Henry's Marketplace

When I first walked into Henry's Marketplace the first thing I thought was, "Did I accidentally stumble into Sprouts?"The layout and selection seemed identical to that of Sprouts. I liked the fact that they had an excessive amount of samples and I felt encouraged to buy their food as a result. However, the selection was average as not very many products were actually certified organic (you need to look for the USDA certified label). I prefer Whole Foods over places like Henrys and Sprouts because overall there is just a larger abundance of organic food. I appreciate the effort though, and I would much rather shop at Henry's if it was in my neighborhood, over any other mainstream marketplace. The prices were pretty standard, and that's okay with me.

PROS: good prices
CONS: small selection

Modified Arts

Phoenix, AZ Entertainers - Phoenix, AZ Bars & Clubs 05/24/05: 'Best place to hang out'

Modified arts is a modern art gallery by day, and independent venue by night. It hosts an eclectic array of local art and usually displays its best collections every first friday of the month during artwalk. When it's not showing off its grandesque art, it homes a stage and soundsystem for a prominent venue. Numerous local bands have embraced the stage as well as many huge touring acts. Shows are usually only 7 bucks each and last about 3 hours with at least 3 bands. It provides hours of entertainment for a miniscule price. Artwalk is free. I highly recommend this venue if you're visiting Phoenix, or if you just haven't had the chance to check it out yet.

PROS: art, music
CONS: small

Thai Rama Restaurant

Phoenix, AZ Thai Restaurants 05/24/05: 'Amazing thai'

I swear this place has the best Pad Thai ever. The prices are also very decent compared to other thai places of its caliber. I ony payed 8 bucks for a huge plate of Pad Thai. The Asian Coconut soup was amazing as well. I love their Thai iced tea it is my favorite part. The decor is very cute too and it's a nice quiet atmosphere. Good for a first date.

PROS: excellent food
CONS: english isn't very good

Jamaican Blue Coffee Shop

Scottsdale, AZ Clothing & Accessories - Women's 05/24/05: 'Coffee shop turned bar?'

I used to frequent Jamaican Blue in oldtown because the environment was awesome and the iced chai was yummy. It was also a plus that they had free wifi because that factor determines how much I'm going to like a coffee shop. The prices were standard and the staff was awesome as usual. I think they turned into a bar now so I don't expect to be visiting anytime soon. However I will continue to look back fondly on the establishment.

PROS: good drink selection
CONS: a bar

Mama Java's Coffee House

Phoenix, AZ Coffee Shops and Diners 05/24/05: 'Quaint Coffee shop tucked away in plaza'

Mama Javas was a great arbitrary find. Located on the corner of 44th and Indian school, it's difficult to spot it on the flyby, but it is definitely worth the extra effort to pay a visit. I ordered an Iced Chai with soymilk and it was excellent. My friend had the best cup of French Vanilla Coffee he's had as long as he could remember. The decor is homey and comforting, and the crowd is older and endearingly sweet. There is often live entertainment which completes the earthy atmosphere and sweet poetic renditions leave a good feeling in everyone around. The prices are a deal and I highly recommend this place for the person who wants to relax with his drink. There is also wi-fi but it isn't too reliable.

PROS: inexpensive, good atmosphere
CONS: shakey wireless

P F Chang's China Bistro

Tempe, AZ French Restaurants 05/24/05: 'Best lunch'

Before I ventured on this incredible dining experience my curiosity had always been peaked by those who had consistently raved about how delicious the cusine at P.F. Changs was. At the time I wasn't a vegetarian, so I had a wide selection of chicken, duck, and pork. I started out with the Peking Dumplings, which are basically potstickers with minced pork. They melted in our mouths and left us wanting more. For the main course I had honey chicken. It was cooked to the perfect tenderness and the portions were huge and porportionate to the price. It was only 7 dollars for a plate of chicken and endless amount of brown rice. The Mango iced tea was also delicious. Now that I am a vegetarian I go back occasionally for the vegetarian lettuce wraps.

PROS: wide selection, beautiful decor, vegetarian options, wonderful atmosphere
CONS: a little pricey at times
