We have been to most fast food places in the area, and have narrowed it down to one simple fact: You can't get good service on 8 Mile. But if you go just a little north, to the Wendy's at 11 and Groesbeck for instance, you'll get much better service. They make sure that they get your order right, and they don't act like they're doing you a favor to take your order or refill your drink. The restaurant is clean, and it's never really packed when we go, so it's pretty quiet too. Very good for a fast food place!
Red Wing Shoe Store
I used to wear these old ratty combat boots to work (I'm a mechanic.) So I was on my feet most of the day and they weren't feeling very good. Someone recommended I check out the Red Wing store, so I went to see what they could do for me. Yes, their footwear is very expensive, but I couldn't be happier with them. I got a pair of boots that I'm comfortable standing in for a long time. I also get benefits like free shoelaces, and I can have them resoled rather than having to buy a whole new pair. The store's never too crowded, so there's almost always someone there to help you right away. It's also the only shoestore I've ever been to where someone actually helps you into your shoe.
Aaa Insurance
My wife and I have our homeowner's insurance through AAA, and we used to have our car insurance through them too. Anyway, their office is in a convenient place, even if they're hours aren't great. But if you need help after hours, you can call their toll free number and take care of anything you need. They insist that you have AAA roadside before you can have insurance, but that's fine with me! I can also get discount tickets for amusement parks, and free maps and travel guides for anywhere in the US.
Gibraltar Trade Center Incorporated
Gibraltar is a fun day trip. We go down there and browse the many stores, and find things we haven't seen in years, or didn't know existed even. The trade center has areas they call the Big Top and in those areas there are hundreds of items for very low prices. Other stores are rented to businesses, and you never know what you'll see. The layout of the place could certainly be better, and new lighting wouldn't hurt. It's a little dimmer than I'd like. This Gibraltar, as opposed to the one in Mount Clemens, has an area with old and antique cars, which my son loves!
Old Navy
We go to the Old Navy Outlet for clothes for the whole family. Last year we got our son a whole summer wardrobe for something like $5 each piec. My wife buys pants there because she hates paying full price for jeans. I like it because they're inexpensive, and I can get more for my money. Some of the stuff is specifically made for the outlet, but some is irregular. Most of the time you can't tell though. The store is usually pretty messy from crazy women searching for something in the right color and size, but the men's department is usually pretty neat. The staff is nice, and if you ask them for something, they're happy to help.
Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwich
You haven't had a sub sandwich till you have been to Jimmy John's. They have incredible sandwiches with premium ingredients, at competitive prices to the other major sandwich chains. But those others don't have the Gargantuan! It's not so much how big the sandwich is, it's how much stuff they fit onto that bun. There's something like six meats, plus all the fixings. And the do it quick and fresh while you wait. It's a cozy little place to eat too. No need to go anywhere else. The Gargantuan is at Jimmy John's.
Wal Mart Portrait Studio
I mean, where else can you go and get a portrait package for less than $10? The first time my wife took our son there, she had gotten a card in the mail offering her a picture package for $4.88. When we got them taken, the photographer was very nice and tried everything to get our son to smile. We have been taking him there for his portraits ever since. The price fluctuates based on the time of year, but it's never more than $15 for a package with more pictures than I ever give out.
Lavdas Jewelers
Last year on Christmas Eve, my wife looked at her engagement ring to discover a prong had bent and her diamond was gone. She was very disappointed, but didn't have time to dwell as there were Christmas preparations to take care of. So when she went out, I took the ring to Lavda's and asked them to put a cubic zirconia in it for the time being. They obliged, and less than an hour later, I had her ring looking almost as good as new. The staff was very nice to squeeze that in for me at the last minute, and they did a great job with it.
Advance Auto Parts
Advance is an ok parts store. They're well organized and generally pretty neat. I can get most everything I need, or they can order it for me. The employees are usually helpful, but they really need to have more than two guys at the counter helping people when there's twenty five people in the store waiting for parts. By now they should have an idea when the store is going to be busy, and be able to compensate for it.
Murray's Discount Auto Store
I'm sure that the employees at Murray's aren't stupid. They just aren't very helpful, and don't know anything about cars. I haven't been to a Murrays and gotten good help in years. The employees act like they're doing you a favor by helping you find what you need. And most of the time they have trouble with that anyway. But they do usually have or can get everything I need, and the prices are competitive, so I deal with it if the price is right.
