Go and RIDE THE DUCK! These little vehicles were once used way back during WW2 and are now 'prettied' up and used for entertainment purposes! You can find them across from the Seattle Center.
The cool thing about the tour is that you get to see Seattle on the road and IN the bay! That's right! They drive around town and then drive right into the water and somehow turn boatlike! I believe they are called 'amphibious' vehicles.
They go through most of the well known (and some not so well known) areas of the city, and into Lake Union. It's especially nice during a beautiful day! This is the perfect thing to do with visiting friends and family! Just make sure to buy tickets ahead/make reservations or you may end up waiting a long time for room!
The captains (tour guides) can be fun or REALLY fun, depending on who you get. Some are really charasmatic and get you involved during the whole trip (don't forget your duck whistle - can be purchased with tickets).
The only setback is that it is quite expensive! Adults are $23 and kids are $13, but you do get a whole hour and a half of an experience you can't have anywhere else!
PROS: unique and fun experience
South Seattle Community College is a good local community college. They offer several types and variety of classes and programs, including 1 and 2 year certificates, 2 year degrees, worker retraining, and adult enrichment. They also offer running start and high school completion/GED. In addition, they have a great distance learning/online program! They offer several different classes via distance learning (computer) and most of them help fulfill an Associates Degree. These classes are perfect for stay home parents, those who work odd hours, etc. The teaching staff is wonderful and caring, the librarians are helpful and friendly, but the office staff leaves a bit to be desired in lack of proper attitude and very discourteous. I was especially disappointed in the financial aid office staff, as they were abbrasive and quite patronizing/condescending. If you can get past the office staff and their poor attitudes, it is an overall great school.
PROS: variety of classes and programs
CONS: office staff is rude
Highline Community College is a great little community college. There are a wide array of classes and programs available, including 1 and 2 year programs and certificates, worker retraining, and adult enrichment classes. They also offer running start, high school completion and GED programs. In addition to the above, they offer some online/distance learning classes which are perfect for stay home parents, those who work odd hours, etc. The only setback is they do not offer as much as other local schools in their distance program. Their staff is wonderful and extremely helpful!
PROS: staff, variety
CONS: not enough online/distance learning classes
This pet store located on Pacific Highway at Midway is just depressing. Their store is disorganized with items crowding the isles, and shelves not properly stocked. It was also dirty. They animals do not appear well cared for. We were there on a hot summer day and the smell from the animal cages was terrible. I don't recall their prices being anything to rave about either. I would certainly not purchase animals here for fear they'd be ill. Perhaps they are ok for other items.
I have shopped at Fashion Bug on numerous occasions. While the staff is extremely friendly, curteous, and helpful, the quality has not proven to be very good to me. Nearly everything I have purchased has either fallen apart rather quickly or shrunk into odd shapes even after following the washing directions. They do have a wide variety of clothing, from basics to formal wear, and have a wide variety of sizes - from petite to plus. If you are in the market for something cheap that doesn't need to last that long, it would be ok. Perhaps for a one time event, etc. However if you are looking for somewhere to purchase a whole wardrobe, look elsewhere.
This is a wonderful little shop centrally located in downtown Burien. It is a consignment store, which specializes in infant's and children's clothing and other items. The store has so very much to choose from - mostly clothing, but also furniture, toys, bedding, and other miscellanious items. Their prices are great, and they have frequent tag sales. The service is generally pretty good, friendly and helpful. Go check them out!
I have been a customer at this store and found my experience to be satisfactory. The store was clean, well organized, and the items were of good used quality. She had a large variety (especially for smaller children) of clothing, and had a few other items such as toys and furniture for sale as well.
I have also accomodated a friend of mine to sell items there. They don't do consignment but if you have something they want, they will just purchase it from you to resell. She had several very nice, very clean items to sell, but for some reason the lady was very abbrasive to her. She only purchased two out of ten items, and while I'm sure she just knows what sells and what doesn't, she was quite rude about it. In addition to being rude, the items she did purchase she really didn't pay a fair price for. Perhaps she was having a bad day, but since that experience I have chosen to not attempt to sell there. It's better to use eBay or consignment.
PROS: Great place to buy stuff
CONS: Not so great to sell to
Vibra Clean centrally located on Ambaum in Burien, is a wonderful facility for all of your laundry services, fabric care and dry cleaning. They specialize in drycleaning, but also have a master sewer on staff. Whether cleaning, sewing repairs, or other fabric care, their work is exceptionally good quality. Their prices are fair and competitive. Their customer service is excellent as well. They even have a drive up window for faster service when needed!
The Pacific Science Center in downtown Seattle is just plain awesome! Their permanent exhibits include a cool dinosaur exhibit, my daughter's favorite the butterfly house (real butterflies fluttering around everywhere), insect village, how the body works, animal exhibits, music and technology, outdoor exhibits, and far more! You can spend the entire day here, easy! They have so much there, it is easy to miss some of it. That's a good thing because you can go again and again and see something new each time! In addition, they are constantly adding new or updated exhibits for your entertainment and education!
In addition to exhibits, they also have live science demonstrations, day camps, workshops, awesome laser light shows, a planetarium, and awesome IMAX theater which shows educational and nature movies and also shows current children's releases (such as Willy Wonka).
Prices for General Admission (not including IMAX or Laser shows) are adults $10, seniors $8.50, juniors (3-12) $7, ages 3 and under free. For an IMAX add on, add $5 per person. Laser shows are $4-$7.50. The way I recommend doing it, is inquiring about a membership, which turns out to be the cheapest way if you go more than once a year, plus you get free IMAX passes! Another option is to inquire about a City Pass, an especially good option for out of towners, where you get several different city attractions (zoo, aquarium, space needle, science center, and more) which you can use over nine days for one low price.
Whichever way you decide to pay, I highly recommend a visit to Pacific Science Center!
This zoo has a great idea - combine zoo and aquarium in one place! A wide variety of animals and exhibits that any and everyone will enjoy!
They have tigers, primates, elephants, wolves, birds, aardvark, reptiles, and more. Their aqua friends include beluga whales, walrus, sea otters, and puffins in one habitat, and a full aquarium with both north and south Pacific marine life such as sharks and octopus. There is something at this zoo for everyone.
In addition there are plenty of educational opportunities either hands on marine displays or educational discussions and shows.
The cost is very fair ranging from free (kids age 3 and under) on up to $8.75 for adults.
I highly recommend taking the kids, or some other family or friends, and spending the day enjoying these great creatures!
PROS: Great animals, fun time
