The penguins are by far the highlight of the St. Louis Zoo. The lines to get in may seem long, but it's worth the wait (which is not as bad as it looks). There is no additional charge.
On friday and saturday nights, the City Museum is open until 1am. All the tiny kiddies have gone to bed, so older kids and grown-ups can go and enjoy the museum. Another perk is that the admission is discounted after 5pm. It used to be $5 after 5, but I see now that it's is $8. Still cheaper than regular admission.
This is no TipTop cleaners, this is your very own ma and pop type of establishment. The owners are extremely nice and the quality of service they provide can't be beat. However, you're gonna have to pay a little more than you're used to at a chain cleaner.
Quality natural and organic products without putting a big dent in your wallet! The selection is not huge, but always interesting. Plus, the employees at trader joe's are, hands down, the best in the world!
If you have money to spend on fancy groceries, this is the place to shop. The CWE Straub's is a delightfully charming grocery store with a fabulous meat and prepared food department.
Home of Saks Fifth Avenue and Neimann Marcus, this is the classy place to shop in st. louis. Usually sparcely populated with patrons, you can shop in peace and quiet. The st. louis J. Crew is also here. And don't forget to stop by the restrooms by Sak or Neiman's--rated the best restrooms in the city!
The Kingshighway location of St. Louis Workout (in Chase Park Plaza) conveniently serves the central west end community. Just a jog away, it is a fun place to workout. The trainers and employees are exceptionally friendly. Features of a membership include free fitness evaluation and free classes (excluding spinning). With a 2 year contract, membership dues come to about $29 a month.
BEWARE: read the fine print on your contract. Many people have been hurt by the cancellation policy. You must notify them 2 months in advance of the end of your contract if you do not wish to renew, otherwise they keep charging you, and since you always have to give 60 day of termination notice, that ropes you into another 2 months of dues.
I've been coming to this bookstore since high school, when I used to spend hours in the basement where the used books are. Upstairs you'll find all the latest bestsellers as well as staff picks and upcoming book signings (big name writers come through, like David Sedaris). The staff is knowlegeable and friendly. Left Bank Books is a rare jewel of a bookstore in today's world of Borders and B&Ns.
The Pageant is a great music venue where you don't have to worry about parking, not even at big events. There is a lot behind the theatre that is just a short walk away. The venue is intimate without being too crowded, and there are always great shows that come through. Don't forget to check out the Halo Bar.
For a first-time pet owner, my experience at Millis Animal Hospital was easy and comfortable. They are also open on Saturdays for those with a tight work schedule. The receptionists were welcoming and eager to help, and I hardly had to wait at all to see the vet. My dog, who is usually very hyperactive in new environments, was calm and relaxed without being fearful.
