Apple Store
This is the ultimate spot to find all your favorite Apple gadgets and software. You can test drive all the latest toys, or ask questions about troubles with your own computer. They don't have the best prices in town. But, it's a great place to go when you want to see what's new from Apple. They'll always have the latest releases. And their smart staff can answer any questions you have at their "Genius Bar". For actual purchases though, you might better off using mail order Mac stores.
Not A Number
This is a very cool little store at the top of Queen Anne Hill. They're almost a miniature Archie McPhee. They have a great selection of stickers and signs for all your peace marches or protests. They have tons of cards and gifts; toys, gadgets, and other fun stuff. I bought something called "cat butt gum" for a friend who is a feline fanatic. The owner of the place is very nice, she even offers candy to her customers.
Urban Outfitters
I'd rather spend my dollars on blue businesses. So, I won't be shopping at UO anymore. Most of their political donations go to conservative organizations. And the items in their stores can be found at other places. Their prices are too expensive. And the parking along Broadway is terrible. So, I can not recommend this place to anyone.
PROS:
CONS: expensive
Third Place Books
Their name says it all. This is a great 'third place.' They have a fireplace with lots of comfortable seating; a great bakery cafe with good things to eat. And, they even have free WiFi access so you can bring your computer and do some work. Oh, and they also happen to have a great selection of books- used and new. Great prices. Friendly staff. And, it's in a great location; very convenient to the neighborhood. The other branch in Lake Forest Park is even bigger and better.
PROS: WiFi, fireplace, open mic night
CONS:
Sunset Bowl
The sunset is a great place to bowl! EVERYTHING should be open 24 hours! Too bad the grill closes early. Get your grilled cheese order in fast because the ol' cook behind the counter quits cooking about 30 minutes before the diner closes. Sunset also has free WiFi! a new feature; and a great addition. They also have the coolest pin-shaped beer bottles you've ever seen.
PROS: open 24 hours, karaoke, good prices, coupons on their web site. Free parking. Convenient to Ballard bars, restaurants.
CONS: Ornery wait staff in the diner. Poorly designed web site.
Artist & Craftsman Supply
This is the art supply megastore! They have anything and everything for artists of all types. I'm there several times a month. They have a huge selection of canvases, paints and brushes. But, they also have all types of materials for more obscure artistic pursuits. From papermaking to linoleum block carving. You'll also find a great selection of art papers, cards, pens, pencils, and more! The staff is very friendly and helpful. They even have a canine-American staffer who sometimes works behind the counter.
Ballard Camera
Ballard camera offers just about everything for the amateur or professional photographer. They have 1 hour photo service for prints or slides. Their expert staff is very helpful when it comes to tips and suggestions about photography in general. If they don't have something, they can suggest another place that might have it. They also have lots of scrapbooking supplies for crafters.
PROS:
CONS: closed on Sundays
Java Jahn
You might miss this java spot if you're not paying attention while driving down Leary Way. The place is very small - just a little open-air spot with room for 1 table. The prices are pretty good. The service is friendly. The barista always greets you with a smile. And it's probably the best java in its location. You can get good coffee further into Fremont or Ballard. But, Java Jahn is worth a try. In the summer, the front garage door is usually open, which creates an inviting atmosphere for pedestrians
Champion Party Supply
There are some better costume shops in Seattle. But, this one definitely has a great collection of Halloween stuff, costumes and party supplies for any occasion. They have a small parking lot on the side which is free for customers. And, they always have an amazing seasonal display to entice lots of new customers into the store at peak times (like Halloween!)
Party @ Display & Costume
This place has more than just Halloween stuff. They have an amazing collection of stuff for Christmas too. But, the place really goes wild in October. Even the parking lot and outside of the building get into the spirit. They have mechanical monsters everywhere! Blacklights, plastic rats and spiders; EVERYTHING you could ever want for haunting your house. They also have a gigantic costume section.
PROS: No refunds on seasonal items.
CONS: not enough parking around Halloween
