Most thoughful selection of poetry, literary fiction, architecture books, children's books, travel guides and journals in Houston. The staff will order any books that the bookstore doesn't carry, and notify you when they arrive. It's fun to go in and browse.
All my friends love this place, so even after I got food poisoning the first time, I kept going back in hopes it was an anamolly. About six months after my first poisoning, I got it again! Both times I had ordered their vegetarian club sandwich.
Going there for Sunday brunch is a huge scam, as well. I mean, if you're somebody who eats three or four plates of food for breakfast, you might not mind paying $15 dollars for a buffet brunch that doesn't include drinks; but there is no option for somebody who knows all they can eat is a couple eggs and some toast. It's $15 to pay for others' gluttony or nothing!
Houston is chalk full of better vegetarian fare.
PROS: Has an interesting interior
CONS: Gets me sick, overcharges
Both of the veterinarians in this practice are die-hard cat lovers. I have taken my kitty there two years. He used to be sickly, and they changed his diet, which made a huge difference. He doesn't wheeze and sneeze snot everywhere now! These guys are pricey, but worth itt.
PROS: great cat care
Cactus has a pleasant environment. Music is always playing, a lot of time music I've never heard and am interested in asking about. The movie rental selection is pretty large. It costs less to rent at Cactus than at major rental companies, but Cactus is a big enough store that it generally has all the videos you'll want, including independents.
PROS: Good music & videos
A poetry magazine that is put together in Houston and distributed throughout the United States. The magazine has been praised in Library Journal and is a real gem for the Houston community. It is full of well-selected, incredible poetry.
We found these guys on the Cartalk MechanXfiles. About fifteen people had recommended them already. I had spent several years looking for a mechanic, and was very relieved to find these guys. They are two friends or brothers, one trained by Mazda, the other by Honda. They charge about half the price for the tuneups than the dealer does, but are very knowledgeable about the cars. Once I lost a hubcap and the guy called a junkyard on the way to his house, picked it up for me, then put it on my car--all for ten dollars!
PROS: Wonderful Mazda & Honda repar
CONS: I think they only work on Mazdas and Hondas.
Charles was property manager of an apartment that we lived in. He fixed any problem that came up immediately, and was the best landlord we'd ever had. When we looked for a house to buy for ourselves, we asked him for help. He not only helped us throughout the buying period, but he continues to help us almost two years later, when we need advice or repair person tips. He is a great Houston realtor.
Dr Ehrlich spends at least thirty minutes with her patients, talking to them, every visit. I've never had a doctor who I felt knows more about me. I don't feel like going to her office is like putting myself on a conveyor belt, as I have with a number of other doctors in Houston. I know she takes BCBS but am not sure about other kinds of insurance. She is at ST. Luke's Medical Tower.
PROS: Fabulous medical doctor who cares
