I was desperate for a flight home at Christmas. as usual, I had procrastinated. I was worried I might not get ANY flight, let alone a cheap one.
I picked these guys at random from the phone book & they immediately found me a great price on a direct flight. They even booked a spot for my cat (under the seat)
I have been booking my own flights lately, but the cat & I highly recommend this travel agency.
I read the description of LoTo in the City Pages & it sounded really cool; bar, cafe, restaurant, etc.
I have been there twice, and both times have been a dissapointment, at best.
The first time we had reservations for the restaurant, but when we got there, they were shut down. No call or anything about the reservations. THe sign said they were having plumbing problems. I found it odd that they didn't call and tell us, since they did have our number.
The second time I went we ate in the bar on Monday evening. They were out of everything. The excuse was that they had a Salsa event on Saturday and the truck was coming in on Tues. So this means they had nothing to serve for TWO days??
No appetizers except fries were available. The dinner menu was also shot, for the most part, The sandwich items were also depleted. They didn't even have an ONION. I am not making this up.
I have heard similar stories from others. If it is still open by Christmas I will be surprised.
CONS: no food.
This place has been around for about a gazillion years. It has been in a few locations over the past 50 years or so, and I love looking at the old St Paul photos on the wall. They also have an insane collection of old flour sacs.
The staff is always friendly and the service is great. The menu is extensive, to say the least, and everything I've ever tried is delicious. I recommend the banana nut pancakes. Homer Simpson would like the eggs with porkchops.
PROS: inexpensive, historic, extensive menu
CONS: hard to pick - too many choices!
I spend a lot of money on shoes & I expect them to last. THis requires me to take care of them, and occassionally they have to visit the shoe doc.
I have had George fix up several pairs of my boots and shoes. He told me that many people actually bring in new shoes to be soled and the heeled (no pun)to prevent damage. It was a great suggestion and has really helped my shoes look better & last longer.
PROS: one of the few left!
CONS: none that I can think of
The gangster tour is something every Saint Pauler should experience. You will learn a lot of great history & be entertained the entire time. The tour guides assume the persona of a historical (bad guy/gal) character & tell all kinds of great stories.
You can get your picture taken with the baddie and a genuine Tommy gun (my dad thought this was a stupid idea, which it prob is, but fun!)
There is a similar tour of Minneapolis, too. I hear that one is almost as good
They offer a ghost tour in October. I didn't enjoy that as much as the gangster tour, but it may have been that we had a dud for a guide.
PROS: Lots and lots of info
CONS: pricey. Ghost tour not so hot
I stumbled upon this place when I was desperate for a pedicure. The Hawaii theme is a riot - lots of fake grass and reed umbrellas.
The lotions they use also tie in- papaya and pineapple. They smell really yummy and always make me want a pina colada.
My pedicure was great, looked good and lasted a decent length of time. Prices are reasonable
CONS: in Coon Rapids
I followed my manicurist here when her own shop moved in with the other Amis. I always have a great time when I am there & my pedicure lasts a ridiculously long time. I love the warm towel wrap...
PROS: everyone there does a great job
CONS: always call well ahead of time for appt.
Melissa, nee Nelson, but I don't know her married name, works out of this full service salon. She has been doing my hair since I moved here (more than 7 years).
I followed her to Salon Aria from Details. My bad hair days are few and far between. She is the best.
PROS: one stop for nails, facials, wax, etc
I discovered this Twin Cities favorite here: a cheeseburger with the cheese IN the burger. so bad for you...so good.
At the Nook you can get just about any burger/sandwich you want, and they have a good beer selection, too. You get a tshirt if you finish their Monster burger. I have yet to earn one, but I think I would be in the running.
This place is popular w. softball teams, so expect to wait for a table on summer eves
PROS: food is A1
The traditional breakfast/lunch fare at great prices. The neat thing about this place is that it is open late - after bar close it can get busy b/c O'Gara's is next door. The club sandwich is my fave. With any of the sandwiches you get your choice of soup or a salad, for less than $9.
Cute patio, too.
PROS: low prices, great food, open late!
