BlackLava
First time I checked out Black Lava website, I found myself wanting to hook up a couple of the shirt designs. cool website, good information, representing asian culture and fashion. grass roots organization. I'm glad i supported this business. Prices are cool, not bad. Lots of links on the site to many other entertainment.
Cafe Balcony
Cafe Balcony is so tucked away you might not see it right away. Keep looking, or on Thursday nights listen to the live jazz band playing (Billie Harris Trio). I dig their espresso--gold seal. They offer a great coffee selection, even siphoned coffee! Nice assortment of tea, and smoothies, also they offer sandwiches. Also sorts of different art on the walls. Actually, I try to hit up Cafe Balcony every Thursday to hear free live music. Their website is cool, informative, provides nice links. Service is friendly, makes you feel at home, or like your at your friends home. I think they also have internet service available.
Cd Trader
CD Trader has been around for a while. They have a steady group of regulars, myself included. They offer used and new CD's and DVD's. DVD section is a limited. Jazz cd section is bountiful. Good picks if you're willing to search a little. For music hounds such as myself, that's no biggie. Only thing is that you can't preview cd's before you buy them. Rock section is huge, most of the store actually. Box sets and memorabillia also available. Blues, reggae sections are limited. I've traded some Merle Travis and Neil Diamond CD's I don't ever remember buying, and I was able to hook up some nice deals. You can also get a frequent buyer card. After 10 purchases, 11th is on the house ($7.99 or less).
Coffee Fix
Why I like this coffee shop? Because it stays open late--midnight, on Friday and Saturday (5-7 pm) they have an acoustic guitar player playing jazz standards. Great sound. I can't say much about the sandwiches, my friend liked his croissant ham/turkey sandwich. I know they also have Internet access, lots of folks emailing on laptops. Fair prices, parking available on street, and behind building. You can get a regular visitor card, after 11 purchases, 12th is on the house. They also have message board, flyers for theater, poetry, music events, community listings. But for me it's the music and coffee.
Tropical Carribbean
Family owned restaurant, Tropical Carribbean is a small place, very comfortable setting. Owner's 2 children took our orders with a smile and professional attitude. Great dishes, wonderful fruit smoothies. Tropical feel. Owner came out twice to check how we were doing, gave us a fried yucca dish to try free of charge. It tasted wonderful. Food portions are huge, reasonable price. I felt respected and well taken care of. If you dig Carribbean food, and you like that family feeling, then this is the spot for you.
Sue and Sam Jewelry Co. Inc.
I went to Sue and Sam's about a year ago on the recommendation from my sister. I purchased an engagement ring for my fiance, and just recently we picked out our wedding bands. As good a selection as you'll find in the Los Angeles Jewelry District, the difference is that they are trustworthy, willing to work with you. I'm big on being able to trust the people I'm buying diamonds from. All their diamonds are certified, and they provide you with verification. Other family members have gone to them and had very similar experiences. I strongly recommend. Engraving available. Parking situation? Well, you're in Los Angeles. You'll have to walk a little, there's parking down on 6th and Hill--$5 .
Il Tramezzino
Yeah I thought IL Tramezzino looked cool from the outside, but I soon realized that what was really cool was the coffee. It wasn't served hot. My waiter had a hard time understanding I wanted a double shot of espresso in my mocha, and brought me an additional espresso separately--also luke warm. Tira misu was good, thank goodness. Hollywood type clientele, outside patio, too many patrons on cellular phones. I won't be back any time soon.
Boba World
Boba World offers an overwhelming variety of boba drinks. It's easy to get confused as to what you're really gettin sometimes. However, it usually tastes pretty good. Good prices, plastic seals on each drink to avoid spillage, boba is firm, tasty. I hate when I get soggy boba! You can get frequent visitor pass and after 8 purchased drinks, you qualify for one free one. Cool spot.
Kayla's Bakery Cafe
We love this coffee shop, tucked away in shopping center on Victory and Tampa. Great coffee served in huge mugs, refills on regular coffee. We especially love the Pannini sandwiches, served with chips and pasta salad. We've bought bread, desserts, cookies and enjoyed them all. Family run business, friendly service. Can get busy at lunch time, but you still get your food in a timely manner. Prices are fair. Tea selection also very good. Try the Indian tea.
Urban Retreat
Urban Retreat is a great place to go for your next massage treatment. We found this place by accident. We were driving down Ventura and saw their sign. The staff there was very friendly and helpful. I found the massage therapist to be very skilled and open to meeting my needs. The prices here are very manageable and affordable. There are a number of local spots that completely overcharge. I feel like the prices here are reasonable and you get quality service. The atmosphere is relaxing and the location is convenient. I recommend Urban Retreat for your next massage appointment and enjoy the relaxation!
