If youve got late night hunger pains, Sun Hong Kong is the resaurant many people gravitate towards. Open from 10am to 1am, seven days a week, Sun Hong Kong feeds a variety of people after most other restaurants have shut down for the night. Many rice, chicken, pork or beef dishes are in are in the $6-8 range. Various shellfish and fish dishes are available for slightly more, depending on season. All entrees are available To-Go and for delivery to local addresses.
The fried dishes are cooked with copious amounts of oil, seemingly from the same pan. While eating your own dish, the perceptive will be able to detect flavors of the previously cooked. A variety of foods and flavors are offered at Sun Hong Kong, but the excessive amounts of cooking oil used make a far cry from authentic.
There is one primary cook in the kitchen. When the restaurant is busy, wait times for food are long. Ive waited forty-five minutes from the time Ive ordered until the food has arrived.
PROS: variety of hot Chinese Food at a low cost, open late with delivery
CONS: hot oily Chinese food, long waits for food when busy
This location is located just outside the Oakland airport with shuttles to the terminal. Definitely convenient to air travellers, I usually use this location because they offer more car options and have longer business hours than the local Avis franchise.
PROS: extra long open hours
At this location, I got the usual friendly Enterprise service and clean & new rental vehicles, but I found the weekend hours extremely limited.
This location is close by and convenient, but because of the limited hours, I usually use a different rental agency.
PROS: friendly service, clean cars, local pickup/dropoff service
CONS: limited weekend hours
I've always found the service here very personalized and friendly. After only a few visits, I was recognized on entry and greeted by name. Though the prices aren't any lower than other cleaners, the friendly service and the close proximity to my apartment made this my cleaners of choice.
PROS: extremely friendly and personable staff
CONS: not as cheap as other cleaners
The basic E Housing service is to deliver apartment and rental listings to you daily by e-mail. This is entirely an on-line service.
Enrollment and other interactions are via the Internet. My friends enrolled for and used the service without any problem, but I had a problem with credit card billing. I was able to call them and get a response and account activation later that day.
A core customer base are students at UC Berkeley, so although the coverage area is the entire East Bay (from Pittsburg to Richmond to Hayward) most listings are in the Berkeley Oakland area. I found suitable apartment near campus in less than a week, but those seeking to live in other areas might not be able to find one so quickly.
PROS: Easy & convenient. Lots of Berkeley & Oakland listings
Edge is a six-chair salon that serves both women and men.
Haircuts, shampoos, permanents and other services are available at Edge, from the basic to the extravagent. If stuck for ideas for a new hairstyle, their are many magazines and books available to browse for inspiration, or the staff can make suggestions for looks that complement your face and body lines.
The prices charged are comparable to other neighborhood hair salons, but where you get your value is from the great service that you receive.
PROS: Fantastic service!
A subterranean shop located downstairs from Ned's Books, Comb & Scissors is a small shop with only two chairs and one employee.
No frills, no excesses, this little shop provides just basic service. Though the wait might be a bit longer if there are a couple of customers ahead of you, but once you get into the chair, the cut is fast and quick.
Prices here are also slightly cheaper than competitors' prices, so you can save a couple of bucks here as well!
This is a hardware store for apartment dwellers within walking distance.
The aisles are narrow and high, but they seem to pack a lot of stuff into a pretty small storefront. This store had always been able to fill my basic tool needs, though the variety of similar tools is often sparse (how many different hammers do you really need?). I've found the staff to be courteous and knowledgeable (but when the store is busy, it's sometimes difficult to find an available staff member).
PROS: they've got most items needed
CONS: cramp store
A busy location, while this store meets most of my grocery needs, it also has a few detractions.
The aisles are narrower than most. and there's less space beyond the end caps, making shopping cart movement more of a tight fit.
The front section of the parking lot narrows, meaning fewer spaces within easy reach of the front doors of the store. The spaces in the side lot fill up quickly during the evening shopping rush.
The redeeming value of this store is the fact that it is open 24-hours, for those late night shopping runs.
PROS: Bus & BART close, 24-hours
CONS: crowded, narrow aisles,
Blondie's is a Berkeley landmark, drawing customers from UC Berkeley students, tourists and townspeople alike. In addition to their main staples of hot inexpensive Pepperoni, Cheese and Vegetarian slices, Blondie's also has a rotation of daily pizza specials (such as Carnivore, Chicken Alfredo, BBQ Chicken).
You can dine in the restaurant or carry out. The small dining room has large open windows and table & counter seating that allow you view the happenings of Telegraph Ave as you eat.
Blondie's is a great place to stop to enjoy a hot and tasty pizza slice.
PROS: Great pizza, open late, pizza variety, good price
