One of the few longstanding shops on lower State. St. is one of my favorite places. Most people come to this funky shop for one of several things. They carry women's and men's clothing/accessories, jewelry, stickers, bags, candles, water pipes, rolling papers, funky statues, tapestries, and much more...I go back again and again because they have one of the most extensive selection of body jewelry in downtown SB for reasonable prices and good quality. Staff has been helpful each time I ask , giving me advice on what gauge may work for each type of piercing and also when I need to look at other things in display case. I always check the sale area in the back for bargains too!
A local practicioner for over 30 years, Dr. Young offers a wide variety of services conveiniently under one roof. The travel clinic is the place to book all your preadventure immunizations before you leave. Or make an appointment with the female nutritionist to see if your healthy habits are on track. I went to see Dr. Young at the same time as my man for some problems we were both having, and the receptionist Concha was very sweet and helped us by giving us a double appointment for a lowered consultation and first visit fee because I was a starving student! I would go again...
I have had my fair share of dislikes about some of my former dentists, such as the type that tries unto death to arrange a consultation with his orthodontist colleague, or the type that tells everyone and their mother that their old fillings NEED replacement even when they do not, or even just the plain creepy type that you never want to meet again let alone stick fingers in your mouth...Dr. Burke's office is the answer to all these little problems. A really nice guy who always seems busily interested and cheerful, he has cared for my teeth for the last 9 years. Staff are generally very friendly and hygeniests have done fast and thourough cleanings. I've also gone to have my childhood molar sealants redone and was very pleased with that service as its prevented me from any cavities thus far. Dr. Burke always looks at the positive aspects of the health of my teeth, rather than focus unneccessarily on cosmetic or orthodontic aspects. Also they have helped me schedule around changing insurance needs or when I was uninsured they would allow me to skip xrays etc if I requested it. I highly recommend him and his office.
You can go for a prenite out wax and hair cut or updo at this hip little salon on the side of Cannon Perdido near Nordstrom. I got a cute fluffy bob from Christy one time and a more layered choppy cut another visit, both good but i remember fairly expensive prices. I have not been in for a wax here yet, so be sure to recommend someone you like here! Salon was bright with big glass windows so you can people watch a little, and stations were neat and clean. I had a problem when I tried to pay with a credit card and they did not accept them, so ask first!
I've definitely gotten lucky here like when my Jeep needed a new battery pronto on a busy preholiday weekend and they had one in stock...also have used them for replacement windshield wipers, general car fluids, small parts ie. blinker bulbs, seat covers, and other regular parts. Definitely don't expect to find parts for all cars or trucks, esp. specialty/euro/good quality aftermarket...if you want the best choice try the internet first and use this place for basic needs.
The aisles are really tight in here so have a list a make it quick...its hard to find the line near the parts counter so be aggressive! I nearly got into it with some woman who insisted on cutting in front of me in line because she had been standing in the wrong place and "had to get up San Marcos Pass immediately!" despite the fact that I had been there before her!
Whether you need to wow them with your snazzy posterboard presentation in school or you are a professional artist in the local community that wants a new tool of the trade, this store has it all for your art needs. I always feel comfortable asking the friendly staff for help navigating the colorful and well merchandised retail space. I truly love the handmade special papers on racks toward the back of the store for making one of a kind gifts and wall art. Or embark on an archival project for your family photos and enlist the help of the staff to choose the perfect acid free set.
Don't forget to look for coupons in the local junk mail, there are some most weeks for at least 10-20% off supplies!
Unfortunately for me, after years of thinking about going to this salon for a really edgy cut and color, I finally went and had a less than stellar experience. In a small world like Santa Barbara, it's just my luck that I was paired with a stylist I had been to in the past at another salon. When I saw this stylist previously I did not return, so it was quite an unpleasant surprise to say the leastto have to be rude and point it out ! I left with a just ok cut and with a bad taste in my mouth from the experience. They did not offer beverages until far into my cut even though they had out a sign saying they increased prices to reflect level of service! Get a recommendation on a stylist before you book!
A most popular spot, you can call for an appointment time or time find out the wait and I recommend it as they get a large number of walk ins from the mall shoppers. My friend chose this spot to treat the girls and I in her bridal party to a spa manicure/pedicure. They were easily able to accomodate our group of 8 because she prebooked even though it got very busy that morning after we arrived. Some of the manicurists did a better job with the french manicures than others, my white tip was overly wide and looked off(probably because my lady was jabbering to the other ladies nonstop and looked at them more than my feet. I'd give them another try if I was downtown with a friend because of the location and standard prices for a mani/pedi but hope I got a different gal.
PROS: Easy location.
CONS: Too busy sometimes, long wait.
If you or anyone you know is expecting or recently delivered, you should take some time and immerse yourself in baby goodness here. I love the huge selection of outfits made to look just like mini mom or dad fashions alongside some traditionally cute emblems like WInnie the Pooh or other popular children's characters. The store can feel a bit overwhelming with so much cuteness packed in a brimming retail space, but don't let the stroller brigade intimidate and get up to the counter! Staff has been extremely helpful in the past when I've had size/age questions etc. and they gift wrap nicely for showers and other events.
PROS: Super cute items...
CONS: High prices for some budgets!
