Dutton's Books & Prints
This is a cool little bookstore. I always go here to support the private businesses over the big corporations. They offer those hard to find, out of print books, through special order or by in stock! They have a great selection of quirky eclectic greeting cards with cool art. It is an art store too. They have prints of many movie one sheets and old posters. I highly recommend this place. It is a bit old and small, but it gives you that feeling of unique sophistication and friendliness when you step in the door! Check it out, it's right next too Popeye.
PROS:
CONS: ARRAY(0x8991258)
Grove Pacific Theatres
This place is cush. I think the reconstruction of an old theatre house is too cool. It makes me want to join munch celluloid and live in the 40's. The ticket prices are all a standard fat 14 bucks? I'd say hold off unless you are seeing something worth that expense. The Grove here has many other shops and places to go while you wait to see a movie.
Hollywood Video
This video store has the best fully stocked new releases. You will never be upset if they don't have what you want, because there are lots to choose from. They offer a wide variety of video games for X-box including the X-box rental too. I would like to see them wipe off their late fees like Netflix, so this is a downside, however the location is great because it's right off of Western Avenue, with convenient parking.
Borders Books & Music
Borders really makes it convenient to browse before you buy. The atmosphere is chill and sedate, so go get your coffee or vanilla latte and prepare to check out all the huge dichotomy of books and music cds, or dvds. I truely like this place over barnes and noble for some reason. They have a great selection of art books and screenplays here are galore. You won't feel like you wasted your time when you go here to have fun. The staff is nice enough to look up titles for you and you can also look on their kiosks and do your own investigating.
Michaels Stores
This is the chain of all art stores, when you are looking to do any kind of project. You can find old lady bric-a-brac to cool stained glass window supplies. The fact that they have a 50 percent coupon makes it worth it just to come here for a single item. I would suggest to check out their candle making kits. Totally sweet that they frame posters and art with a reasonable price. I have to be pulled out of here evertime I come in to mosey around!
Bob Hope Airport
I always try to book a ticket here! It is conveniently located in the Valley and not bogged down by crazy taxi drivers and dirty shuttle buses. The place to book your ticket is here if you are traveling by Southwest, etc. I would suggest to check with your travel agent to see about actually getting your ticket here, at this airport. One of my only chances to get in and to get out when picking someone up to. They are flying out of Arizona usually and that's their best bet.
Arclight Movie Theater
Alright, someone else who cares about bleeping cellphones and rude customers. They will give you 100 percent customer satisfaction. No bad projection, it's controlled by a competent staff. The only one other than Sherman Oaks Galleria which has met my satisfaction. They introduce the show and make you feel like you're being treated with class. There's a resturaunt there to eat before a show! Famous amoeba music record store is outside across the street to check out if you want any chill time afterwards.
Amoeba Music
I know there are other reviews like this, so I won't stress the music. The main thing to mention is that they have many good film titles here. You can find excellent Lumiere old silent films that are released on DVD. Also it's right next to the cinerama dome, so you can hit up two birds with one stone. Kinda pricey for a Dvd, so it's kinda worth the atmosphere, only if you want to immerse yourself in the emo-punk crowd.
Star Of India Tandoori Rstrnt
The best tandoori chicken is here. I always like to try the mikka tika and the saffron rice, totally yum. The thing to do is to park in the back alley and go through the back. You will see a guy named "Bob" tell him that his friends have sent you there and he is so nice he even offered me a complimentary courtesy beer, when I was picking up food. They are vary gracious when you dine with them, and afterwards you can bum Melrose Ave.
The Comedy Store
A place for underground entertainment. You will find that there are like 4 rooms that offer different comedy styles with different audiences listening to different comedy acts on different stages. One is the original room that can be quite hilariously lewd with rated R humor. Then there are other rooms that offer family content. Don't go into the upstairs, unless you want to be sniped by a comedian and pulls you up on stage. The price is probably worth it if you can find cheap parking. Make sure to ask them who's headlining that night. Stay late for the crazier acts and material, don't worry each act is better as the night goes on.
PROS:
CONS: 2 drink minimum and parking is a pain
