Ymca

Seattle, WA Social Workers 05/24/05: 'The Best Heathcare Facility Ever'

I love the YMCA. Not only is the atmosphere free of the flexing-sort that frequents mainstream gyms but it seems to be full of caring staff and dedicated people who are there for good reasons: to become or stay healthy, community involvement for them or their children, and to have fun. This particular branch has many good classes for kids and adults, a nice array of cardio and weigh equipment, a pool, and a gym. There is a membership fee and individual or family plans to choose from. The monthly payment can be directly withdrawn from your account if you choose.

PROS: Friendly, good cause, great atmosphere

UW School of Dentistry

Seattle, WA Dentists - General Dentists 05/24/05: 'Cheaper Dental Care'

For those who do not have dental insurance, have a lot of extra time, and arae comfortable with student dentists, the UW Dental School might be a good choice for you. On average, the cost for services is less than those at private dentists. Payment for services is due the day completed. If you are accepted, throughout the quarter you are being treated so you must return for several appointments as the student continues to attend classes in the school year. A treatment plan is developed for you specifically. An instructor stops by to check on the student's work. At times, depending on your student dentist, services might not be as gentle as you might hope. But the students are very friendly and kind, ready to listen to any suggestions or complaints you might have. Another bonus is you do get much individualized attention. They did motivate me to keep my mouth in better shape (so I wouldn't have to return!)

PROS: Cheaper, in-depth care
CONS: Many appointments, takes time

Bernie's Automotive

Since I am not an auto mechanic, I routinely check at last five shops before committing to one to fix my automobile. Recently our van needed brake/rotor work. Estimates received by other shops ranged from $500-1000. At Bernie's they were up front and fixed what needed fixing - our brake problem, for much less. They were friendly and their services were quick. Whereas other shops tend to add on costs for items you don't want repaired, they seemed trustworthy and we will be taking our car in to get the clutch fixed next.

PROS: Friendly, fast, well-priced
CONS: In Ballard

Five Star Roofing

Kent, WA Roofing Contractors 05/20/05: 'For all your Roofing needs: Quick and Reasonable Service'

I know nothing about roofing, so it can be intimidating to hire people to fix the roof over your head. Luckily, my home inspector way knows way more than me, and gave the job a huge thumbs-up. Not only did they explain the process to me thoroughly in terms I could understand, but their cost was reasonable. They went above and beyond the requested task and repaired more than we had asked without additional fees. They arrived on time and fixed my roof within a days time. Give this company a call for your roofing needs.

PROS: Fast, quality, work

Madison Market/central Co-Op

Seattle, WA Delis - Seattle, WA Grocery Stores 05/20/05: 'Healthy and Delicious'

I remember Madison Market when it was the tiny Central Co-op on 12th Avenue in Capitol Hill. Now a large grocery-sized store, the Co-op continues to maintain community connection and involvement through its store on East Madison. Here you will find foods of the Gods: organic, healthy, and delicious! Membership is $60 (paid in increments or in full) but non-members are welcome and encouraged to shop. Shop here to support your local co-op and sustainable, organic farming.

PROS: Good sales, quality produce, lots-o selection.

Bookworm Exchange

Seattle, WA Book Stores - Seattle, WA Used & Rare Books 05/20/05: 'Get lost in Bookworm'

This new bookstore in the heart of Columbia Citys historic district is worth a visit. Find used books on every topic you could imagine, or enjoy a chess game in the cozy, plush chairs by the window. Books are reasonably priced, and the selection is excellent. Show up during the monthly Beatwalk for live music and good reading.

Lowe's

Seattle, WA Hardware Stores - Seattle, WA Home Furnishings 05/20/05: 'Have home improvement questions? Don't go to Lowe's.'

If customer service is not important to you, be sure to stop by the Rainer branch of Lowes. My husband and I have practically made Lowes our 2nd home while remodeling our house. Why do we continue to subject ourselves to the insurrection of uninformed, zombie-like staff? Lowes is closer than Home Depot.

PROS: Close to home. If you live close to Lowe's on Rainier.
CONS: Staff unwilling to help, uninformed, poor delivery service, inefficient...

Bikeworks

Seattle, WA Bike Shops - Seattle, WA Bicycle Repair 05/20/05: 'Bikeworks: A unique bike shop helping kids'

Do not let the small size of Bikeworks fool you. This non-profit has a huge heart and a honorable mission: helping kids earn bikes by teaching them all about bike repair and service. Bikeworks is a unique bike shop that not only gives back to the community, but is reasonably priced with a fully knowledgeable staff. In my experience of tune-ups, bike repair, and product purchase, the staff are extremely friendly, taking their time to help and educate each customer. The best bicycling experience is made possible through their recommendation of good local routes, the right tires for the ride, and the best gear.

A large, elegant movie theater just 15 minutes South of downtown Seattle, the newly remodeled Columbia City Cinema is located in the historic Columbia City neighborhood. It is fairly easy to find free parking in Columbia City on the neighborhood streets.
