Oak Alley B & B Restrurant Inn
This is one of the prettiest landscapes in all the world. Grab a mint julep, sit on the veranda, and take a tour of this antebellum home given by 19th century costumed tour guides. And if you ask, you can even ring the dinner bell on the side of the house. This is by far the best plantation to visit on River Road!
Elio's Wine Warehouse
If you're having a party and need a keg, this is the place to go. You won't find a better selection of beer and better prices for it than you will at Elios. Their wine prices and selection are average, but the beer here is second to none. Cheers to Elios!
Star Nails
No appointment necessary here. You can get pedicure, manicure and waxing all in the same visit. They speak in a different tongue to each other, so you may have a hard time understanding everything that goes on. Overall, they're a great deal for keeping your nails and hair looking good.
Fifth Ward Elementary Cftr
This year FWE had both the pricipal and teacher of the year from St. John Parish. The teachers here are dedicated, and with its accelerated reading program, this school does a good job of getting kids off to a good start. Last year LEAP scores improved in every area and every grade. However, not every teacher here is stellar - some have been known to lock kids in closets and tell them they have monsters.
Louapre Iii Rene A Md - Louapre & Kokemor
Dr. Braedt is one of the most relaxed doctors you'll ever come across. His chill manner puts you at ease and makes you feel better before you even leave his office. He's never gets caught up in doctor-speech, and he's always willing to see you to help you out however he can. Highly recommended.
Maple Street Book
On the outside Maple Street Book Shop looks more like your neighbor's house than a book store. But on the inside, this store has plenty of books by local and national authors. Though their aisles are quite tight, in the front they have a bookshelf for each one of their staff members to display their favorite books. Famous for their "Fight the Stupids" bumper stickers, this friendly book store is worth checking out during an evening stroll on Maple Street.
Winn Dixie
You feel more like a criminal and less like a grocery shopper when you enter this Winn Dixie. They have more security guards than check out clerks because this is not in the best part of town. If you really have to shop here, be prepared to say "no" to all the folks outside who will ask you for a free meal or spare change.
Discount Zone
This is one of the nicest convenience stores around town. It's in a safe neighborhood, so you can even leave your bike unlocked as you pick up a soda or powerball ticket. The owner is extremely nice and will leave you with a smile on your face every time you leave.
Isidore Newman School
If you send your child to Newman, you'll be paying private college tuition, but a college-level education is what you will get. This is where New Orleans brightest students get an excellent education well on their way to the college of their choice. Ivy League schools look here when they come to New Orleans.
John McDonogh Senior High School
An educational specialist recently remarked that John McDonogh was the worst school he has ever seen in all his visits to inner city schools around the country. Known for a shooting that killed one of its students 2 years ago, John Mac was making postitive strides, but its new prinicipal is running its best teachers away.
