not dying--- it'll be a 2 hour wait---Shameful excuse for a medical practice!

Dr. McDonough is an intelligent and caring doctor, but his office is a disorganized disaster. Everyone there looks like they are running around and unable to sit down and focus on anything. His charming but inexperienced PA interprets lab results and gets prescriptions rubber-stamped that are incorrect. His office coordinator is very nice lady but utterly incompetent, unable to follow up on any substantive matters. His male nurse/assistant says he is overworked and unable to perform his duties. Waits typically exceed an hour, sometimes two. A physical somehow turns into 3 or even 4 office visits. It is utterly impossible to communicate via telephone because no one can follow up -- everyone feels too overwhelmed and busy. I love Dr. McDonough, but after several years dealing with this madness, I have sadly decided to leave.

I only wish we had read these reviews before wasting time with Vista Medical Partners. While my impression remains that Dr. McDonough is a remarkable physician, you will hardly see him beyond the first visit. And there will be many visits for things that shouldn't require a visit. The other reviews that note the high number of lab tests are true. And when I went there for a minor injury, the office manager came into the exam room to offer me Botox -- which I do not need.
This practice relies dangerously on PAs (Physician Assistants), Contrary to state rules, they cannot always reach the actual doctor, And they are inexperienced. In our case, a drug was prescribed that was contraindicated. The PA, when told this the next day, said to take it anyway and go to an emergency room if there is a negative reaction. Please.
When we tried to reach the doctor to discuss the need for another medication instead, he would never return the calls. We could only speak with the PA, who had no interest in us calling his mistake to the attention of the doctor. Instead, we got a letter two days later telling us we were being dropped as patients -- without ever being able to talk to the doctor. He must have NO IDEA. Very dangerous.
The state medical board will soon know, however.
We did eventually have to go to an emergency room, where we got treatment that cured the problem.
Beware of this scam.

Dear Dr. McDonough:

I have been a patient at your offices for close to five years, initially with Dr Reddi and then, more recently with you. During my time with Dr. Reddi, I was extraordinarily impressed with your office??s responsiveness, attention to detail and respect for its?? patients. More recently, while I have been extremely impressed with your attentiveness as a doctor, I have been distressed by the very distinct ways in which your office now treats clients.

On the most basic level, it has frequently appeared that your office is simply concerned with getting patients in for billable hours. On any number of occasions, after having simple blood work done, I have been required to book an appointment for results that could have been administered in a two minute phone call. Additionally, on recent visits, you??ve added a nurse, not someone I would have chosen to share personal information with, who handles the bulk of your work for you ?? including, often times, relaying the results, etc.

As I am sure by now you are aware, I have had more recent frustrations with what I perceive as a complete lack of communication, bordering on incompetence on the part of your office support staff. Recently, I called to have an existing prescription refilled. I spoke with Victoria on five different occasions, leaving a message with all my information and requesting a call back, none came nor was the prescription refilled. Additionally, I had my pharmacy fax over a request to have the prescription refilled. No response. Out of frustration, I asked to speak with office manager Elaine. I explained my situation and let her know I was as upset about the prescription not being filled as I was about the complete lack of response to my numerous messages.

She explained you have an office policy not to refill prescriptions if a patient has not been in for over a year. My last visit with you was in May, 2009 ?? three months from now. I explained that as a healthy individual with no history at all of any illness, it seems completely unnecessary that I should need to come in for an office visit more than once a year, simply for the purpose of renewing a prescription and that, as indicated above, I felt this was one of many recent events where I was left with the distinct impression your office was more concerned with finding a reason to bill patients than actually addressing their needs.

We ended the call with her promising to relay my message to you and that, one way or another, she would be back in touch to let me know the outcome by the end of the day. Two days passed with no return call until I had to track her down again. At this time, she simply repeated the information stated earlier, completely ignoring the core points of my call: 1) to receive an explanation of why it should be necessary for me to visit your offices more than once a year 2) why all my messages had gone unanswered and 3) my desire to make you personally aware of all of these things.

She again promised to investigate the situation and return my call. She did not. I called her again and she told me Oscar had phoned me and left a message ?? a fact which is simply untrue. When I expressed my frustration at this complete lack of communication she claims I raised my voice ?? which I did not, but which would by this point surely be understandable ?? and then hung up on me.

This morning, having left word for you yet again with Victoria with no reply ?? I called your offices for the purpose of having my records transferred to a new doctor and hopefully having the chance to speak with you and let you know why I had made such a decision. It was at this point that Elaine let me know I should have received a letter (which both laughably and ironically, I did not) that you had dismissed me from your practices.

I am at a complete loss to understand how you can respect yourself as a physician who claims to care for his patients without so much as taking the time to return a phone call to hear my very real concerns about the very real communication problems that exist in your offices.

I suppose there??s enough fat on the insurance log for you to make a generous living off of people in need, regardless of the lack of respect with which you ?? and your office staff -choose to treat them. For my part, I find that nothing short of offensive and truly shameful.

My partner and I began seeing Dr. McDonough in 2005 always finding him to be knowledgeable and clever especially regarding HIV and associated conditions. However his practice was almost always a long frustrating ordeal which required time and engery always better needed elsewhere. Appointment wait times under 45 min are rare - and typically the wait would be 1-2 hours from your scheduled time to actually seeing the Dr.
If you have sticky insurance be prepared for some issues as he typically orders massive amounts of lab tests and getting RX's refilled is a multiple day process of phone calls and forms faxed.
If you are hospitalized, you wont see him much and dealing with immediate needs often take a couple days (like getting pain management procedures in place) a very long time when your laying in a hospital bed.
Also, in spite of a 20 year history of Xanex use without ever having an addition issue to it - every time I ask to refill the RX his office tells me "no" followed by several days of unnecessary and exhausting phone sessions to have it re-written again.
I am a Professional in Entertainment and am committed to maintaining my health but don't have the time or patience to spend going to Vista Medical.

Infected in 1990, I faced so many, many challenges with this disease. I've had to dedicate my life to my health and Dr. Mcdonough has seen me throw EVER step of the way. I've followed him from three different offices because no one individual has ever shown me more compassion, understanding and just such excellence in the field of medicine. I was one of dr. Mcdonoughs' first female patients and we faced much uncharted territory together. But that never stopped Dr. Mcdonough from working endless hours on my problems, Dr. McDonough is constantly flying all over the world to continually learn about this evolving disease. On more then one occasion, dr. Mcdonough conferred at these world summits with medical leaders on My case. He Literally brought the world to my door. He is an amazing doctor (and his adrenaline - you Cannot believe how much this man can accomplish in just one day). He has been one of the greatest blessings in my life.

He is an amazing doctor (and his adrenaline - you Cannot believe how much this man can accomplish in just one day). He has been one of the greatest blessings in my life.

I can't say enough about Dr McDonough or his staff at Vista Medical. I've been his patient for over five years now and have sent both friends and family to him. He is the most intelligent doctor I have come across in a long time and I've seen many with my health problems. Dr McDonough is not the type of person to run in and out of the room with out getting to the source of the problem. I'm not sure what's wrong with the other reviewer but I've always had to wait a little to see the best doctors and he's worth it. I wouldn't have the quality of life I have without him. Thank you Dr McDonough!

Pros: Excellent care, helpfully staff, beautiful office, great doctor!

Cons: None

When I first started coming to the doctor everything was great, but as time went on, the service became completely shoddy. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone. First of all, they call you in for everything. They bill your insurance. They make you wait for over an hour in the waiting room. I know people that have had examinations without using rubber gloves while touching genatalia which frankly is just gross considering the amount of contaminants they doctor probably comes into contact with. I have gone in and actually NOT seen the doctor because the wait times and they haven't refunded my copay even though the doctor didn't see me. David McDonogh is a racket. STAY AWAY. STAY FAR AWAY

I've been seeing Dr. McDonough for the past 2 or 3 years and I can't say enough about the good doctor. He has taken great care of me. He has taught much better eating habits. I now have control of my asthma, my cholesterol is at it's lowest in many years. He's great. I read some of the negative reviews and I'm really sorry those people haven't found him to be a magnificent source of knowledge. When he doesn't have the answer for what ever reason...he doesn't stop until he gets it. Oh sure sometimes I have to wait a couple of hours but my theory is if he's spending that much time with the patient before, it shows me that he will take the same amount of time with me. That proves to me that he cares about all of his patients. He only has 2 hands, 2 legs and a gigantic heart. So be patient you patients. He'll get to you and you will reap the benefits.

Dr. McDonough is an excellent internist. He is very thorough, when it comes to finding out what ails you. He was able to locate issues that could have been detrimental to my health, but with his persistence and follow through, saved me and my kids from an unnecessary trauma down the road leading us to unforeseen territory, but due to his professional insight. He diagnosed (Factor V Laden Mutation) a blood clotting disease, that effected me and some of my children, we're grateful for his knowledge on such a disease that effects many unexpectedly. Thanks Doc

Dr. David McDonough is a doctor that cares. He goes the extra mile to make sure his patients are cared for properly. He keep them informed with the lastest medical technology and shows them how to do preventive care. Thank you so much, Dr. McDonough.

Why? because Dr. David McDonough talks to me in words that I as a patient can understand. He takes time with me, He does extensive research on my condition and is able to put me at ease. Dr. McDonough leaves no stone unturned with his patients. If I have to wait to see him it's well worth the wait. I have referred friends and relatives to him because I trust his knowledge and his integrity. I respect him. I also have the utmost respect for his front and back office staff. The front staff members are intelligent, polite, courteous, well groomed and handle me and my information with privacy. The back office staff members make every effort to put me at ease while preparing me for the doctor., i.e., blood pressure, temperature, blood draw, etc. I am grateful that I've found an internist that I have full confidence in. Plus living in Beverly Hills allows me to be just a few minutes away when I need to see my doctor. If you're looking for a guy who takes pride in his work and respects his patients...look no further. Dr. McDonough is right there on Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills.

Dr. McDonough is worth the wait. He takes the time to analyze what you feel and describe as a patient and then to order the necessary labs to confirm his initial diagnosis and, may I say that in all the years that I have been in his care he has never been wrong. He is among the very best diagnosticians.

He treats medicine as a science and an art which I am truly thankful for. His recommended therapies are not strictly formulaic. They are in the forefront of the field. Dr. McDonough has excellent credentials and experience. He is recognized globally among his peers for his expertise.

I can not say enough about the care which you will receive at this practice. There is no better time invested. I would travel great distances (and have) to be under his care.

It's funny reading some of these reviews, doctor McDonough has been my doctor for over 10 years. Sure the practice is busy, I've waited for an hour or two but he's the best! Not someone who rushes in and sums up your illness in 5 minutes and runs out. When he's finished taking care of you, you know you are getting the best care possible. I've referred about 20 friends and family over the years and they are still thanking me to this day. I've been ill most of my life and have had many doctors but none as good as this man.

McDonough is a caring, knowledgeable and empathetic doctor, but the office experience can be a nightmare.

McDonough typically runs 1-2 hours late for appointments - very inconsiderate of his patients' time. Office seems disorganized and staff turnover is high.

Receptionist is too busy chatting to attend to patients or answer the phone. Files are a mess.

Doctor orders lots of lab work (is it all really necessary?) and tends to push his podiatrist (and therapist and trainer, etc.) on you. Don't fall for the orthodics, which are a waste of time and money.

This practice is a scam. You can make and appointment to see someone you most likely will not because a new doctor will first check you in, and then offer yo to see who you wanted to in the first place, that is, on a second appointment, which of course will also be approximately 1 1/2 hr behind schedule. Save yourself from bringing your current records and lab tests, everything will be re-done no matter you had it done the day before, and then you'll be stung by bills you never saw throughout your whole medical life. All kinds of scare tactcs will be deployed to make you accept further unnecessary testing, whether you need it or not, In my case I didnt need it.
Terrible experience.

I have been a patient of Dr McDonough for 10 years now and he has turned my life around. He is caring and extremely knowledgeable and never talks down to you but teaches you all he knows about your illness. If it wasn't for him I'm sure the quality of my life would be drastically worse. I can't thank him enough for his time and energies he has given me.
