About Hair is a hair salon as well as a furniture store. The owner, Duncan, also sells his paintings outside. The price to have your hair cut and a half hour message is $48. The eclecticism of this place is great, and I would recommend at least browsing the furniture part of the store.
The Friendly Toast has red walls covered in random paintings, antiques, and toys. The menu is unique and ppretty much anything can come vegetarian or vegan. The waitstaff is always really friendly, and the food is served on vintage plates with vintage cups. The best omelette in my opinion is the goat cheese, asparagus, and vegetarian bacon omelette, which comes with spicy hasbrowns, and your choice of six different toasts (hence the name).
This location always has quick service, although it can seem crowded. It is a nice place to stop and get lunch. The staff is always very friendly and personable. Also, like all Au Bon Pain's between 4-6pm all bakery products are 50% off. Try the almond croissants with the marzipan filling. They are delicious.
This is a great au bon pain to sit at, as it is right next to the Harvard Square T stop and very large. The sandwiches are delicious. I would recommend the Portobello and goat cheese sandwich on a sun dried tomato baguette. Also between 4 - 6 all of the bakery items are half price.
The Bakery owners and staff are really friendly and seem to enjoy selling their homemade baked goods. They also sell soups and lunch items. One of the best things they make is oatmeal plum scones. The only negative thing is that the lighting is poor so it is hard to sit for a long time and read or work as you would at most cafes.
Cuchi Cuchi is a restaurant with a versatile, unique menu. The entrees average about 10 dollars. There is a section of the menu dedicated to various snacks that would go well if you come in just for drinks. the ethnicity of the meals ranges from Spanish to French to Russian to Italian. There are also Tarot Readings one night a week.
The Ice Cream and Coffee here is just as good as the other location, however this location isn't as comfortable. It gives off the vibe of a place where you should get your snack to go. Otherwise, this place is great, and they just held a poetry contest for customers.
Toscanini's was voted Best in Boston for Coffee and Ice Cream. Both are extremely good and the atmosphere at this location is very comfortable also. It is a little bit expensive, but for the quality of the food, it is well worth it. The layout is conducive to socializing. The owner is also very friendly.
La Creperie has sweet crepes (the best is filled with Belgian chocolate and tropical fruit) as well as entree crepes. There are also Prix Fixe meals that include a drink, an entree crepe, and a dessert crepe or a bowl of soup. You can also get a 15% student discount. And it is open until midnight every night.
The Miracle of Science is a very trendy place to hang out. It has a huge periodic table of elements on one wall, and fits in perfectly with the MIT atmosphere. It is a little expensive to eat and the food isn't fantastic but it is a nice place to get drinks.
