If you are searching for a taste of home cooking then look no further than the Route 66 diner in downtown Rockwall. Situated on highway 66 just up from Lake Ray Hubbard and across from the police station, Route 66 has some of the best tasting down-home food (chicken fried steak smothered in white gravy, mashed potatoes where you can still see bits of actual potato rather than a mix and some of the best pie around). It is a bit pricier than usual diners (think typical prices you would find in an Applebee?s or Black Eyed Pea) but it is definitely worth it. Watch out if you go for breakfast because parking is usually limited.
PROS: Food like mom used to make
CONS: parking is usually crowded
Martinz Mexican Restaurant is found in a small strip shopping center on the access road of I-30 in Garland close to Lake Ray Hubbard. The restaurant offers specials during the week including fajitas and beef enchiladas along with a kids eat free on Mondays, however what keeps us coming back is the taste of the food and the wonderful salsa. The salsa always tastes fresh and has a kick to it and the wait staff couldn?t be friendlier. This is definitely a restaurant that is worth finding. You will keep going back.
PROS: Excellent food, Great service
CONS: Be careful of the pot holes in the parking lot
This is a very small (both inside the restaurant and outside in the parking lot) family restaurant. The lunch special has you ordering off the menu with unlimited soup at the front of the restaurant. The last time we went the front of the restaurant was sloping so be careful how you walk with a bowl of soup in your hand. The drinks were plentiful and the food was very fresh and hot and the waitress was very helpful and friendly.
PROS: Good food, excellent price
CONS: Small parking area and small dining area
I would never have known about Fred's if it weren't for my husband and the gang he goes out with at lunch. They go to Fred's at least once every two weeks and one Saturday out of desire for something new he suggested we take our family there for lunch. It was quite a drive for us considering we live about 30-40 minutes away from Plano. Fred's is located in a strip shopping center in Plano. Once inside you see the walls are covered in all sorts of Philadelphia memorabilia. My husband ordered while we put tables together to fit our brood and found a high chair for the youngest member. A few guys were seated at other tables. When the food arrived I found out what the fuss was about. The cheese steak was so tender and the taste was wonderful. The fries were done to perfection and our children (who are normally picky) ate everything. All in all Fred's is definitely worth the drive for the best Philly cheese steak in the North Texas area. If only they would branch out into other suburbs. When we were leaving the business was definately starting to get busy with families coming in and others waiting for tables to clear.
PROS: Great food, tender meat, well seasoned fries
CONS: Long drive, not a lot of seating
