If you believe that freshness and quality truly matter in produce, this is an excellent place to start; not the best produce store in the area, however...keep looking...
The mothership for aging hipsters. This store sells $75 hawaiian shirts to the Porsche/divorce/midlife crisis set. I love Reyn Spooner shirts as much as the next guy, but the every one that leaves this store makes Reyn a little less cool.
When I was a kid, candy stores were not just in movies; they were real places with fabulous treats. Seek them where you can find them now. This one is good, not great, but taking your child there is the real treat.
What California beach experiences should be. Take the kids, go on the ferris wheel, get a frozen banana or a Balboa bar, and take a tour of the harbor; it's the land that time forgot.
Island Marine is worth visiting just to get a chance to chat with Kevin Smith, the nicest guy in the harbor. He's as knowledgeable as they come ,and has worked on more boats than anyone around.
A Newport Beach institution; Mr. Balboa is a great treat on a Saturday morning for an old style haircut, and even a shave with hot towels. Spas are for sissies; barbers are for men.
That is a pretty bold claim, but Carden Hall is the gold standard to which all other private schools in Orange County, particularly the Carden method schools, aspire. If your son or daughter tests in, there is not a better school out there.
If you want the best stuff, this is your stop. Go to Home Depot if you're looking to save money, but West End West, particularly Steven, is the best I've found in OC.
Want to see what kids will be playing with 6 months from now? Want to buy a kid that requires imagination, yet they will love playing with and treasure? Head to Our Gang's, a little nook on Balboa Island.
This is a store full of handmade craft stuff, quilts, dolls and the like, that is run by a religious enclave. Everytime I go in there, I get this feeling that these people, who make nice things, are just out there.
