Small and eclectic, this woman-owned, feminist bookstore is a great place to get the latest novel or most talked about book. It also has a widest, in-stock selection of feminist, LGBT, and women studies books I have ever seen in the Twin Cities. They can also order almost any book that are not on their shelves. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the store is small but full of interesting finds, and they frequently have readings, lectures, book clubs and community events in their downstairs meeting area (where they also have an area for Used Books, posters and bumper stickers). Amazon also has a kids' corner where a diverse and colorful collection of children's books are sold and they have reading time for the little ones. There is a parking lot a few feet away, which makes it convenient to stop by. In an era where small, independently-owned bookstores are rapidly closing, Amazon is one we should all be happy to hang on to.
PROS: Liberal; feminist; friendly; women-owned; gives back to community; wide sel
CONS: Smaller that the big chains; no room to sit and read
I wandered into this store as a Verizon customer, torn whether or not to switch to Cingular. I decided to see if my experience at this store would be good enough to warrant my switch. It was. I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed any help. The employee that helped me was focused on me and didn't leave me to help other customers. She walked me through the entire changing of my plans, buying a new phone, setting it all up, and made sure I left with a working phone and a plan I understood. She was friendly, helpful and not overly pushy. She also didn't try to sell me upgrades or accessories I did not want. It was the best experience I have had a cell-phone store!
PROS: Friendly and knowledgeable staff; helpful but not pushy; clear plans and pr
CONS: Busy b/c of location; didn't have all possible accessories
Once, a long time ago, Bridgeman's used to be a full diner with a grill, seats and a hostess. Now Bridgeman's has transformed into a sandwich/ice cream shoppe. Its selections of sandwiches, soups, salads, chips, pasta and drinks are eclectic and delicious. Everything is made fresh when you order it; the serving sizes are generous; and the staff is friendly and helpful. The best part of the whole establishment is the ice cream - traditional Bridgeman's ice cream with a wide variety of flavors and toppings. You can enjoy a Lollapalooza, buy a pint to go, or just get a regular cone. It's a great place to visit for a quick lunch and scoop of ice cream on a lazy weekend day.
PROS: Fun atmosphere (they have games you can play while you eat); wide variety o
CONS: A little pricey for a small sandwich shop.
This is no ordinary yoga studio. Keep an open mind when you walk into this yoga establishment. CFH is an environment dedicated to not only physical health, but also emotional happiness and spiritual awareness. All people are accepted - all ages, faiths, levels of expertise, anyone - and you can feel the happiness, diversity and acceptance seeping out of the walls. They offer a wide variety of classes - Kundalini Yoga, Sat Nam Rasayan, meditation, pre-natal yoga, kids' yoga, and healing sessions - to name a few. There is something for everyone here. I have never been to a yoga class or studio quite like the CFH, but I enjoyed it and I feel its mission, purpose and service is a good one. In addition to meditation and yoga, they have themed Tuesdays, a clothes drive for the homeless, and a variety of workshops. As long as you walk in expecting to embrace happiness with an open mind and heart, you will enjoy a session here.
PROS: Diverse, different, spiritual, experienced instructors; spacious area; reas

With a cool retail store downstairs and piercing and tattooing services upstairs, St. Sabrina's is the best place to go for a tattoo or piercing. The tattoo artists are clean, knowledgeable and friendly. You have to make an appointment for a consultation and then an appointment for the tattoo itself. They stress only the best hygiene for tattoos or piercing and have a wide assortment of tattoo designs and piercing accessories. The tattoo artists will also draw anything you want and consult with you on what colors, designs, etc will look best on your skin. I felt very comfortable and taken care of during both of my tattoos there. You don't feel rushed, foolish or insecure - they are friendly and willing to help! If you are getting your first tattoo, this is the place to go. All of their staff is knowledgeable when it comes to aftercare and the art of tattooing/piercing. They are more than willing to answer any questions you have and you can stop by any time to ask a question about a previous piercing or tattoo - in fact, they encourage you to do so!
PROS: od hours, clean, safe, knowledgeable tattoo artists/piercers, fun atmospher

The amount I know about music could fit into a thimble. So, when the idea came into my head to learn how to play the guitar, I was embarrassed to go into bigger guitar or music stores. Music-Go-Round was the perfect place for me. The Woodbury location is small store with a laidback attitude. Stocked with a variety of gently used guitars and musical instruments, I felt comfortable walking in and picking up different guitars and trying them out. In addition to guitars, there are drum sets, musical accessories, music books, etc. The staff was very welcoming and nice - one gave me a rundown on the basics of choosing a guitar. In addition to the laidback atmosphere, welcoming and informative staff and well-stocked showroom, the store offers lessons through private instructors. The rates for these instructors are reasonable and comparable to other music stores.
PROS: Laidback and comfortable attitude; reasonable prices; on-site instructors;
CONS: Smaller; used merchandise; you have to ask for help or information
