I've been going to Adriana's unisex hair salon since i was 4 years old. Ive grown up knowing Adriana and her sisters who run the place. They are the sweetest people you'll ever meet, and fabulous hairstylists. Adriana's sister, Claudia, is the only person I know who can take my curly, tangled hair and blow it out pin straight! No one else Ive ever gone to has done my hair as well as her.
Beyond hair styling ,they also do manicures, pedicures, massages, waxing, and threading. Their prices are pretty reasonable considering how much it costs now to get a hair cut! It's such a friendly atmosphere. Even if i moved miles away id probably still make the trip just to go here i cant imagine going someplace else.
PROS: awesome staff, good prices
I shop in this petland once in a while for my cat. Ive also bought two hamsters here.
Normally I just go in for new toys because they have the best selection i think of anywhere else. I also stop in if i HAVE to get food but i just think its too expensive. Id rather buy my cat food at a wholesale club on even just a general store its alot cheaper for the same brands. The owner of the store though is an incredibly friendly, helpful woman.
I think if your going for a rodent, bird, fish or reptile, its a great place. They have some lovely choices of pets. But for the actual merchandise, save your money and go somewhere else.
PROS: Good pet selection, friendly staff
CONS: too pricey
I like this CVS because its not TOO big that you don't know where to find anything, but not too small that you can't seem to find anything you need at all. They've gotten a lot more efficient with their cashiers, though there is always that problem once in a while where there is only one cashier and a LONG line of people.
I especially love their extra care card which gives you coupons and cash back the more frequently you use it. We've been using it for years and it's a really good deal, especially since its free to sign up.
The pharmacy is great, i always use them for my prescriptions and they usually fill them quicker than the specified time they give. On the other hand, their one-hour photo center is lacking as one hour becomes 4 to 5, and your better off just doing it overnight and saving money.
I still think their magazine section could be expanded a bit more but other than that, im pretty satisfied and make quick trips here all the time.
PROS: bigger, extra care card, great pharmacy
CONS: one hour photo
This particlar blockbuster is a mere 2 blocks away from my house so we frequent it enough. The store has been expanded a bit and the layout has been changed. They definately have a larger selection than they used to. Their video game selection is most notable. It used to be really small but now they have a lot more games to rent, which i appreciate as i always felt their gamecube section was dwindling more than other bigger systems like Xbox.
Those who work there are, for the most part, respectable and helpful. I just always feel as i do with most blockbusters that its just missing something i cant put my finger on that keeps it from being great.
PROS: wider selection
CONS: just seems to be missing something
Portofino's is the ONLY italian restaurant I'll eat at. I don't like italian at all. Spaghetti? bland. chicken parm? Ew. But here... my world changes. Everything tastes heavenly. Ive gone here for a lot of special occasions through my life, communion, birthdays, graduations. The service is wonderful. The place is a delight to eat at. They have the best shrimp scampi in Queens, hands down. They can be expensive but it's absolutely worth it.
PROS: amazing italian food, service
Ok, before I get into the rat story... first the food at Unos is greasy and disgusting. It's not "real" pizza per say, not New York oven pizza. But if you could ever have pizza that was comfort food, this is it. The buttery crust is delicious... and probably will give you a heart attack no matter what your age.The prices are reasonable though, as far as most restaurants of this kind go. The staff is amazingly warm and friendly Ive never had a bad experience with the waiter and the food comes FAST.
But, alas, we did see a rather large, dirty rat run through the restaurant on our last meal (ever) there about a year ago. So... this particular Unos? Stay away. Far. Away.
PROS: Great comfort food
CONS: Apparently they share rent with rats
Victoria's Secret in the Queens Center Mall used to be alot smaller but it expanded and took over another store next to it. The store is huge, and the selection of lingerie is wonderful. They have a nice selection of their cosmetics line too, which is really nice to see because not all VS stores have this.
But the people who work there seriously haggle you to buy something, mostly trying to get you to buy their most expensive bra. Personally, $45 for a bra isnt my idea of a steal. They also constantly bothered me to sign up for their credit card. I had 4 different people come up to me and I had to clearly say no to each and I left because I was fed up. I absolutely cannot browse in this store without being bothered, so I rarely go in anymore.
PROS: good selection, has their cosmetics too
CONS: persistant, annoying staff
Queens Center Mall had always been the most run down of all the malls in the New York area. Good for a quick trip but not a mall you wanted to spend much time in. A year ago, that all changed with new renovations expanding the mall into two buildings connected by walk ways.
The mall now has redone lighting, pain job, and dozens of new stores. They have an applebee's in the main, original building and moved the food court to the newer building. The food court has a lot of choices, your typical fast food like KFC, Taco Bell and Mcdonalds and some other cool choices like Ragin' Cajun, Great Wraps, and Tea & Tea. There's also various other places to pick up something to eat within the malls floors, like Starbucks, Pretzel Time, Haagan Daz, TCBY & Mrs. Fields (joined together mmm!), Dunkin Donuts, Cinnabon, and a few others.
They have stores for everyone looking for anything. The old building is now known as the Macy's wing, and the new one is the JC Penny's wing. I actually ENJOY being in this mall now and could spend my day here browsing around. They have big names like Pac Sun, Express, Fossil, Gap, and smaller stores like Papaya and Forever 21.
There are more spaces available for rent for more stores so i cannot wait to see what new additions there will be. I highly reccomend stopping in here. Its so much easier to get to than going out on Long Island to Roosevelt Field or The Source.
PROS: expansive, SO many stores
I went to Mars 2112 for a sweet sixteen lunch for a friend of mine a couple of years ago. When you arrive you can either wait to be brought to the dining area VIA a 3D simulation ride that takes you to "Mars" which is very cool, or you can opt for the quicker path and just be taken straight there. It's less of a wait time for your table but if you have kids i suggest you do the ride.
The food was ok. It wasn't anything spectacular but really overpriced mostly because your paying for the theming more than anything else. The service was incredibly fast, though. They have various "life forms" walk around and entertain, but some people i could see were a bit annoyed by some of the actors. They also add an extra $2 to the tab for every person in your party. For what? The entertainment i guess.
THere is a very small arcade room, and after you leave a gift shop full of more overpriced stuff. Buy a key chain but dont give in to anything else.
I want to go back to experience it maybe one more time. It's something different, atleast. But maybe after a 2nd trip, i dont think ill continue patronizing the place.
PROS: awesome theming, friendly fast service
CONS: way overpriced, food just ok
Uncle Louie G's is a wonderful ice cream/italian ice shop on Austin street and a favorite place of mine to stop after shopping in Forest Hills. They have so many different flavors to choose from and a choice of frozen yogurt, ice cream, or italian ices. You can mix any flavors you'd like. My usual is a watermelon/kiwi italian ice mix. They also say Jones sodas, which are uniquely flavored bottled soda (like Peaches and Cream and Green Apple) which are hard to find in most stores. The prices are great and the people who work there are fun and helpful.
PROS: so many flavors! great prices
