The trainers at Cathedral Oaks are the best. Jamie will kick your into gear in her weighted workout class, and you she will train your core till you beg her to stop. Jim and his wife teach my favorite yoga class on Monday and Wednesday nights. There is also masters swim, a cardio and weight room, and several tennis courts. The staff here is awesome, when you walk in the door they greet you by name. The dues are pricey, so you'll only enjoy it if you can afford it.
PROS: friendly, great facility
Dr. Lum's office is always crowded. This is because he is so very good at what he does. He is the only glacoma specialist in Ventura County. He has an Optometrist on staff and an optical department where you can pick out fashion eye glasses. He also performs Lasik surgery, and is a very skilled and effective doctor.
PROS: highly skilled doctor
CONS: high patient volume, long wait for an appointment
Dinner at the Sidecar is an event. The traincar that looks so small from the street actually opens up and welcomes you with its soft lighting, soft music, and wafting fragrances drifting in from the kitchen. For myself dinner at this fine establishment is a luxury, and lunch is okay...but brunch on Sunday mornings is not only delicious, but also a bargan. The lemon curd is made from real farmers market lemons, and trust me, you have to try the croissant french toast!
PROS: AWESOME food
CONS: a bit expensive
I love the YMCA because they have tons of classes! I joined not sure if I would go enough to justify the expense, but its now one of my favorite things to do. The classes are varied enough to give you a great overall workout and the instructors have all been enthusiastic and engaging. I do wish they had more classes on the weekends when I have more free time, but I understand the limited demand. The atmosphere is also great since its a family establishment. It does not feel like everyone is just there to hook up like one might feel at other gyms.
PROS: lots of classes!
If you are looking for quality sod, this is the place to go. Not only is Southland located in the lush Oxnard Plain, but they deliver all over Southern California. Unfortunately they do not sell retail directly to customers, but if you are having your yard done, tell your contractor that you want sod from Southland Sod Farms.
Trader Joes has an upscale image, with downlow prices. Beyond the friendly staff in their hawaiian shirts, are also some fantastic bargans on basic items like milk, cheese, eggs and butter. Yes, if you're going to buy caviar, Trader Joes will be expensive, but its also a great place to find some everyday values.
PROS: natural and organic selections
Smart and Final has been undergoing major construction recently, though they have still maintained most of their stock. It is a great store for buying staple items in bulk at discount prices. Though their selection of food is limited to the processed and the packaged. Besides a small produce section, very little of the food they carry is without tons of sugar or fat.
PROS: cheep in bulk
CONS: little healthy food
One of my favorite time wasting activities is to walk around my local Green Thumb Nursery and look at all the lovely plants. Its always exciting to see a new plant, and if you are looking for something in particular, the staff are always helpfull and curtious. Even if I leave without buying a thing, I still enjoy my time parusing the plants and seeds and dreaming of future gardens.
