Lewis Produce is just that, a produce store. Most grocery stores are a store with a produce dept, this is a Produce store with a general merchandise dept. What is most surprising and special about this store is it's pricing. The produce isn't only always in stock and always fresh, it is always cheap too! The downside to this store is it's lack of customer service dept. The one time we had problems with strawberries that turned into a container of mold in 24 hours, we had a real struggle to take them back. You get more customer service in larger chain stores. But, if good produce (usually) at a good price is all you require, Lewis Produce is for you!
Horsefeathers opened about 20 years ago and was a great place to get vintage clothing and "hippie" looking items that were nostalgic in the 80s. In addition to clothes that date back literally 100 years they have a large selection of incense, jewelry, headbands, and other accesories. The down-side to this shop has always been the owers. As a teen, I would spend every available dollar I had in their shop buying "just the right" accessory or specialty item that I couldn't find in mass merchandising stores like Target or Walmart. They made us (myself and others that shopped with me) feel that we were unwelcome as we didn't seem to spend enough money in the shop for the owner's satisfaction. It is too bad they didn't realize that teens with $20 to spend grow into adults with $100 to spend....and we choose to spend it where we feel welcome.
King's Buffet is a good place to go when you have a taste for Chinese food and are feeling ravenous. They are moderately priced, but it well worth the price. They feature everything from a salad bar, and chinese dishes like egg rolls, meat and veggies in sauces with rice, to a seafood selection. They have a bit of everything and it would be very easy to find something for everyone in your dining party. They are well lit and clean and the service is excellent. The only complaint I would have is the lack of nearby parking. They are in a strip mall and share the lot with many stores on both sides of them and it isn't always easy to park there.
Happyland Pet Center is in an older building in Beach Park and you may be quick to drive right past....but it is VERY worth your time to stop by. They have all the usuals: cats, dogs, fish, and the like as well as the food and cages for the same. What makes them unique is their love of animals. They have in the past had their own dog lounging about the store for visitors to give a pat to. I was so impressed with their caring attitude and their commitment to getting the animals good homes, that the last time we had a litter of pups, we donated them to Happyland to find homes for them for us.
Thanks Happyland for years of great service in Lake County
Larsen's Florists is one of many privately owned businesses in Waukegan that add so much to our city. They have a huge billboard out front that is changed to match the season or occasions that are upcoming and usually is done with humor and adds to the surrounding area (many billboards are a detriment, this is NOT true for Larsens's board). They always feature brilliantly arranged flowers and potted plants for gifts or to add beauty to a room in your home. Their many years of experience makes them easy to work with for the first time flower buyer. They deliver and are a good value. They are slightly higher than a grocery store floral dept but the quality is so much higher that they are worth the extra couple of dollars.
Gurnee Theater is impressive in a word. It has nearly 20 theaters within it's building. When a movie is released, they are able to show it on 2-4 screens at a time to accomodate all the patrons wanting to see this week's hot show. The theater is typically very clean and well cared for. It is about 15 years old with very little visible wear and tear. The prices are average for a movie. The do offer children's tickets and senior tickets for a lower price for those that qualify. They have a large snack area with usually quick moving lines. The concession prices are high, but not higher than any other theater. They do allow refills of both popcorn and sodas!
Wiseway Insurance co. is adequate. Pure and simple. They provide the insurance you need (and the car insurance required by IL law), in a very small, very no frills way. I have never in my 8 years of doing business with them needed to make a claim, so, I don't have experience with their claim service. I have however made LOTS of payments in the office, many, many times, the ladies inside are bickering and calling each other names. There is not an air of professionalism in this office. If the stafff was more professional, and the office more upscale I think the clients would feel more confident in the insurance they are purchasing at Wiseway.
Cub Foods in Waukegan is full of great values! Their prices are excellent for our area. Price-wise they are one of the best! They feature an on site pharmacy, deli, bakery, produce, and Mexican Foods Specialty areas. For me, one of the best things about this store is that they accept expired coupons upto 6 months. This is a great convenience to their customers and gives long life to your coupons.
I really like Dr Crawford as an optometrist for my daughter that requires glasses. He is very thorough and good at answering her questions as well as my own. The office is a bit small, but has more of a family feel to it as a result. The in building glasses center is a huge convenience, you go straight from Doc to tech. They are available upto 4:30 which is convenient for those with kids that don't want them to miss school. These Doctors of optometry are the best!!
I like Dr Solomon. He is the dermatologist that treats my son and he makes sure to talk TO my son and not just me to make him feel comfortable and happy visiting the office. He is practical and down-to-earth and his practice accepts many insurance practices as well as IL State Medicaid. They are conveniently located in the medical plaza off Washington at Greenleaf so they are easy to find.
