Pets In The City
I am not fond of stores that sell puppies. This store is no exception. The dogs are in open type cages. There are signs that ask you not to pet the dogs, but it would be very easy for a child (and I saw lots of children petting dogs) to get get bitten by the sharp teeth of a playful puppy. This happened to me when I rested my hand on the edge of a cage and a playful lab grabbed my hand. The puppies are kept with others, which is good, but the torn paper at the bottom picks up the smells. If you're looking for a dog, I'd recommend a breeder rather than Pets in the City.
Genes Locksmith
Genes Locksmith is a reliable locksmith who's prompt and gets the job done quickly. I had two locks changed and had no problem. I had the same thing done a couple of eyars later and had absolutely no problem. Promptness, quick service and keys that fit. I couldn't as more froma locksmith.
Desert Art Supplies
Henderson has several art supply stores that are outstanding and this is one of them. It is different than the large art supply stores that sell lots of other products. Wandering around Desert Art Supplies, you feel your artistic side coming forth! Desert Art Supplies has all sorts of paint, brushes, markers, pencils.......They have gorgous specialty papers. My son found a great silver corrugated cardboard for a school project. This is a great place for the serious, casual, or want-to-be artist.
Ack's Attic
Ack's Attic is one of the several antique type stores in Boulder City and is definitely the strangest. It is closed most of the time. When it is open, and you go in to shop, there are many warning signs about breaking and buying. The proprietor did not acknowledge my presence. The items were very overpriced, and I never actually saw anyone buy anything. There were items perched on the edges of shelves, as well as on the floor, making one wonder if most of the sales came from breakage. This is a store that's best left closed.
Fiddlesticks
Fiddlesticks is a quilting store, but they also sell accessories as well as fabric, thread, and just about every thing you might need for quilting. Boulder City has several Art Fairs each year, and Fiddlesticks puts out items for a sidewalk sale. I purchased a nice painted cast iron weather vane at a reasonable price. If you're a quilter or need fabric for crafts, Fiddlesticks is for you.
Periwinkle Cottage
Periwinkle cottage is a small store that sells home decor and accessories. They carry the occasional antique and have shabby chic items. They carry lots of different soaps and lotions, gift items, candles, and a small selection of jewelry. You can never tell what you might find. They also have a small stock of coffee and teas, as well as some tea pots. It's a pleasant place to shop for a gift and it smells great...all those soaps and candles!
Nevada Tendonitis Center
Nevada Tendonitis Center is a medical office with one specialty: ultrasonic treatment of tendonitis. Their main specialty is tennis elbow, but they have begun to use the ultrasonic treatment for plantar fasciitis. My physician suggested I try it since I had no relief after many visits to the podiatrist. For this condition, you go for 3 treatments a week (8 minutes each) apart. They caution that it can take up to 12 weeks to get relief. 3 weeks after my last treatment, I was in no pain, and I'd been in pain for months. This is a new treatment, but I highly recommend it if you need treatment for tendonitis or plantar fasciitis.
PROS: It works!
CONS: It's a little uncomfortable during the 8 minute treatment.
Luxor Hotel & Casino
The Luxor Hotel's beam can be seen at night for miles. It is such an odd building from the outside. The inside is rather like any of the other upscale hotels and casinos on the strip. If you have adolescents, the thing that's really great about the Luxor is the arcade. It's not cheap, but nothing much is cheap in Vegas any more. The arcade has just about any game imaginable. It even has a genuine small plane with a flight simulator inside. There's also a simulated roller coaster tha goes upside down. From the outside it looks stomach churning, but my 12 year old insisted it wasn't...just lots of fun. There are also, of course, plenty of adult activities at the Luxor, too: Gaming, entertainment, King Tut Museum.... the list goes on. Stop by the Luxor on your next visit to Vegas.
SkyMania Fun Center
SkyMania Fun Center is housed in a large building. The facility consists of a check in desk, snack areas, as well as a room for birthday parties. Oh yes, there is also a HUGE room whose floor is basically one huge trampoline. Actually it is many padded trampolines attached together. The tramplines also go part of the way up the walls. There is also a smaller are for young children. There are team games played on these surfaces, as well as aerobic classes, but not on the day I visited. You can bring your kids and let them jump or join them on the trampolines. It's great fun, but be careful! I tried to copy my son and ended up hurting my foot! Prices vary from $7.50-$8.50 per hour. They have a family day where one parent and one child under 18 jump for $12.00. It doesn't seem like a lot of time, but one hour is plenty, even for the most active child! Birthday parties are available.
Nevada Southern Railway
The Nevada State Railroad Museum is in Boulder City. There is not much in the way of a museum yet, but plans are in the works. They have a restoration building where they restore old locomotives and cars. There's a nicely restore train that now takes you on an interesting short excursion from the sparkling depot. The train runs on an old line at the foot of the mountains. It is a short ride, about 45 minutes, but the lovely coaches are air-conditioned. the fares are: Adults $7, Seniors (65 and older) $6, Child (ages 11 yrs and under) $4 If you're a visitor or a local, this is a good place to bring that train buff in your family.
