Beacons Closet
I am amlost embarrassed to say that I go to Beacon's Closet on average once a week. They just have such great stuff at decent prices so you can't go wrong. Also, you can trade in your old clothes for new old clothes which is very exciting, especially if you're unemployed or underemployed! Ignore the super hipster women who might glare at you. Don't let them stop you form getting the cheap slightly used clothes you deserve.
PROS: cheap clothes, good brands
CONS: glaring hipster girls
Traditions
Traditions was a haven for me when I moved to Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. The offer fresh organic produce, any vitamin you can imagine, a great frozen veggie junk fod section, a juice bar, and a new little sammich shop. The employees are very friendly and always ready to help you out. OOOh, and in the summer you can get Soy Dream by the scoopful. Delish.
PROS: lots pf vegetarian junk food, soy d by the scoop
CONS:
Pet Haven Animal Hospital
A few months ago, I found an abandoned kitten in the garbage room of my apartment building. After calling 311, Animal Rescue (both a joke) and many other shelters, Pet Haven was the only place that would take in this sweet little kitty and keep her alive. They cleaned her up and dewormed her, and generally took excellent care of her at no cost to me. They also provided a safe environment for her until she was adopted.
PROS: No kill animal shelter, excellent pet care
CONS:
5th Avenue Cat Clinic
Even when I didn't live in Park Slope, I brought my cat to the 5th Avenue Cat Clinic. Because the vets only deal in cats, I don't have to worry that my fraidy cat, Mr, Yoba, will ever have to be traumatized my dogs in the waiting room. The doctors are very knowledgable, and prices for services such as shots and teetch cleanings are pretty standard (for Brooklyn). I have always felt very comfident knowing that my cat is in good hands with the 5th Ave Cat Clinic.
PROS: open late, very good care, cats only
CONS:
Elan Salon & Day Spa
I have gotten many great services from Elan Salon and Day Spa. They offer the cheapest waxing around, and do a great job. I have the most sensitive skin, and none of their products caused me any irritation. The also have a little private pedicure room with two seats. Great place to bring your mom.
PROS: Good prices, clean
CONS:
Exit 9
Whenever I'm in the East Village and looking to kill some time I head to Exit 9. They have great kitchy retro housewares, inexpensive jewelery, and really really REALLY great bags. A nice staff doesnt hurt either. No one likes to be sneered at when they enter a store.
Dr. Robert Chavez
As you probably know, finding a good doctor in New York City is not an easy thing. Dr. Chavez is one of those great doctors that will see you at any time, call in prescriptions if you can't get in to see him, etc. I usually feel most comfortable with female doctors, but I never felt anything but well taken care of and cared for by Dr. Cahvez. Definately recommended!
Ponge Wilson Isabelle Md
Dr. Ponge-Wilson is a wonderful doctor. I saw so many specialists before she finally diagnosed my skin issues and got them under control. She will always see mhe, even if there is no time in her schedule book for an appointment. I think this is an invaluable for a doctor to have.
Fringe Salon
I had my hair cut and highlighted by Savannah at Fringe Salon and I don't think that I've ever getton more enjoyment or compliments on my problematic curly hair. They really know what they're doing, which I think is proceless.
Crossroad's Cafe
Finally there is a place in Windsor Terrace to get a decent cup of coffee! Two women recently opened this small cafe in the former location of Venus Video (worst video store, EVER) Crossroads is a great edition to the 'hood. Oh, and they sell pastries from Balthazar. Delish.
PROS: great coffee, great prices
CONS:
