Burke Museum

Seattle, WA Museums 08/04/06: 'Pretty good, but didn't make an outstanding impression on me'

The full name of this museum is The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, I think. I have only been there once, and it seemed fairly interesting, but not enough that I felt like spending another afternoon there, although I have been in the area many times since. The only thing that stood out in my memory was a fairly good display of various objects from different countries in East Asia.

911 Media Arts Ctr

Seattle, WA Charitable Institutions 08/04/06: 'Great place'

This art center is a great resource! They have especially great film- and video-related offerings, with classes and equipment to help you learn to make films yourself and a wide variety of different showings. I've been very impressed with it whenever I went there for anything. Soon they even have a workshop related to circuit-bent electronics coming up.

University Of Washington

Seattle, WA Colleges & Universities 08/04/06: 'Excellent, depending on what you're studying'

For me, the Univ. of Washington was excellent. I have heard some people complain that class sizes are too big, but that seems to be true only with very general, lower-level classes. The class sizes in my most important classes (upper-level and obscure, such as Classical Japanese and Classical Tibetan) were often around a half-dozen students!

Central Washington University

Ellensburg, WA Colleges & Universities 08/04/06: 'Good overall, but limited offerings'

I had a mixed experience at Central. I only stayed for one year, and during that time I had some truly excellent professors. I am very glad that I went there for that time. However, it seemed like if I had stayed longer there would not have been much left for me to pursue there. If you want to study something like Japanese or Linguistics in depth, as I did, you may have to transfer to UW or another big school before your 4 years are up.

Ozone Records

Portland, OR CDs / Record Stores 11/30/05: 'great for experimental music'

I would have definitely given them 5 stars after my first visit a few years ago (I've only had a chance to go twice) - as they were one of the first places I ever found that actually kept old Current 93 records in stock, for example.
My second visit knocked them down to 4 stars just because the clerk kept bugging me to buy discounted tickets to a show he was promoting... ("but I'm leaving Portland this afternoon," I said, and he still tried to get me to buy one "just in case"....)
Then again, it was on that visit that I found a copy of Zoviet France's "Popular Soviet Youth Songs and Dances", 3 CD's packaged in felt, a treasure impossible to find anywhere else, so maybe they deserve 5 stars after all...
