It's sad in a way to see what has happened to Florey's Book Co. since it has moved to it's new location. This store has been around for over 30 years, and in it's original 2 locations was a really great active part of the Pacifica community, offering lots of book events and activities in addition to an outstanding collection of books. It's been in the tiny new location for a couple of years now and the stock of books is drastically reduced. I find it depressing to go in there now especially since it ishard to browse because the salesman pounces on you as soon as you walk in the door and tries to push you into ordering, the book you came in for, which they didn't have in stock. At least it is still there. Also it now has some used books which is very nice.
This is one of the nicer neighborhood type hardware stores I have been to. It's friendly without decending into kitchness, In other words it's still a hardware store. Right when you come in the door they have a soda machine and complimentary coffee, which I really appriciate, as I usually end up going in there on a Saturday morning. In addition to the usual supply of hardware and tools, they offer a good selection of lumber and plants for landscaping, they also have some bulk seeds for sale, which you can measure out of a bin. The sales people are young enthusiastic and refreshingly helpful, also there is about an equal ratio of men to women. It's a good one stop hardware store for Saturday projects.
This Kragens, is one of the better ones around. It is medium sized and usually has the part in stock that I want. The staff is very knowlegeable friendly and helpful and seem to be mainly made up of students from the nearby Skyline College Automotive program. The other good thing about it is that a few miles down the same road is another bigger Kragens, so if the first store doesn't have the part I need, then the second store usually will.
This is one of the worst Kragens I have ever visited. Usually the sales people at Kragens are pretty knowlegeable, but here although they are very friendly, they are extermly inept. Several times I have called ahead to confirm that they have an item in stock and then when I show up within the same day, they don't have it anymore. Also although the store is on the small side they have trouble finding anything without looking it up in the computer and then coming back to the counter with the wrong part several times before they get it right.
I have never had a pleasent experience or found what I came into buy in this place. The noise level of the canned music in this bookstore is way too loud. That and the loudness of the staff as they help people find books, makes it difficult to concentrate, when you are trying to read. Also, the long lines and lack of selection are not pluses. The chairs around the room for customers to sit and read in are a good idea but they happen to be situated right near the windows which give off such a cold draft, that even if you could concentrate, you would freeze while trying to read.
Although the hardware sold here is pricey and touristy, and the stock is limited, the paint department is the greatest. After suffering through the lines and ineptitude at Home Depot, I decided to try my local hardware store, and there I discovered the Paint Wizard. The Paint Wizard can match any color and stain and mix it right there, he will spend a lot of time to get the color right and actually knows what he is doing because he has many years of experience and has actually taken courses in paint mixing. He also gives great advice on which stains and paints to use for which purpose.
The dentist that works in the little side room at the Center for Cosmetic Dentistry is a real jewel. The dentist is the best dentist I have ever gone to. She spends a lot of time on you and is very gentle and does the job right. I have had an initial deep cleaning which took 4 hours and was split into 2 days and really didn't hurt vey much, compared to my previous dentist whom I now refer to as "the butcher". I have also been very happy with the cleanings I have recieved and with the several fillings, none of which have given me any trouble after several years. The front desk person is also very helpful and friendly and I love the decor which is a wide open warehouse style decorated with large leafy trees and plants. At this office, I don't feel as if I am being shut into a tiny torture chamber like in most dental offices. Beware of the head orthodontist that also works there though, he is rude and money-hungery and I wouldn't go to him again.
Fred's Garage specializes in Volkswagon Repair. They are fast, friendly and knowlegeable. Also they are right off of 101 and conveniently located within walking distance of the Redwood City Cal Train.I left my '71 bug convertible there for front end work and picked it up fixed, the next day. While they may be a bit expensive, compared to doing it yourself, they do know what they are doing and have the time to explain it to you. They gave me a complete breakdown of each thing I needed done and how much each would cost and how urgent each was. I was then able to pick and choose which job's I wanted done. Their repair yard is stuffed with VW's, many of them pre-'79, in various stages of repair, dribbling out onto the street, which gives the garage a friendly feel. Also they take the time to check and recheck your car to make sure everything is really working.I will definitely bring my car there again.
