Worlds Collide Media can make some pretty cool websites, that don't cost a fortune. They did a wedding website for a friend of mine that was totally custom and looked really great. They also do small business sites, advertising design for businesses, and do some process consulting work (that's how the company started). My friend's site was all in flash, and all she had to provide was the text (they helped write alot of it) and they made a site from scratch, set up a domain and made all the changes she wanted. I have other friends that use "The Knot" and other online sites, but a custom website with their own domain was really classy.
PROS: Custom Design, Very Creative, High Quality, Reasonable
Fox's Men's Store in Spartanburg has a huge selection of suits, business apparel, and formalwear. They offer layaway service, custom alterations/tailoring, and are experts at making individuals and groups look great. The staff is so friendly and helpful and really knows fashion. If you need a suit or belong to a group that needs matching suits, this is the place to shop in the Spartanburg/Greenville area. Fox's is a family owned and operated business that really cares about making you look good, unlike the large chains who only claim to care. They will even special order items if they don't have what you need in stock.
PROS: Great Selection, Great Prices, Friendly/Helpful Staff, Family Owned
The Sports Rack is a great place to get a stock or custom equipment rack for your car. They sell all major brands (thule, yakima, etc) and if there's not a stock rack for your vehicle, they'll figure out a way to make one work well. The staff are all certified for professional installations and their work and recommendations are always top notch. They're also really friendly and are willing to negotiate (somewhat) if you are looking for a better deal. I bought a rack there a few years ago and use it all the time for my bikes, skis, and hauling stuff on my roof. They have racks of all kinds, running strollers and also sell custom floor mats and cargo mats.
PROS: Great selection, helpful/trained staff, installation available, good prices
Hub Bicycles in Five Points is a great place to pick up a part, accessory or a whole bicycle. The staff really knows their stuff, and they have a good selection of bikes to choose from. Plus they'll let you take a test drive to make sure the bike fits like you want it to. There are only a few bike shops in Athens, and this is the best one of the bunch. Their prices are fair for a local shop.
PROS: Good Selection, Friendly Staff, Local, Convenient
Hodgson's Pharmacy is like taking a step back in time. This old school pharmacy is just classic Athensperiod. With an old time Soda Fountain and Ice Cream shop inside (best floats this side of the Mississippiand super cheap) this is a great place for getting your prescriptions filled by a professional pharmacist, and grabbing a root beer float for the road.
PROS: Helpful Staff, Fun, Nostalgic, great prices, Local
If you're looking to stock up the ole liquor cabinet, pick up supplies for the next big party, or just want a different beer to drink with your burger, the Five Points Bottle Shop is the best place in Athens to go. They have a tremendous selection of Wine, Beer, and Liquor and can supply kegs if you need one for a party. There beer selection is tops if you like microbrews and local beers (they have hundreds of beers available). The staff is friendly and is more than happy to provide a recommendation if you're looking for special wine to serve your date or bring to a dinner.
PROS: Great selection, low prices, convenient
Charbon's is a great little outdoors shop in Five Points. This place is like having an REI in your neighborhood. The people that work there know a ton about outdoors equipment, and they have a great selection of equipment (and can order anything you need if they don't have it). The store looks kind of pricey from the outside, but their prices are very reasonable, especially for the level of service you get, and the fact that they aren't a huge chain.
PROS: Convenient, Good Selection, Friendly Staff
Jim's Barber shop is the best place to go for a great haircut in Athens. Jim is about the nicest guy in town, and his connections are evidence of the quality work he does. Going to Jim's is like going to the barber shop you went to with your dad. He gets to know his customers, gives a great haircut, is a bit cheaper than the chain haircut places, and is just an all around nice guy. I've seen coaches and politician's come in to the shop when I've been in there, and most people seem to be customers for a long time.
PROS: High Quality, Great Service, Friendly, Nice People
Bel-Jean is an Athens stronghold, this place has been in business since before Kinko's ever started. They're mostly a custom print shop set up for larger jobs, but can definitely help you out with small jobs too. The staff there knows printing like the back of their hand and are more than happy to help you figure out the best way to set up your project. They also do binding, for those fancy class projects. Most people know Bel-Jean as the place you pick up printed course materials at the beginning of the semester. But if you're looking for a convenient, reasonably priced print shop, it's that too.
PROS: Convenient, Full Service, Very Professional
Frameworks is a convenient place right on Clayton street to buy picture and poster frames to jazz up your apartment. They also do custom framing (which can be expensive), and are really knowledgeable and friendly. It's also worth checking out their selection of framed stuff for sale. They have a decent selection of University of Georgia pictures and collectibles that make nice gifts for parents, graduates, or alumni.
PROS: Reasonable Prices, Great Location
