Right across from the Hangout Tea House is a restaurant that is also an event. Walk into the lobby with large aquatic fish tank and packaged food from Asia. My family likes to try to figure out what the different interesting looking dried foods are - could be banana, could be squid. Then when you are done amusing yourself, let the hostess seat you and listen to the band or watch the music videos on the monitors while you order dinner. The menu is a mixture of food from Japan, China, and Thailand with an extensive drink menu. My favorite dish is the yellow curry duck with steamed rice. I dream about this dish. MMMMMMMM.
For an evening out that isn't too dressy check out the Liquid Lounge. Its small and cute with a big round bar in the center and stools all around it. The dance floor is intimate and the music is good to boogey too. Its a good place to meet people who look like they shower often.
PROS: VIP Lounge with Pool Tables
This is where I'm going to get married one day. See trees from all around the world bursting with fruit and colors too vivid to take in. See waterfalls and orchid gardens, a bamboo forest and feel at one with the Earth. I recommend going at the peak of every season. Fall is my favorite.
Every time my dog gets stinky I take him to South Bark. The staff is friendly and understands you and your pet. When you walk in, you are added to the waiting list (which is never too long) and you are given brushes and taken to a nice patio area where you can brush your pet and feed him/her treats. When your tub is ready, you are given an apron and your dog is coerced into the tall tub with treats and affection. Then comes the blueberry facial! My dog instantly mellows out and allows me to start washing. I use lavender shampoo and silk conditioner. After washing, you can use a kennel drier or a vacuum drier. All this for about $8.
Have you visited Old Poway Park lately? Come by on a Saturday morning and walk around the farmer's market enjoying a breakfast of fresh fruit. Walk over to the Old Poway Museum and take a gander at the history of this ever expanding town. Enjoy crafts on the Hamburger Factory boardwalk. Walk around the park itself (behind the Hamburger Factor). Take in the scenery and see if you can spot a Crawdad in the water. By this time, you're ready for lunch. Have a juicy hamburger the size of your head with some of the best fries in the country!
As a massage enthusiast, I have tried three different therapists in the past year. The last one was a keeper. Paolo Pellecer LMT invites you into his cozy studio and lays you down on his memory foam massage table. His techniques will leave you incoherent and possibly drooling. He is also trained in many different forms of massage so that he can adapt to what his patients need most. Highly recommended.
Open until 2 daily, Perry's Cafe is always crowded so I suggest sitting at the bar. The food is world class and so is the staff. In the 12 years that I have lived in San Diego, most of these men and women have been serving at Perry's. Check out the nearly 7 foot tall chef! Everything on the menu is perfect. My two personal favorite dishes are the Machaca Con Huevos Plate and the Cheese Enchilada Plate. So good! I want to go there now!
This year, I got to see the faire for six days from the perspective of a vendor. As I pounded the ground, I realized that you don't have to eat like a pig to enjoy one. Next to the woodworking exhibit, there is the Del Mar Deli booth featuring sandwiches at fair prices (about $5 for a 12"). The kind staff goes down a list with you so that they don't ad anything that you don't like. Yummy!
After filling your belly, see the demolition derby and monster car showcases performed daily which is much more impressive in person (but wear earplugs).
And if you are feeling a little grubby and need a pick me up, walk around the many demonstration booths and allow the exhibitionists to massage you, do your hair, your makeup, feed you, and then compliment you. You will walk out feeling like a million bucks without paying a cent!
CONS: Caution: stay away from the fried snickersbar! Sick!
