I bought four BF Goodrich Riken Raptor tires after pricing them elsewhere. Hands down, this place beat the competition for pricing. Out the door and with taxes, I paid $366.38. I was quoted $408 and up at other places. They do require a deposit to order the tires, as they may not have what you need immediately in stock. The good news is that the tires are at the shop the next day. Efram and his staff explain all procedures from balancing to alignment, and while they offer additional warranties, you get the best pricing deal by going with the basics. For an additional $13 per tires you can get full warranty replacement, but I blew that off. They were pretty quick too, as they had all tires up ready to roll in 30 minutes.
I had a pair of kid leather high heels that required a new half sole, heel tips and a shine. The price quoted was $39.95!!! For that, I could buy two pairs of new shoes at DSW. They are absolutely nuts. Go elsewhere.
Though this is not the best wine bar in the area, it does provide an affordable treat during happy hour (4-7) for wine and appetizers. I am particularly fond of the margherita pizza ($6), or the pita and olive tapanade spread, or the hummus and bread. Very yummy.
Unfortunately, the food is better than the wine offered. The selection doesn't change. Pity. Some of the better offerings are the Syrahs and Cabs on hand. Try the McManus or the Scott. Anyway, it is a good place to kill an hour as you wait for your movie at the nearby AMC Theatre to come up. Oh, and if you're looking for the best wine bar, go to Colorado Wine Co. in Eagle Rock.
PROS: good appetizers, affordable happy hour
CONS: poor wine selection that doesn't change
I first found this place a year ago went I wanted to find a Tillandsia plant for my indoor desk fountain. Their selection is great and the prices very affordable. You can pick up some types as cheaply as $5 each or go for rarer specimens at $45 or $120. Parking is onsite, plenty to be had. Besides tillandsia, they had bromileads and other tropical plants. Definely a place to survey to see all that's out there before buying.
As for the web, when I wrote this review (August 2006), their shopping cart was not working properly. Only some of the items could be added into the cart, while others couldn't be added. I have written them about this, so we'll see if this gets fixed. As for over-the-phone service, I got the impression they just wanted to get off the phone. When I asked for info on the tax they charged for their items, they wagered a guess. I had to ask them to verify it since I was sending in an order by mail. Only then did the clerk confirm the sales tax. Not a very customer-oriented staff.
PROS: great selection of tillandsia and bromileads, onsite parking, affordable
CONS: customer service not so helpful
This is my favorite wine tasting spot bar none. The post-modern lounge where the tastings are held is comfortable and slightly darkened as if beckoning a David Lynchian crowd. My favorite time to visit is Sunday afternoon when tastings are $10 for a full flight of 4 or 5 wines, accompanied by Auntie Em's munchies (cheeses, bread, fruit, nuts, the whole she-bang). Of course, if a bigger gathering is your thing, then come on Friday or Saturday evenings when the locals come out in force. Street parking is easy.
You can find gems of affordable reach (under $10) or upper scale selections of distinguished merit. It's all there, just bring your tongue and relax. I have brought friends and they love the place. I have gone stag and met new pals. It is an oasis where learning and lounging co-mingle in celebration of wine. Cheers!
PROS: great wines, nice owners, down-to-earth crowd, good food, hip lounge
Avo needs to change the name of the shop to "best damn mechanic, honesty free of charge". I took my Lexus there on 7/31/06 to replace the main rear engine seal and the radiator fan hose. This meant removing the chassis, so I knew it would be pricey (the dealer quoted me $1700 min.). Avo not only beats the price, but when he checks out the parts the dealer cited, he exposes the fact that a cheaper part was actually required. That alone saved me $200. The whole repair cost $991 under Avo's watchful care. He did it in two days and that was because he had to order the cheaper part.
By the way, his customer service is great. When he called the rental car company to pick me up, they said they'd be over in 10 minutes. This prompted him to say "I'll drive you over myself", which meant I wouldn't be late for work. Nice. The extra touch was much appreciated.
When I first called Avo for a price quote, it was a month before I made it over to his place to get it done. He still had the quote on his computer with the pricing he originally offered. Again, he went the extra mile of documenting prices and backing them up. His thoroughness came through in the workmanship too. The car runs great after he made the repairs. He is the master of auto repair.
PROS: affordable, efficient, honest, helpful
CONS: hard to find--it is actually on Greenwood, south of Walnut
As always the selection and quality of the food at Beco is tops. What doesn't always deliver is the service from the managerial staff, where on two prior occasions a year apart, I has the unfortunate experience of trying to get a large party squared away. We booked months in advance and still were not properly accomodated in getting the room we asked. IT wasn't as though we enlarged or reduced our group beforehand. We said how many we had and asked accordingly for a particular room whoch wasn't otherwise reserved. On both occasions, the management ended up haplessly putting something together in a patchwork fashion, but not what we had wanted. Very unprofessional.
Parking is attended by a valet, but that just seems to be a money-maker, as the parking lot is right next to the restaurant, so there's really no parking involved by the valet. Totally absurd.
PROS: great food, good waiters
CONS: valet parking charge; ambiguous managerial reservations
Thankfully, they've got plenty of parking, so you can always get there and not have to run around for days for an open spot. The place has a spacious quality to it, filled with all the books and magazines you'd want. Plus, there's a music selection that's pretty fair. My favorite part is the card, calandar, and stationery section. Good diversity of products there. If you are in the mood, they have a cafe. Coffee is fair, but not exactly premium.
PROS: stationery section, free parking, good book selection
CONS: coffee at cafe could be better
The place is incredibly small, but quaint. The proprietor very solicitous. You get discounts for kids who buy books, so it promotes book purchasing. If you want paperback mysteries or romances, they've got them up the wah-wah. The best part is that they have hardback versions of some top sellers being offered for a song. If you want to find some unexpected gems, give it a visit. Then go next door and enjoy your prize with pizza from Shakey's.
PROS: parking, help from owner
CONS: very small shop, no seating area
If you never want to be disappointed and you want to spend as little as possible on a great meal, go to Casa Playa. It's on Catalina in Redondo Beach and it's a small little hole in the wall, but their followers are loyal amd with good reason. Speaking just for me, I love their carnitas soft tacos. I became so addicted, I was stupidly ignoring the rest of the menu. Truly, it was almost Pavlovian. If you get the lunch special (2 tacos, with rice, beans, and drink it comes to $5.40) Anyway, their tortilla soup is bountiful and savory. Their vegetarian burrito is incredibly satisfying and I am a meat-eater. That should tell ya something. It's all good.
Service is lickety -split fast. The folks at the counter are very nice. You can sit inside or out. Outside is best so you people watch and folks stroll by. Close enough to the beach to be able to take your food to go and sit on the beach for a good view and meal.
Plenty of street metered parking (25 cents for 30 minutes). Open from 10am to 10pm weekdays and until 11pm on weekends.
PROS: great food, great price, quick service, near beach
