Tucker's Super Creamed Ice Crm

Alameda, CA Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Shops 07/05/05: 'We all scream for ice cream.'

I don't know what "super-creamed" means, but Tucker's is pretty darn good. Your wait in line at the counter may be long, but that only gives you more time to think about what you want. You can choose how many scoops you want in a cup or a cone, have them make a small sundae or parfait or even pick up a hand packed quart to take home. They also have a variety of fudge and candy in case the ice cream isn't quite sweet enough. The service is a little slow, but who cares with ice cream.

Fenton's Creamery

Oakland, CA Family Restaurants 07/05/05: 'I scream, you scream...'

Fenton's Ice Cream is our favorite is our favorite ice cream parlor. They have over a dozen flavors and even more ice cream creations like sundaes and massive floats. The ice cream and ingredients are high quality and delicious. They also have sandwhiches and salads, but the ice cream is the resaon to come. Expect to pay somewhat higher prices than normal and to wait in line and to be surrounded by noisy kids, but the ice cream is simply worth it.

Four Star Pizza

Oakland, CA Pizza Restaurants 07/05/05: 'Pizza and more delivered to your door.'

With reasonably quick delivery and affordable prices, Four Star Pizza is one of the best options when hungry and you don't want to cook or drive. The pizza is quite good and they also offer such treats as made-to-order sandwiches, salads, and buffalo-style chicken wings. The prices are good and so is the food.

Orchard Supply Hardware

If you want to shop at a big hardware store with a great selection, but you don't want the hassles of the giant warehouse sized stores, then you should check out Orchard Supply and Hardware. Unlike their monolithic competition OSH stores are clean and well lit and there is always a friendly, knowledgable employee who is happy to answer your questions, help you solve your problems and find find what you need. It' always nice to be helped by somebody who actually is smarter than a bag of nails.

Take It Easy

Oakland, CA Restaurants 07/05/05: 'Terrific Thai Food in Downtown Oakland'

Take it Easy Thai in Oakland is one of my very favorite Thai restaurants anywhere. Their friendly and smiling staff offer up ever-so-tasty Thai food at an ever-so-econimical price on one of Oakland's hippest business areas. They are happy to make your food just how you like it and it's all made as ordered. No microwaves or other scourges of the fast food world here. Recently remodeled, the building is bright and cozy. Don't forget to order a Thai iced tea for a special treat.

Ratto's International Market

Oakland, CA Gourmet Shops - Oakland, CA Grocery Stores 07/05/05: 'A great Oakland Tradition.'

Ratto's International Grocer is probably the one of the older establishments in downtown Oakland (over a century old!) They carry things found in Italian delis like cold cuts, cheese, and olives, but they also carry unique dry goods from all over the world. They have an impressive variety of bulk pastas and grains, and their vinegar and olive oil selections are pretty decent.

The Map Center

Berkeley, CA Map Dealers 07/05/05: 'In case you are wondering where you are.'

The Map Center on Telegraph Avenue is a cartogrophiles dream come true. They carry giant wall maps of the world, regional maps, raised relief maps, globes, atlases, and all kinds of specialty maps. They carry everything map-related for all the armchair travelers out there. The people that work there are friendly and seem to know their maps. I strongly recommend this place particularly if you are looking for hard-to-find maps.

Happy Trails

Happy Trails is a fun store on Park Avenue if youre looking for a unique gift. Its self-described as your one stop Pop Shop because its filled with pop culture kitsch its got tiki and hula gifts, rockabilly trinkets, novelty items, and smart-themed gifts. Theres a small section of pricey hipster clothing and accessories, and lots of fun books. Even though its overpriced, this is a fun place to go shopping.

Offering tasty Chinese food at a great price on Shattuck Avenue in beautiful downtown Berkeley, this restaurant is great for take out or for a quick dine-in lunch or dinner. The friendly staff is eager to please and the food is worth every penny....and of course, you've got to love the name!
