Colleen's Classic Furniture Warehouse
Unlike Collen's other consignment stores the goodd in this newly opened store in the Henderson foothills is mostly new and provided by the Furniture Mart. I bought two cabinets and they were priced lower than I would have paid in a retail store, but they were not ridiculously cheap. I felt that a lot of it was just plain ugly or maybe not just to my taste. They have accessories, like lamps, mirrors, pictures and things that were displayed by companies at various shows and which were not hauled back to the place where they originated either because it was too expensive to ship or too much trouble. Call for hours before you go because they've changed their hours several times.
PROS: Lots of furniture. In a light industrial area not many people know about.
CONS: Might be overpriced for furniture that was on display.
Black Mountain Grill
This just looks like a Bar & Grill with gaming, but I really enjoy the food. The presentation of the food is especially nice and it is carefully prepared and arranged on the plate as it would be in a very expensive restaurant. The desserts are huge and fattening and can be shared. Even though the restaurant is separate from the bar there is no wall to actually enclose the room and yet there was no problem with smoke that such a room often has. This restaurant is the sister restaurant of Tommy Rocker's East Side and the food at both places is great.
PROS: Well-prepared and presented food.
CONS: In a bar (which for some may be a pro).
Sheridans Frozen Custard
Some very good, smooth frozen custard. They have anything you might want in a creamy custard, but no place to really go in and relax. You can eat out on the patio if you like the ambiance of eating in the middle of a parking lot in a shopping center. PROS: Great creamy custard.
CONS: It's addictive.
Gilcrease Bird Sanctuary
I'm not quite sure what I expected to see when I decided to visit this sanctuary, but it wasn't this. The sanctuary is located on the far northwest side of the city and wasn't very easy to find, even with the help of Onstar. It was a depressing place with birds that were caged. The birds didn't seem exotic to me and there were pigeons and ducks and swans -- birds that were pretty common. And I saw a pig there, too. There was a nominal fee to roam the grounds.
PROS: It keeps the birds off the street.
CONS: Off the beaten track. Not much that is interesting.
Branske Sue - Umc Quick Care
I have only gone to this Quick Care one time. I signed in and sat there for nearly two hours before someone told me I was in the wrong office and needed to go around the corner. Apparently they have regular patients as well as emergency patient and this was not discovered until they finally called me. They should have had some sort of triage. I had to go around the corner and start from the beginning. The cost was $45. I thought I had broken my leg, but the doctor said, no, it was just a back problem and to go to my regular physician. I never went back and it wasn't a back problem or a broken leg.
PROS: They are open when your physician is closed.
CONS: They kept me twice as long as they should have.
Clubsport Green Valley
They had an open house with a free trial. We had a tour and the use of the facilities. The facility was clean, state of the art, and it had a beautiful pool area. There are many fitness and social activities each week for members. Although it's a health club, the ambiance and especially the price make it more like a private social club. There's a kids club with camp activities, and tennis for adults and children. It seemed like everything but the basics were extras, and those basics were pricey in themselves....maybe if I get rich...
PROS: Many things to do, family friendly, great pool and equipment.
CONS: Expensive
Valley Automall
They've finished the exit at the Valley Auto Mall and it's really easy to get off right in the center of the activity. Most car companies have dealerships right here and it is still growing. It seems that a lot of places are run by Findlay. The Ford Dealership has a nice restaurant that looks like a 50s coffee shop -- called Mustang Sally's and is a great place to wait for your car if it is being serviced. You don't have to be driving a Ford to eat there, but if you are having your car serviced there, you can have a discount. If you happen to buy a new car and can't get a good quote on your old you, Carmax is just down the street.
PROS: You don't need to go anywhere else to shop for cars.
CONS: None
Fastframe
I'm used to framing my own prints, but this one was especially large and would be in a place that was especially conspicuous and I really thought I'd leave it to someone who knew what he or she was doing. I came in with my print, which they measured and they ask me questions about what I'd like and based on my answers they delivered a lovely framed print and I had no worries. There were many choices of frame, mat, types of mounting, types of glass, etc. They used their computer to determine an exact price which was fair and it took about a week before it was delivered. Their web site is at http://www.fastframe.com/. The salesperson was very pleasant and I remember that they also had bins of prints and photos to choose from if you didn't have your own.
PROS: Work with a computerized system -- calculations precise. Great workmanship
CONS: Might be too expensive for those who usually do it themselves.
Apple Store
This is a great store. The machines on all on display and anyone can use them. If you come in with a youngster he or she can sit in the special section and play with a machine. You can make an appointment with the educational staff and reserve a special time when you will be able to sit with the machine and have a one-on-one instructional time. There are plenty of accessories for Apple product, including the Ipod and there's plenty of Apple software for whichever computer you're using. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. And the Fashion Show mall, where it is located, is a great place to browse.
PROS: Hands on instruction. No need to worry about holding up a line.
CONS: Nothing, as long as you've accepted that it is pretty expensive.
Odyssey Health Care
When my aunt was about to die, it was recommended that she live out her life at Odyssey. She was there for several weeks, which by most standards is a long time for a terminal patient in hospice care. I went to see her every day and she had no-one who knew her except for me and my brother. Never did I see her uncomfortable or not taken care of. The rooms were very clean and sometimes the people who cleaned the room would talk with her and she'd remember them. I know she didn't always remember me. I'd take her out on the grounds, which were well kept, but she kept on losing her awareness. Still I have no bad memories of her stay there. The facility phoned me when she passed away in the middle of the night and they offered counseling with family members of others who had lost a loved one.
PROS: A clean and well-run facility.
CONS: nothing
